Book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways

Download or read book Uses of Recycled Rubber Tires in Highways written by Jon A. Epps and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1994 with total page 172 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis on the use of recycled rubber tires in highways will be of interest to administrators and policy-makers; pavement, materials, geotechnical, environmental, and traffic operations engineers; and research engineers involved with highway design and construction issues. Information is provided on the uses of rubber tires in asphalt paving materials as well as other uses, such as on fills and embankments, for erosion control and on railroad grade crossings. Specifically, information is included which identifies the agencies using or implementing applications for recycled rubber tires and defines the design parameters, technical and construction limitations, performance, costs, benefits, environmental limitations, specifications, and availability. This synthesis of information defines the use of recycled rubber tires in highways and is based on a review of nearly 500 references and on information recorded from state highway agency responses to a 1991 survey of practice. Updates are included for as much of the state practice information possible through 1993. The use of scrap tires for highway applications is dynamic with regard to policy and technical issues. Therefore, the reader should keep in mind that the information presented reflects the best available data at a particular time. The synthesis also identifies current research in the topic area, critical research needs, and legislative issues that affect application and use of recycled rubber tires.

Book Development of Asphalts and Pavements Using Recycled Tire Rubber Phase 1 Technical Feasibility Technical Progress Report September 1 1994 August 31 1995

Download or read book Development of Asphalts and Pavements Using Recycled Tire Rubber Phase 1 Technical Feasibility Technical Progress Report September 1 1994 August 31 1995 written by and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About 285 million tires are discarded every year; less than 100 million are currently being recycled, with the rest being placed in landfills and other waste sites. A solution to reduce the littering of the environment is to use ground tire rubber in road construction. Currently, about 27 million tons of asphalt are used each year in road construction and maintenance of the country's 2 million miles of roads. If all of the waste tire rubber could be combined with asphalt in road construction, it would displace less than 6% of the total asphalt used each year, yet could save about 60 trillion Btus annually. Purpose of this project is to provide data needed to optimize the performance of rubber-asphalt concretes. The first phase is to develop asphalts and recycling agents tailored for compatibility with ground tire rubber. Chapter 2 presents results on Laboratory Testing and Evaluation: fractionate asphalt material, reblending for aromatic asphalts, verifying optimal curing parameters, aging of blends, and measuring ductilities of asphalt-rubber binders. Chapter 3 focuses on Evaluating Mixture Characteristics (modified binders). Chapter 4 covers Adhesion Test Development (water susceptibility is also covered). The final chapter focuses on the Performance/Economic Update and Commercialization Plan.

Book Recycled Materials in Geotechnical and Pavement Applications

Download or read book Recycled Materials in Geotechnical and Pavement Applications written by Amin Chegenizadeh and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-02-28 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book considers the application of recycled materials both in pavement and geotechnical engineering. Currently, Australia has faced the fundamental concern of recycling waste plastic. On 1 January 2018, China enforced a prohibition on the importation of waste plastic. China's ban is followed by other countries like India, Indonesia, and Malaysia. The ban caused many corporations to abandon waste collection agreements, and the stockpiling of waste, as there is nowhere to safely deposit this waste. This issue seems, to a great extent, to have placed Australia's recycling industry in a crisis. As a result, local councils will have to find strategic ways of recycling accumulated waste that will become a more significant issue in the coming years. In Australia, apart from economic growth, the road pavement has weakened rapidly as the current pavement unable to withstand this urgent traffic load demand. The adding of polymers to the mixtures improves the stiffness, rutting resistance, and fatigue cracking [1]. However, the application of virgin polymer is costly. Thus, using waste polymer such as waste plastic polymer is an inexpensive substitute. The potential for recycled plastic to improve the performance properties of asphalt mixtures has been demonstrated in many countries the UK, Canada, The Netherlands, and India [2]. Similarly, another application of recycled materials can be in geotechnical infrastructure. This book considers the application of recycled materials both in pavement and geotechnical engineering. Book Evaluation of Cold Weather Performance of Rubber Modified Asphalt Placed in Ontario

Download or read book Evaluation of Cold Weather Performance of Rubber Modified Asphalt Placed in Ontario written by Mohamed Hegazi and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 141 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Canada has close to 900,000 km of roads, which are key to supporting the Canadian economy as they enable for efficient transportation of goods and services. The Canadian road network should be well maintained and perform to a high standard to ensure the function and growth of the economy and the Country. It is also important to consider sustainability, and more specifically, recycling, when designing the roads. In order to improve on the performance while being sustainable, research is being conducted on the feasibility of using recycled materials in asphalt pavements. One of these materials is crumb rubber, obtained from recycled rubber tires, used as an additive to conventional Hot Mix Asphalt (HMA) to produce Rubber Modified Asphalt (RMA). These tires would otherwise end up in landfills, which is undesirable when considering sustainability. The Ontario Tire Stewardship (OTS), along with the Centre for Pavement and Transportation Technology (CPATT), the Ontario Ministry of Transportation (MTO), and the Ontario Hot Mix Producers Association (OHMPA) have combined their efforts in order to carry out a pilot study on paving roads in Ontario with crumb tire rubber.

Download or read book Rubber Recycling written by Jin Kuk Kim and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2018-10-03 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubber is used in a vast number of products, from tyres on vehicles to disposable surgical gloves. Increasingly both manufacturers and legislators are realising that recycling is essential for environmental sustainability and can improve the cost of manufacture. The volume of rubber waste produced globally makes it difficult to manage as accumulated waste rubber, especially in the form of tyres, can pose a significant fire risk. Recycling rubber not only prevents this problem but can produce new materials with desirable properties that virgin rubbers lack. This book presents an up-to-date overview of the fundamental and applied aspects of renewability and recyclability of rubber materials, emphasising existing recycling technologies with significant potential for future applications along with a detailed outline of new technology based processing of rubber to reuse and recycle. This book will be of interest to researchers in both academia and industry as well as postgraduate students working in polymer chemistry, materials processing, materials science and engineering.

Book A Comprehensive Study Towards Increasing the Use of Recycled Materials in Asphalt Pavements

Download or read book A Comprehensive Study Towards Increasing the Use of Recycled Materials in Asphalt Pavements written by Arkan Khudhayer Obaid and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This dissertation consists of two parts that are aimed at increasing the use of recycled materials in pavement structures. This first part summarizes the results of a research study that involved the construction of four test sections as part of a pavement resurfacing project to examine the performance of different ground tire rubber (GTR) modified mixes and compare them to that of a conventional polymer modified mix. In the first section (control section), a styrene-butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymer modified asphalt binder meeting performance grade (PG) 70-22M was used in the surface course mixture. Furthermore, the surface course mixtures used in the other three sections a PG 64-22 asphalt binder modified with 7% cryogenic GTR (CR GTR), a PG 64-22 binder modified with 6% cryogenic GTR and 0.5% anti-settling agent (CR GTR+ ASA), and a PG 64-22 binder modified with 7% ambient GTR (AM GTR). All asphalt mixtures included 20% reclaimed asphalt pavement (RAP). Samples of the GTR modified asphalt binders were obtained at the asphalt terminal and asphalt plant and were tested to evaluate the tendency of the different types GTR particles to separate from the modified binder. In addition, samples of the GTR and polymer modified mixes were obtained during construction and were compacted in the laboratory.
