Book Fatigue Tests of Riveted Joints

Download or read book Fatigue Tests of Riveted Joints written by E. C. Hartmann and published by . This book was released on 1944 with total page 40 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A comprehensive program of fatigue tests of riveted joints in aluminum alloys was started in 1935 at the Aluminum Research Laboratories in order to learn as much as possible about the best method of designing aluminum-alloy structures to resist failure from repeated loading. The scope of this investigation was made broad enough to include not only actual joints in which load is transferred from one plate to another, but also specimens in which rivets of a structure where the rivets are used only for the purpose of holding two or more pieces in contact. The machines used in making the tests have previously been described.

Book Riveted Joints Fatigue Strength

Download or read book Riveted Joints Fatigue Strength written by G. D. Lindeneau and published by . This book was released on 1957 with total page 19 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of fatigue tests and strain measurements on riveted joints are presented. It was found that in addition to rivet pattern, thickness of splice plates played an important part. An improvement in fatigue strength of butt joints was obtained by laminating the splice plate so that the first row of rivets engaged only the first of the laminates. The increase in life was attributed to a decrease in bending stress at the first row of rivets, and to a more equal load distribution between the first and second row of rivets. It was also found that static overloading prior to fatigue testing was harmful in some cases and beneficial in others--harmful where the overload was just sufficient to cause relaxing of the residual stress set up by riveting and beneficial where it was carried high enough to cause redistribution of the load between rivets.

Book excerpt: During the latter part of 1943, a comprehensive series of tests was undertaken by the Aluminum Research Laboratories to determine the fatigue strength of various types of riveted and spot-welded joints in the aluminum alloys of current interest in aircraft design. This progress report presents the results obtained to date on the riveted joints of the series.

Book A Practical Engineering Approach to Predicting Fatigue Crack Growth in Riveted Lap Joints

Download or read book A Practical Engineering Approach to Predicting Fatigue Crack Growth in Riveted Lap Joints written by C. E. Harris and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An extensive experimental database has been assembled from very detailed teardown examinations of fatigue cracks found in rivet holes of fuselage structural components. Based on this experimental database, a comprehensive analysis methodology was developed to predict the onset of widespread fatigue damage in lap joints of fuselage structure. Several computer codes were developed with specialized capabilities to conduct the various analyses that make up the comprehensive methodology. Over the past several years, the authors have interrogated various aspects of the analysis methods to determine the degree of computational rigor required to produce numerical predictions with acceptable engineering accuracy. This study led to the formulation of a practical engineering approach to predicting fatigue crack growth in riveted lap joints. This paper describes the practical engineering approach and compares predictions with the results from several experimental studies.

Book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage

Download or read book Riveted Lap Joints in Aircraft Fuselage written by Andrzej Skorupa and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-06-23 with total page 346 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue of the pressurized fuselages of transport aircraft is a significant problem all builders and users of aircraft have to cope with for reasons associated with assuring a sufficient lifetime and safety, and formulating adequate inspection procedures. These aspects are all addressed in various formal protocols for creating and maintaining airworthiness, including damage tolerance considerations. In most transport aircraft, fatigue occurs in lap joints, sometimes leading to circumstances that threaten safety in critical ways. The problem of fatigue of lap joints has been considerably enlarged by the goal of extending aircraft lifetimes. Fatigue of riveted lap joints between aluminium alloy sheets, typical of the pressurized aircraft fuselage, is the major topic of the present book. The richly illustrated and well-structured chapters treat subjects such as: structural design solutions and loading conditions for fuselage skin joints; relevance of laboratory test results for simple lap joint specimens to riveted joints in a real structure; effect of various production and design related variables on the riveted joint fatigue behaviour; analytical and experimental results on load transmission in mechanically fastened lap joints; theoretical and experimental analysis of secondary bending and its implications for riveted joint fatigue performance; nucleation and shape development of fatigue cracks in riveted longitudinal lap joints; overview of experimental investigations into the multi-site damage for full scale fuselage panels and riveted lap joint specimens; fatigue crack growth and fatigue life prediction methodology for riveted lap joints; residual strength predictions for riveted lap joints in a fuselage structure. The major issues of each chapter are recapitulated in the last section.
