Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These fables, inspired by traditional folk lullabies, are part of a larger project that includes 12 sung songs that you can listen for free on spotify or at: www.favoledoro.comFrom this, was born a book with works accompanied by the original texts of the lullabies. From this idea also comes this collection of fables: often we had to tell some fairy tales to our daughter to make her fall asleep. Searching on internet we found some were too long (we added the necessary reading time at the beginning of each story for this purpose, based on a suggestion from a friend) and others simply not suitable. So often we had to invent them. Some are simple, some absolutely bizarre and absurd with sudden and ironic endings. But we also saw that often these were the favorites of our baby girl, so we decided to write some.In these stories there is a lot of our personal experience and many parts are inspired by what surrounds us, but also by distant legends that it is nice to imagine simply for what they are.In the last ten years we fell in love with the territory of the Larian triangle near the Como Lake and decided to move in order to grow our daughter in a more natural environment surrounded by mountains, lakes and rivers. Some stories are set in small villages of this environment also to make our contribution to enhance and promote this wonderful territory and some in other parts of Italy. We thought that a handy little book, to be kept on the bedside table, with some fables to read in bed before falling asleep, would have been convenient to many as it would have been convenient for us at that time!We therefore combined this with the creations of our talented friends who created unique artwork. Moreover, this was also an excellent opportunity to promote their works and give them the deserved visibility. We have divided into two distinct sections the stories inspired by the popular lullabies and the others invented by us and by some friends who had 'something' to tell and who, fascinated by the project, gave their contribution with their fables andIn this edition we have also tried to put a small background moral and some useful lessons in our tales, and we decided to deal with topics that can sometimes be considered difficult to deal with children... and even with adult! Some dear friends then, fascinated by the project, gave their contribution with their fables and their ideas. In particular, this publication was produced in collaboration with the non-profit association WHYNOT (www.whynotonlus.it), which was born from a crazy idea like ours and then turned into a concrete help for the disadvantaged peoples of the world. We are sincerely proud to be part of this and, in this regard, we have made our publications a way of supporting this fantastic initiative in a small way.Enjoy the reading!Roberto and Sabrina

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 1 of 3. This monumental three-volume work on the Italian madrigal from its beginnings about 1500 to its decline in the 17th century is based on the research of 40 years, and is a cultural history of the development of Italian music. Mr. Einstein, renowned musicologist, supplies a background and a sense of proportion to the field: he gives the right order to the single composers in the evolution fo the madrigal, attaches new values to old names, and places in the foreground the outstanding, but until now rather neglected, personality of Cipriano de Rore. His work is not, however, purely musicological; his object is to inquire into the functions of secular music in Italian life during the Cinquecento, and to contribute to our knowledge and understanding of that great century in general. Translated from the German by Oliver Strunk, Roger Sessions and Alexander H. Krappe. Originally published in 1948. The Princeton Legacy Library uses the latest print-on-demand technology to again make available previously out-of-print books from the distinguished backlist of Princeton University Press. Book Demetrius of Phalerum

    Book Details:
  • Author : William W. Fortenbaugh
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2018-02-06
  • ISBN : 1351326902
  • Pages : 480 pages

Download or read book Demetrius of Phalerum written by William W. Fortenbaugh and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demetrius of Phalerum (c. 355-280BCE) of Phalerum was a philosopher-statesman. He studied in the Peripatos under Theophrastus and subsequently used his political influence to help his teacher acquire property for the Peripatetic school. As overseer of Athens, his governance was characterized by a decade of domestic peace. Exiled to Alexandria in Egypt, he became the adviser of Ptolemy. He is said to have been in charge of legislation, and it is likely that he influenced the founding of the Museum and the Library. This edition of the fragments of Demetrius of Phalerum reflects the growing interest in the Hellenistic period and the philosophical schools of that age. As a philosopher-statesman, Demetrius appears to have combined theory and practice. For example, in the work On Behalf of the Politeia, he almost certainly explained his own legislation and governance by appealing to the Aristotelian notion of politeia, that is, a constitution in which democratic and oligarchic elements are combined. In On Peace, he may have defended his subservience to Macedon by appealing to Aristotle, who repeatedly recognized the importance of peace over war; and in On Fortune, he will have followed Theophrastus, emphasizing the way fortune can determine the success or failure of sound policy. Whatever the case concerning any one title, we can well understand why Cicero regarded Demetrius as a unique individual: the educated statesman who was able to bring learning out of the shadows of erudition into the light of political conflict, and that despite an oratorical style more suited to the shadows of the Peripatos then to political combat. The new edition of secondary reports by Stork, van Ophuijsen, and Dorandi brings together the evidence for these and other judgments. The facing translation which accompanies the Greek and Latin texts opens up the material to readers who lack the ancient languages, and the accompanying essays introduce us to important issues. The volume will be of interest to those interested in Greek literature, Hellenistic philosophy, Hellenistic history, and generally to persons captivated by the notion of philosopher-statesman.
