Book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Growth in Rubber Materials written by Gert Heinrich and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-03-23 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book summarizes recent international research and experimental developments regarding fatigue crack growth investigations of rubber materials. It shows the progress in fundamental as well as advanced research of fracture investigation of rubber material under fatigue loading conditions, especially from the experimental point of view. However, some chapters will describe the progress in numerical modeling and physical description of fracture mechanics and cavitation phenomena in rubbers. Initiation and propagation of cracks in rubber materials are dominant phenomena which determine the lifetime of these soft rubber materials and, as a consequence, the lifetime of the corresponding final rubber parts in various fields of application. Recently, these phenomena became of great scientific interest due to the development of new experimental methods, concepts and models. Furthermore, crack phenomena have an extraordinary impact on rubber wear and abrasion of automotive tires; and understanding of crack initiation and growth in rubbers will help to support the growthing number of activities and worldwide efforts of reduction of tire wear losses and abrasion based emissions.

Book Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers

Download or read book Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers written by Laurence W. McKeen and published by Butterworth-Heinemann. This book was released on 2009-11-17 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Part of a series of core databooks within the William Andrew Plastics Design Library, Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers provides a comprehensive collection of graphical multipoint data and tabular data covering fatigue and tribology. The concept of fatigue is very straightforward: if an object is subjected to a stress or deformation, and it is repeated, the object becomes weaker. This weakening of plastic material is called fatigue. Tribology is the science and technology of surfaces in contact with each other and therefore covers friction, lubrication and wear. The reduction of wear and fatigue and the improvement of lubrication are key bottom-line issues for engineers and scientists involved in the plastics industry and product design with plastics.Fatigue and Tribological Properties of Plastics and Elastomers, Second Edition is an update of all that has changed in the world of plastics since the 1st edition appeared nearly 15 years ago, and has been reorganized from a polymer chemistry point of view. - A hard-working reference tool: part of the daily workflow of engineers and scientists involved in the plastics industry and product design with plastics - The reduction of wear and fatigue and the improvement of lubrication are key bottom-line issues - The data in this book provide engineers with the tools they need to design for low failure rates

Book Constitutive Models for Rubber X

Download or read book Constitutive Models for Rubber X written by Alexander Lion and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2017 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In order to develop innovative products, to reduce development costs and the number of prototypes and to accelerate development processes, numerical simulations become more and more attractive. As such, numerical simulations are instrumental in understanding complicated material properties like chemical ageing, crack propagation or the strain- and temperature-induced crystallisation of rubber. Therefore, experimentally validated and physically meaningful constitutive models are indispensable. Elastomers are used for products like tyres, engine and suspension mounts or seals, to name a few. The interest in modelling the quasi-static stress-strain behaviour was dominant in the past decades, but nowadays the interests also include influences of environmental conditions. The latest developments on the material behaviour of elastomers are collected in the present volume.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rubber components subjected to fluctuating loads often fail due to the nucleation and growth of defects or cracks. This study review the rubber types with their properties and applications, review the analysis approaches that are currently available for predicting fatigue life in rubber. Both crack nucleation and crack growth approaches are considered. A discussion of each approach and applications of these approaches have been applied in engineering analysis are presented. Also review the factors that affect on mechanical fatigue life of rubber components. Four major categories of factors are reviewed here: the effects of mechanical loading history, environmental effects, effects of rubber formulation, and effects due to dissipative aspects of the constitutive response of rubber. The constitutive models are widely used in Finite Element Analysis FEA packages for rubber components are presented; and presented here the applications of FEA to study the fatigue lifetime of rubber.

Book Experimental Determination of Fatigue Life for International Rubber Hardness Degree 60 Engine Mount Rubber

Download or read book Experimental Determination of Fatigue Life for International Rubber Hardness Degree 60 Engine Mount Rubber written by Maryam Hosseini and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the new millennium era, rubber materials are vigorously used in many industries including automotive that cover a wide range of applications such as tires, seals, belts, bushes and engine mounts. Rubber is an ideal material for many applications because it can withstand very large strain with no permanent deformation or fracture. The behavior of material under repeated loads differs from static loads. Elastomers fail at cyclic stress or strain amplitude much lower than static stress or strain. It is based on growth of cracks through the material. The fatigue analysis and its lifetime evaluation are very important in design procedure to assure the safety and reliability of the rubber components. Design of rubber against fatigue failure is one of the important topics to be focussed for checking the failures during its operation life. Many mechanical and environmental factors could prolong the rubber fatigue life. The fatigue failure process of materials is explained by two approaches including crack initiation and crack propagation. The present work deals with investigation of the fatigue behavior using rubber dumbbell test specimens under uniaxial loading. The material used in this study is a vulcanized natural rubber with a typical engine mount formulation and the hardness of International Rubber Hardness Degree 60. Test specimens were designed based on type 2 of MS ISO 37 standard and used for tensile and fatigue tests, both in ambient temperature. Fatigue tests were conducted under the displacement controlled condition with a sine waveform of 0.1 Hz and the ratio of the minimum displacement to the maximum displacement was equal to zero. The experimental results were presented under strain controlled condition. For investigation of the fatigue damage behavior, a theoretical equation was developed based on the continuum damage mechanics theory. The Ogden strain energy potential of first order was used for defining a constitutive relation of the natural rubber. The proposed theoretical formula was based on function of the strain range under cyclic loading to determine the fatigue life of elastomeric material. The ability of predicted fatigue life shows a reasonable agreement of 98% with experimental values. The experimental results and theoretical equation were validated with the previous experimental data which show a good agreement of 97% and 93% respectively.

Book Experimental Investigation of the Fatigue Behaviour of Natural Rubber Under Different Loading and Environment Conditions

Download or read book Experimental Investigation of the Fatigue Behaviour of Natural Rubber Under Different Loading and Environment Conditions written by Can Zhang and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural rubber is widely used in industrial fields owing to its good elasticity and ductility. It is important to study the fatigue behaviour of rubber because it affects the service life of rubber products. The objectives of this study were to (1) investigate a protocol of rounded samples to understand how deformation, temperature, frequency, and aging impact natural rubber fatigue behavior; (2) determine the relationship between the number of fatigue life cycles and the applied load for various loading and environment conditions; (3) evaluate the macromorphology of the fracture area and observe the crack propagation rate and direction. When the frequency is below 5Hz and the deformation is 25% strain level, the crack growth rate is stable, the fracture interface is flat, and the fatigue life is long. Moreover, temperature influences include the effect of the environmental temperature and the heat generated by the self-heating of rubber.
