Book Faulty Premises Faulty Policies

Download or read book Faulty Premises Faulty Policies written by Gary Galles and published by Liberty.Me. This book was released on 2014-04 with total page 382 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Faulty Premises, Faulty Policies by Gary Galles is an incredibly good guide to showing precisely what is nonsensical about political debate. How many times have you watched a public policy fiasco and been mystified as to how the politicians can believe their own rhetoric? They talk about how raising the minimum wage is going to make the poor better off, even though there is no mechanism in the nature of things to bring about that reality; about how some new war is going to rid the world of despotism, despite knowing that the history of war tends in the opposite direction; about how some new healthcare mandate is going to bring freedom from disease, and yet you know that legislation can't actually achieve anything like this. There always seems to be a missing step in the chain of logic. Politicians and pundits actually seem to believe that passing a law will generate a certain wonderful result, even though the relationship between cause and effect is nowhere present. It seems like a giant exercise in fantasy. Galles has provided an outstanding tool for navigating your way through the sea of folly that is the politics of our time. There is no anger in his prose, and there doesn't need to be. He has the arguments, the analytics, and the facts - those alone make the case.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thomas Ausa, an obscure but adequately credentialed professor of American International Relations, at the end of his career imagined he might best illustrate what he called the “themes” or “frames” or “buzzwords” of American foreign policy by telling a few stories about typical Americans living through these pandemic times in ways he hoped would illustrate terms like “deterrence,” “containment,” “asymmetrical warfare,” and “mutual assured destruction.” The novel fragment he left attempts to do that. Whether he succeeded only future readers, if any, will tell. The afterword by Liv Wells, former U.S. Deputy Chief of Mission at several American embassies, doesn’t help much.

Book Prisoners of Their Premises

Download or read book Prisoners of Their Premises written by George C. Edwards III and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2022-11-11 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Why do leaders sometimes get it so wrong when making major policy decisions despite all the resources in terms of expertise and experience they can call on? We debate debacles such as the American involvement in Vietnam, seeking to understand why leaders pursued disastrous policies. In Prisoners of their Premises George Edwards argues that the failure of leaders to examine their premises, the assumptions they make about the world and situation they are dealing with, cause them to ignore real problems or pursue policies that, in costly ways, deal with problems that are different than they think or simply don't exist. Edwards looks at the role of premises in identifying (or ignoring) a problem in a series of case studies that range from strategic decisions in World War I to our own Iraq War. Too often unexamined premises color initial decisions to pursue a policy and shape the strategies a leader employs to achieve their goals with grave consequences for their countries, organizations, and potentially the world. Edwards demonstrates the real costs leaders incur by failing to question their premises"--

Book Politics Policy and Private Law

Download or read book Politics Policy and Private Law written by Jodi Gardner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2023-12-14 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a landmark and ambitious research project looking at private law through the policy prism undertaken by a team of acknowledged experts in their fields. The majority of existing literature diminishes the impact of policy in the development of legal principles, impeding a deeper understanding of it. Part of a two-part study, this first volume explores tort law, property law and equity. Both studies engage with modern challenges and technical developments that now inform private law, with chapters looking at the Grenfell disaster, compensation of medical injuries post COVID-19, the gig economy and co-ownership. They also explore traditional private law areas through a novel lens, such as psychological injury and the impact of fairness and/or equality obligations. They highlight the similarities and differences across many aspects of private law, allowing for a richer analysis across all the strands of private law.

Book Torture As Public Policy

Download or read book Torture As Public Policy written by James P. Pfiffner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-11-17 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After September 11, 2001 the Bush Administration decided that the most important intelligence about terrorism would come from the interrogation of captives suspected of terrorism. As a result, many detainees were subject to harsh interrogation techniques that at times amounted to torture. Here, James P. Pfiffner authoritatively examines the policy directives, operational decisions, and leadership actions of the Bush Administration that reversed centuries of US policy on the treatment of enemy prisoners. He shows how the serious reservations of career military lawyers about these policies were overcome by the political appointees of the Bush Administration. Pfiffner then analyses the philosophical and legal underpinnings of the policies and practices that have led to the denunciation of the United States' policies by its allies and adversaries throughout the world. Looking ahead, Pfiffner anticipates Obama administration policy changes to restore U.S. credibility and accountability. In all, Torture as Public Policy is a model of detailed policy analysis that demonstrates how greatly public policy matters beyond the back corridors of bureaucracy.
