Book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics

Download or read book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics written by R.C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume, "Plastic Deformation of Ceramics," constitutes the papers of an international symposium held at Snowbird, Utah from August 7-12, 1994. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists and engineers from more than a dozen countries representing academia, national laboratories, and industry. Two previous conferences on this topic were held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and 1983. Therefore, the last major international conference focusing on the deformation of ceramic materials was held more than a decade ago. Since the early 1980s, ceramic materials have progressed through an evolutionary period of development and advancement. They are now under consideration for applications in engineering structures. The contents of the previous conferences indicate that considerable effort was directed towards a basic understanding of deformation processes in covalently bonded or simple oxide ceramics. However, now, more than a decade later, the focus has completely shifted. In particular, the drive for more efficient heat engines has resulted in the development of silicon-based ceramics and composite ceramics. The discovery of high-temperature cupric oxide-based superconductors has created a plethora of interesting perovskite-Iike structured ceramics. Additionally, nanophase ceramics, ceramic thin films, and various forms of toughened ceramics have potential applications and, hence, their deformation has been investigated. Finally, new and exciting areas of research have attracted interest since 1983, including fatigue, nanoindentation techniques, and superplasticity.

Book In Situ Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates in a Silicon Carbide Ceramic at Elevated Temperatures Using a DC Potential System

Download or read book In Situ Measurement of Fatigue Crack Growth Rates in a Silicon Carbide Ceramic at Elevated Temperatures Using a DC Potential System written by D. Chen and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 6 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The understanding of the mechanisms of fatiguecrack propagation in advanced ceramics at elevated temperatures (>800°C) has in part been hampered by the experimental difficulty in directly measuring crack lengths, and hence crack growth rates, at such high temperatures. In this study, we show how the direct-current (DC) electrical-potential technique, which has been used for such measurements in metallic materials for over 30 years, can be successfully utilized to monitor fatigue crack growth rates in situ in a silicon carbide ceramic at temperatures between 850 and 1300°C, because of the electrical conductivity in SiC at these temperatures. In addition to providing a highly efficient means of collecting such data, this approach offers several significant advantages over the techniques that have been used to date for advanced ceramics, particularly in avoiding artifacts due to thermal fatigue and oxidation from repeated exposure to air and/or lower temperatures while making measurements. Effects of parameters such as load ratio and loading frequency are examined, both on crack growth behavior and the accuracy of measurement. With appropriate considerations, electrical-potential calibrations determined at ambient temperatures in metallic materials can be applied readily to elevated temperature measurements in silicon carbide.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High Temperature Mechanical Behavior of Ceramic Composites provides an up-to-date comprehensive coverage of the mechanical behavior of ceramic matrix composites at elevated temperatures. Topics include both short-term behavior (strength, fracture toughness and R-curve behavior) and long-term behavior (creep, creep-fatigue, delayed failure and lifetime). Emphasis is on a review of fundamentals and on the mechanics and mechanisms underlying properties. This is the first time that complete information of elevated temperature behavior of ceramic composites has ever been compacted together in a single volume. Of particular importance is that each chapter, written by internationally recognized experts, includes a substantial review component enabling the new material to be put in proper perspective. Book Cyclic Fatigue in Ceramics

Download or read book Cyclic Fatigue in Ceramics written by Hidehiro Kishimoto and published by Elsevier Science & Technology. This book was released on 1995 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hardbound. Structural ceramics, such as silicon nitride, silicon carbide, alumina and zirconia have more potential than metallic materials for practical applications to various kinds of engineering components, especially for high temperature applications. For example, automotive engine parts, such as turbocharger rotors and swirl chambers, and ball bearing systems have been produced on a commercial basis using these materials for the last ten years. These industrial motivations have stimulated extensive progress in the research on evaluation of the strength properties of ceramics. In particular, cyclic fatigue has been investigated as one of the major concerns in the design of reliable ceramic components, and many researchers have been engaged in the field of cyclic fatigue in ceramics. As a result, new aspects such as crack bridging, R-curve behavior and fracture morphology have been clarified in the last decade. This book presents in three se

Book High Temperature Fatigue of Structural Ceramics

Download or read book High Temperature Fatigue of Structural Ceramics written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the research effort was to establish a fundamental understanding of high temperature fatigue in structural ceramics. Two additional closely related areas, environmental effect on fatigue and temperature dependence on strength and toughness, were also targeted where basic understanding needed to be acquired. We were successful in establishing a comprehensive framework as the basis for understanding fatigue and fracture over a broad range of temperatures, static/cyclic loading conditions, and environmental conditions. The premises of that framework were: (1) Fatigue at low temperature is a process of mechanical balance in which resistance to crack advance is due to increased shielding whereas the impetus for crack advance is due to wear-caused degradation of crack wake shielding. (2) Fatigue at high temperature is a process of slow (creep) crack growth. Cyclic loading lowers the friction of grain boundary. The difference in crack growth rate in static and cyclic loadings can be rationalized by the different evolutions of crack-tip stress intensity factor under different grain boundary frictions. (3) Toughness in monolithic ceramics is due to grain pullout. jg p.1.
