Book excerpt: Fauji Heart is a captivating set of short stories, where each one has a unique flavor and yet together they build up a whole and nuanced picture of the Indian soldier. One where he is not a unidimensional stereotype of a brave-heart sworn to protect the nation, but a real, breathing, complex human being living an undoubtedly odd but fulfilling life. This collection offers a rare insight into army life that is sometimes mundane…sometimes fantastic, sometimes humourous…sometimes tragic, sometimes lonely…but always filled with adventure. ‘Civilian’ readers will enjoy this experience of engaging with the fauji world in such a real manner...beyond the tragic headlines or the usual patriotic rhetoric. Though most of the stories are set in the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s they will undoubtedly resonate with old faujis and the new generation alike.

Book Dateline Islamabad

Download or read book Dateline Islamabad written by Amit Baruah and published by Penguin UK. This book was released on 2007-06-06 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It was an assignment that was at once challenging and intimidating. I was going to be setting foot on --enemy'' territory.' Amit Baruah was one of only two Indian journalists allowed to be based in Islamabad during three tumultuous years of Pakistan's history. The author recounts with some amusement his family's experience of life in Islamabad society between April 1997 and June 2000"all of it conducted under the suspicious gaze of Pakistani intelligence agents who shadow Baruah, his wife and daughters everywhere, including into friends' living rooms. He records his frustration at being disallowed from reporting freely on the ground many events that defined Indo-Pak relations, even as death or kidnapping forever stalks him. Three incidents haunt Baruah the most: not being cleared to attend the funeral, in 1998, of John Joseph, the bishop of Faisalabad who committed suicide in protest against Pakistan's -blasphemy' laws; being forbidden to view the wreckage of an Indian Air Force plane shot down during the Kargil conflict of 1999; and being prevented from entering Afghanistan from Pakistan to report on the Kandahar hijacking later that year. And yet, says Baruah, despite all the personal and professional difficulties he faced in Pakistan, his stint in Islamabad"and his exchanges with so many friends he cannot name"proved to be the most exciting and enriching in his career. While admitting the difficult nature of his job as a foreign correspondent in a hostile nation, Baruah recalls the joys of meeting generous, like-minded people in a country whose regimented stance on India"and its press"is less than friendly.

Book Islam and Social Policy

Download or read book Islam and Social Policy written by Stephen P. Heyneman and published by Vanderbilt University Press. This book was released on 2004 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At a time when more nuanced understandings of Muslim countries and their legal and social practices are urgently needed in the West, the appearance of this collection is especially welcome. In these illuminating and accessible essays, the contributors explain how Islam sees itself in terms of social policy, how it treats women, and how it encourages charity, education, and general social welfare. The essays encompass many regional cultures and draw on court records and legal debates, field work on government ministries, and an extensive reading of Islamic law. In his overview of waqf (similar to the Western idea of a foundation, in which an endowment is set aside in perpetuity for specified purposes), Ahmad Dallal explains how charity, a central organizing principle in Islam, is itself organized and how waqf, traditionally a source of revenue for charitable purposes, can also become a source of tension and conflict. Donna Lee Bowen, in her essay on the position of women in Islamic law, points out the crucial differences between the Islamic principles of family equity and the Western notion of individual equality. In a subsequent essay, Bowen addresses the problems surrounding family planning and the dilemmas that have arisen within the Muslim world over differing ideas about birth control. The two final essays look at specific instances of how the modern state has treated Islamic social policy. Gail Richardson examines zakat, an Islamic tax used to assist the poor, and its administration in Pakistan. Carol Underwood, meanwhile, explores public health policy in Iran, both before and after the Islamic revolution that deposed the Shah. Addressing some of the most profound misunderstandings between Islamic and Western societies, Islam and Social Policy will be of vital interest not only to scholars and policymakers but to anyone concerned with Islam's critical place in the modern world.
