Book The Biogeography of the Oceans

Download or read book The Biogeography of the Oceans written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1997-10-20 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a special volume on ocean biogeography containing chapters bringing the wealth of knowledge of Russian scientists to a global audience. Ocean biogeography was the subject of much marine research carried out by the former USSR, where extensive facilities were provided on a world-wide scale. Volume 32 is devoted to the geographical and vertical distribution of life in the open oceans, including the great depths. The contributions range widely from plankton and squid to the bottom fauna of the bathyal, abyssal, and hadal zones. This volume will help bridge the gap between Russian and western marine biogeographers and will be of interest to a wide range of marine biologists. Advance in Marine Biology contains up-to-date reviews of all areas of marine science, including fisheries, science and macro/micro fauna. Each volume contains peer reviewed papers detailing the ecology of marine regions.

Book The Biology of Calanoid Copepods

Download or read book The Biology of Calanoid Copepods written by and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 1998-06-02 with total page 721 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This special volume of Advances in Marine Biology covers in detail the biology of calanoid copepods. Copepods are probably the most numerous multicellular organisms on earth. They are aquatic animals that live in both marine and fresh water, and are of prime importance in marine ecosystems as they form a direct link between phytoplankton and fish. This volume is essential for all marine biologists.Advances in Marine Biology contains up-to-date reviews of all areas of marine science, including fisheries science and macro/micro fauna. Each volume contains peer-reviewed papers detailing the ecology of marine regions.

Book Species Diversity of Animals in Japan

Download or read book Species Diversity of Animals in Japan written by Masaharu Motokawa and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-11-26 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the status quo of the knowledge about the biodiversity in terrestrial, freshwater, and marine animals that live in Japan. Consisting of some 6,800 islands that are arrayed for approximately 3,500 km from north to south, the Japanese archipelago has a complex history in a paleogeographic formation process over time and harbors rich flora and fauna. This work will contribute to establishing a general biogeographic theory in archipelagoes around continental shelves. Facing the ongoing extinction crisis, one of the most important tasks for our generation is to bequeath this precious natural heritage to future generations. As the first step toward this goal, a species list has been compiled through solid, steady alpha-taxonomic work in each taxon. Furthermore, the phylogeography and population genetic structure for each species is elucidated for deeper understanding of the local fauna, the scientific results of which should be the basis for establishing conservation policies and strategies. Also the problem of alien or introduced species is investigated as another threat to the native fauna. Each of the 27 chapters is written by the most active specialist leading the field, thus readers can acquire up-to-date knowledge of the animal species diversity and their formation process of Japanese animals in the most comprehensive form available. This book is recommended for researchers and students who are interested in species diversity, biogeography, and phylogeography.

Book Antarctic Valviferans Crustacea Isopoda Valvifera

Download or read book Antarctic Valviferans Crustacea Isopoda Valvifera written by Brandt and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-14 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the "Polarstern" expeditions of 1983-1987 to Antarctica, a large number of benthic isopods were collected. Many of these species are already known, though not always well described, but the samples also contain many new species, especially of the family Arcturidae. The descriptions found in the literature are often poor or incomplete. It is difficult to determine many of the previously described species or to identify new species. For this reason, many species are redescribed besides the description of new species. Antarcturus Zur Strassen, 1902 does not form a monophyletic unit. Though a complete revision of the genera of the Arcturidae cannot be presented, it is possible to define some new, probably, monophyletic genera. Besides the contribution of descriptions of new species, redescriptions and the establishments of new genera this book will be a good stimulus for taxonomists and phylogeneticists to work out more monophyletic groups within the polyphyletic genus Antarcturus.

  • Pages : 473 pages

Download or read book Global Biogeography written by J.C. Briggs and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1995-10-13 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book significantly expands the coverage of this subject given by its predecessor Biogeography and Plate Tectonics (1987). Global Biogeography traces global changes in geography and biology from the Precambrian to the Recent (with worldwide coverage in chronological order); examines the evolutionary effects of the major extinctions, and discusses contemporary biogeographic regions within the context of their historic origins. It is now apparent that the biotas of the various biogeographical regions have had, and still maintain, a dynamic relationship with one another; much more than was previously thought. This is shown to be true for all three of the earth's primary habitats; marine, terrestrial and freshwater (as is clearly demonstrated in this volume). The book is splendidly illustrated with 122 text figures, an extensive bibliography, index, together with a set of biogeographic maps illustrating continental and terrain outlines from the mid-Cambrian to the Recent. University students (both advanced undergraduate and graduate level) will find it an excellent text book. For professionals in Biogeography this is a convenient reference work.

Book Pleistoannelida Sedentaria II

Download or read book Pleistoannelida Sedentaria II written by Günter Purschke and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2020-02-24 with total page 476 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is the second volume in a series of 4 volumes in the Handbook of Zoology series treating morphology, anatomy, reproduction, development, ecology, phylogeny, systematics and taxonomy of polychaetous Annelida. In this volume a comprehensive review of a few more derived higher taxa within Sedentaria are given, namely Sabellida, Opheliida/Capitellida as well as Hrabeiellidae. The former comprise annelids possessing a body divided into two more or less distinct regions or tagmata called thorax and abdomen. Here two groups of families are united, the spioniform and sabelliform polychaetes. Especially Spionidae and Sabellidae are speciose families within this group and represent two of the largest annelid families. These animals live in various types of burrows or tubes and all possess so-called feeding palps. In one group these appendages are differentiated as grooved feeding palps, whereas in the other they may form highly elaborated circular tentacular crowns comprising a number of radioles mostly giving off numerous filamentous pinnulae. Often additionally colourful, the latter are also received the common names "feather-duster worms", "flowers of the sea", "Christmas-tree worms". Opheliida/Capitellida including five families of truly worm-like annelids without appendages represents the contrary. Their members burrow in soft bottom substrates and may be classified as non-selective deposit feeders. Molecular phylogenetic analyses have shown that Echiura or spoon worms, formerly regarded to represent a separate phylum, are members of this group. Last not least Hrabeiellidae is one out of only two families of oligochaete-like terrestrial polychaetes and for this reason received strong scientific interest.
