Book Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation in Steels Exposed to Inert and Corrosive Environments Final Report May 1 1977 December 31 1977

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation in Steels Exposed to Inert and Corrosive Environments Final Report May 1 1977 December 31 1977 written by and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue crack initiation life of AISI 1018 steel was investigated using compact tension specimens having sharp notch root radii. The data were analyzed using two methods for predicting initiation in strain cycling experiments. Also, another approach in which initiation is related to the stress intensity factor was developed. The next phase, that of propagation, was studied using AISI 1018 steel and a new high strength steel HY-180. The crack propagation data obtained for both steels tested in air can be described accurately by the power law first suggested by Paris, da/dN = C(.delta. K)/sup n/, where a is the crack length, N the number of cycles, and C and n are material constants. However, the exponent n was found to be two times larger for AISI 1018 steel than HY-180 steel.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1994, this second edition of Corrosion in the Petrochemical Industry collects peer-reviewed articles written by experts in the field of corrosion that were specifically chosen for this book because of their relevance to the petrochemical industry. This edition expands coverage of the different forms of corrosion, including the effects of metallurgical variables on the corrosion of several alloys. It discusses protection methods, including discussion of corrosion inhibitors and corrosion resistance of aluminum, magnesium, stainless steels, and nickels. It also includes a section devoted specifically to petroleum and petrochemical industry related issues.

Book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Some Ultrahigh Strength Steels

Download or read book Fatigue Crack Propagation in Some Ultrahigh Strength Steels written by Che-Yu Li and published by . This book was released on 1967 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fatigue-crack propagation studies were carried out on some ultrahigh-strength steels in controlled environments using the fracture-mechanics approach. The steels investigated include a medium-carbon low-alloy ultrahigh-strength steel tempered to two strength and toughness levels, a 250-grade 18Ni maraging steel, and a 300-grade 18Ni steel. The results indicate that, in the inert environment, the rates of fatigue-crack propagation in these steels are about the same and show no obvious correlation with other mechanical properties of the steels. The sensitivity of the rates of fatigue-crack propagation to the presence of moisture in the test environment shows rough correlation with plane-strain fracture toughness for steels of similar composition. The role of water vapor in promoting fatigue-crack propagation is considered. The results are also discussed in terms of existing theories and metallographic observations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bestselling textbook on physical electrochemistry caters to the needs of advanced undergraduate and postgraduate students of chemistry, materials engineering, mechanical engineering, and chemical engineering. It is unique in covering both the more fundamental, physical aspects as well as the application-oriented practical aspects in a balanced manner. In addition it serves as a self-study text for scientists in industry and research institutions working in related fields. The book can be divided into three parts: (i) the fundamentals of electrochemistry; (ii) the most important electrochemical measurement techniques; and (iii) applications of electrochemistry in materials science and engineering, nanoscience and nanotechnology, and industry. The second edition has been thoroughly revised, extended and updated to reflect the state-of-the-art in the field, for example, electrochemical printing, batteries, fuels cells, supercapacitors, and hydrogen storage.

Book The influence of water chemistry on fatigue crack propagation in LWR pressure vessel steels

Download or read book The influence of water chemistry on fatigue crack propagation in LWR pressure vessel steels written by P.M. Scott and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental programme designed to obtain corrosion fatigue crack growth data for pressure vessel steels are described. The work has concentrated on assessing the influence of various water chemistry variables possible in PWR or BWR primary coolants on fatigue crack propagation rates in A533-B steel. At a low cyclic frequency, 0.0167 Hz, the only variable found to have a significant effect on crack growth rates when compared with an inert helium environment at the same temperature, 288 C, is the dissolved oxygen concentration at levels in excess of 100 ppb. However, the effect of the oxygenated water on crack growth is observed to decay rapidly with time of exposure and this is attributed to passivation of surfaces previously created in a short period of time by high frequency cycling. At higher cyclic frequencies of 1.0 Hz or greater, periods of constant crack growth rate independent of the applied cyclic stress intensity factor have been observed in all the aqueous environments examined.

Book Environmental Effects on General Fatigue Resistance and Crack Nucleation in Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Environmental Effects on General Fatigue Resistance and Crack Nucleation in Metals and Alloys written by D. J. Duquette and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fatigue resistance of metals can be profoundly affected by environmental reactions which affect crack initiation and/or propagation. In the case of gaseous environments, oxide films or, in some cases, gas adsorption alone have been related to premature crack initiation for some materials. Crack initiation in other materials does not appear to be affected by gaseous environments, particularly at low temperatures, and there is not good agreement on the criteria which govern these phenomena. In aqueous environments, on the other hand, virtually all corrosive environments affect crack initiation processes, sometimes by a simple phenomenon of pits acting as stress concentrators and, at other times, through what appears to be a far more complex phenomenon. This review details the general phenomena of the effects of environment on fatigue lives and discusses some of the current models which have been proposed to explain environmental effects on fatigue crack initiation.
