Book Fatti e Leggende di Roma Antica Classic Reprint

Download or read book Fatti e Leggende di Roma Antica Classic Reprint written by Carlo Pascal and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-27 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Download or read book Roma nella Memoria e Nelle Immaginazioni del Medio Evo written by Arturo Graf and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 826 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book Roba Di Roma Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

Download or read book Roba Di Roma Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint written by William Wetmore Story and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Roba Di Roma, Vol. 1 of 2 IN the present edition, the chapters on The Evil Eye and Saints and Superstitions have been omitted, and several others, such as those on the Colosseum, the Aqueducts, and the Good Old Times, have been materially altered. I have expressly avoided the discussion of questions relating to politics and religion, not because I have not very strong opinions on them, but because my book has another scope, and I could do jus tice neither to myself nor to these subjects in treating them thus incidentally. My chief object has been to describe what is charac teristic in the common life of Rome; but I have not felt thereby debarred from all subjects of a serious character, even though they should involve some slight historical sketches. The Ghetto, the Colosseum, and the Fountains, Aqueducts, and Baths, owe one of their great charms to associations with the past, and it would be difficult to give an account of them Without touching upon matters of history and archaeology. To scholars, the information contained in these chapters is superfluous; but to the main portion of travel lers it will not, I hope, he uninteresting; and it is for this reason that they have been retained, though all except that relating to the Ghetto have been much compressed and modified in form. Book Dante and Islam

  • Author : Jan M. Ziolkowski
  • Publisher : Fordham Univ Press
  • Release : 2014-12-01

Download or read book Dante and Islam written by Jan M. Ziolkowski and published by Fordham Univ Press. This book was released on 2014-12-01 with total page 384 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dante put Muhammad in one of the lowest circles of Hell. At the same time, the medieval Christian poet placed several Islamic philosophers much more honorably in Limbo. Furthermore, it has long been suggested that for much of the basic framework of the Divine Comedy Dante was indebted to apocryphal traditions about a “night journey” taken by Muhammad. Dante scholars have increasingly returned to the question of Islam to explore the often surprising encounters among religious traditions that the Middle Ages afforded. This collection of essays works through what was known of the Qur’an and of Islamic philosophy and science in Dante’s day and explores the bases for Dante’s images of Muhammad and Ali. It further compels us to look at key instances of engagement among Muslims, Jews, and Christians.

Book Bernini

Download or read book Bernini written by Genevieve Warwick and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While Baroque artist Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) is celebrated as a sculptor, architect, and painter, it is less known that he also was a playwright, scenographer, actor, and director. The Baroque period saw the rise of opera and ballet, as well as increasingly elaborate scenographic technologies for court and religious theatre. Bernini drew from this lexicon of theatrical effects, deploying light, movement, and the porous boundary between fictive and physical space to forge a language of Baroque illusion for both his scenographies and his sculptural ensembles. "Bernini: Art as Theatre" investigates the different types of cultural space for the staging of his art, from court settings to public squares and church interiors. Drawing parallels between the visual and theatrical arts, and highlighting the dramatic amplification of religious art in the period, this provocative study provides a model that can be extended beyond Bernini to enable us to reconsider 17th-century visual culture as a whole.

For each drawing, the authors provide a discussion of the work's style, dating, iconography, and relationship to other works, as well as provenance and a complete bibliography.
