The weldment was made of isothermally annealed 21⁄4Cr-1Mo steel base metal and ERNiCr-3 weld metal. Fatigue crack growth rate data for thermally aged HAZ material lie between the two scatter bands of data for the base metal and ERNiCr3 filler metal at 510°C. Prior thermal aging up to 2000 h at 566°C does not substantially change the fatigue crack growth rate of HAZ material at 510°C. Fatigue crack growth rate of HAZ material increases with decreasing frequency at 510°C and stress ratio of 0.05 for 20 MPam

The first chapter provides an overview of the various hot cracking phenomena. Different mechanisms of solidification cracking proposed in the past decades are summarized and new insight is particularly given into the mechanism of ductility dip cracking. The effects of different alloying elements on the hot cracking resistance of various materials are shown in the second chapter and, as a special metallurgical effect, the initiation of stress corrosion cracking at hot cracks has been highlighted.
