First, to make Fauquier's hitherto unpublished colonial tithable lists available to the research public; secondly, to provide an explanation for the tax and fiscal laws that brought the tithable lists into being. The tax lists cover the colonial Virginia time period into the Revolutionary War. Designed to meet the needs of researchers--family historians, professional genealogists, historians, African-American family researchers as well as those interested in colonial Virginia history. The book is organized into three parts--includes a historical introduction and transcripts of Fauquier's nineteen never before published colonial tax lists of 1759-1782. Four different indexes are included: 1759-1778 list, 1759-1778 tithables, slave holders and slaves, 1782 tithables, 1782 slave holders and slaves. Officials mentioned in this work include Thomas Marshall, George Lamkin, John Marshall, Gilson Foote, John Kirk, Armistead Churchill, John Kirk, William Grant, John Moffet, Thomas Keith, William Pickett, William Blackwell, Charles Chilton, John Blackwell, and William Heale. These tax lists were discovered in a 1994 preservation and repair project funded by the Library of Virginia. The Tax and Fiscal records were done by the Justices who took the lists of Tithables from Fauquier's residents and by the Sheriff and other officials who took the tax and were responsible for their transmission to the colonial capital. The colonial tax lists, those taken before 1782 were loosely termed Tithable Lists--included both property and land. During and after 1782, these lists were divided into two distinct tax lists which included personal property tax lists and land tax lists.

Reeling after the recent defeat at Chancellorsville, the Federals, especially the Cavalry Corps, scrambled to regroup. Confederate general Robert E. Lee seized the moment to launch a second invasion of the North. Since the fighting in Loudoun Valley of Virginia ended in June 1863, one perspective has prevailed—that Brigadier General Alfred Pleasonton, who commanded the Cavalry Corps, Army of the Potomac, disobeyed orders. According to published records, Pleasonton’s superiors, including President Abraham Lincoln, Secretary of War Edwin Stanton, and army commander Joseph Hooker, ordered Pleasonton to search for General Robert E. Lee’s Army of Northern Virginia during a critical stage of the Gettysburg campaign, and Pleasonton ignored their orders. Recently discovered documents—discussed in this book—prove otherwise.

As were many ideas, notions of the ideal woman were in flux after the Civil War. While poverty added a harder edge to the search for a good marriage among some "southern belles," other privileged white women forged identities that challenged the belle model altogether. Their private and public writings from the 1870s and 1880s suggest a widespread ethic of autonomy. Sometimes that meant increased domestic skills born of the new reality of fewer servants. But women also owned and transmitted property, worked for pay, and even pursued long-term careers. Many found a voice in a plethora of new voluntary organizations, and some southern women attained national celebrity in the literary world, creating strong and capable heroines and mirroring an evolving view toward northern society. Yet even as elite southern women experimented with their roles, external forces and contradictions within their position were making their unprecedented attitudes and achievements socially untenable. During the 1890s, however, virulent racism and pressures to re-create a mythic South left these women caught between the revived image of the southern belle and the emerging emancipated woman. Just as the memoirs of southern white women have been key to understanding life during the Civil War, the writings of such women unlock the years of dramatic change that followed.
