Book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics

Download or read book Plastic Deformation of Ceramics written by R.C. Bradt and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 661 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This proceedings volume, "Plastic Deformation of Ceramics," constitutes the papers of an international symposium held at Snowbird, Utah from August 7-12, 1994. It was attended by nearly 100 scientists and engineers from more than a dozen countries representing academia, national laboratories, and industry. Two previous conferences on this topic were held at The Pennsylvania State University in 1974 and 1983. Therefore, the last major international conference focusing on the deformation of ceramic materials was held more than a decade ago. Since the early 1980s, ceramic materials have progressed through an evolutionary period of development and advancement. They are now under consideration for applications in engineering structures. The contents of the previous conferences indicate that considerable effort was directed towards a basic understanding of deformation processes in covalently bonded or simple oxide ceramics. However, now, more than a decade later, the focus has completely shifted. In particular, the drive for more efficient heat engines has resulted in the development of silicon-based ceramics and composite ceramics. The discovery of high-temperature cupric oxide-based superconductors has created a plethora of interesting perovskite-Iike structured ceramics. Additionally, nanophase ceramics, ceramic thin films, and various forms of toughened ceramics have potential applications and, hence, their deformation has been investigated. Finally, new and exciting areas of research have attracted interest since 1983, including fatigue, nanoindentation techniques, and superplasticity.

Download or read book Ceramic Matrix Composites written by Krishan K. Chawla and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 434 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Materials science and engineering (MS&E) is by its very nature an inter disciplinary activity. Researchers from a wide variety of disciplines, metal lurgy, ceramics, physics, chemistry, mechanics, electrical and electronic engineering, etc. can and do participate in the MS&E activities. The need and desirability of such an interdisciplinary effort is understandable inas much as advanced or high-performance materials are critical for any of the modern industries. It is almost a given axiom that progress in any field (energy, building materials, transportation, electronics, aerospace, electric power, consumer products, etc.) depends on the availability of suitable In this regard, let me quote from materials having specific characteristics. another work of mine: It is a truism that technological development depends on advances in the field of materials. One does not have to be an expert to realize that a most advanced turbine or aircraft design is of no use if adequate materials to bear the service loads and conditions are not available. Whatever the field may be, the final limitation on advancement depends on materials [1]. It is pertinent to quote from some other sources about a fundamental change that is occurring in the materials field: A fundamental reversal in the relationship between human beings and materials [has occurred]. Its economic consequences are likely to be profound. Historically humans have adapted such natural materials as stone, wood, clay, vegetable fiber and animal tissue to economic uses.

Book Acoustic Emission Testing

Download or read book Acoustic Emission Testing written by Christian U. Grosse and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-07-14 with total page 752 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides an introduction to Acoustic Emission Testing and its applications to different materials like concrete, steel, ceramics, geotechnical materials, polymers, biological structures and wood. Acoustic Emission Techniques (AET) techniques have been studied in engineering for a long time. The techniques are applied more and more to practical investigations and are more and more standardized in codes. This is because the degradation of structures due to ageing urgently demand for maintenance and rehabilitation of structures in service. It results in the need for the development of advanced and efficient inspection techniques. In mechanical engineering and concerning the monitoring of machines and mechanical components, AE is a widely accepted observing deterioration in the frame of structural health monitoring. The advantages of AE like sensitivity, damage localization potential, non-intrusive nature as well as developments in signal analysis and data transmission allow applications that could not be considered decades ago. As such, AE techniques draw great attention to diagnostic applications and in material testing. This book covers all levels from the description of AE basics for AE beginners (level of a student) to sophisticated AE algorithms and applications to real large-scale structures as well as the observation of the cracking process in laboratory specimen to study fracture processes. This book has proved its worth over the past twelve years. Now in its second edition, it will be a resource that sets the standard and equips readers for the future. All chapters from the 1st edition have been updated and rewritten and eight extra chapters (e.g also regarding AE tomography, AE in plate-like structures and AE for investigations of hardening of fresh concrete) have been added.
