Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fathers and Children Ell, Piotr? Is anything to be seen yet? Inquired a gentleman a little over forty years of age, in a dusty coat and checked trou sers, on May 2oth, 1859, as he emerged hatless upon the low porch of a posting-station on the 9 9* highway, of his servant, a chubby-faced young fellow, with whitish down on his chin, and small, dull eyes. The servant, whose every characteristic - the turquoise ear-ring in his ear, and his pomaded, party-coloured hair, and the urbane movements of his body, - everything, in a word, - betrayed a man of the newest, perfected generation, gazed condescendingly along the road, and replied: Nothing at all, sir, is to be seen. The present writer, some years ago, spent a spring at Ventnor in the Isle of Wight, and found the house on the sea-brink in which he stayed had been occupied by Turgenev at one time. Then and there it was, in 1860 and at Ventnor, that he had the first idea of this novel; and it is scarcely being too fanciful to think that he imagined the home environment and the spacious vista of the Russian provinces more fondly and more freely, because of his being at a long remove from them in that small and confined seaside nook Of Ventnor. Already, we must remember, the libera tion of the serf had taken place; and the ferment of liberal ideas was working in the new generation. As we look back. Book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea

Download or read book Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea written by O. H. Peters and published by CUP Archive. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Observations Upon the Natural History of Epidemic Diarrhoea The causative agencies from which springs the plentiful harvest of child mortality in large cities may be conceived as a felted mass of rootlets almost inextricably intertwined. Those of poverty, bad housing, bad feeding, and neglect, may be severally recognized, but the extent of their interrelations with actual respiratory and alimentary disease - those to which the greater part of the mortality is referred - can be traced only with difficulty. It is the object Of this work to aid ln the labour of cutting away the matrix and entangling fibres and to lay bare the hidden ramifications of at least one important causative agency - epidemic diarrhoea. This affection - if we accept provisionally the more novel and generally favoured conception. As to its nature - is revealed as something very like an ordinary infectious disease, and one which permeates all classes, while the excessive mortality it gathers round itself in urban centres must be regarded as something superadded, owing to the vicious circle it forms with those baneful conditions of slum life mentioned above. On the other hand, its peculiarly intimate association with the circum stances of domestic life, from the continual faecal pollution of the interior of the household by infants and others, tends to make it more so than other affections of the kind peculiarly a class disease, and an especial scourge of dirty neighbourhoods. Dirty towns may however be saved from excessive mortality by a high percentage of breast feeding. A notable point in the interesting comparison that can be drawn between diarrhoea and typhoid fever is that, in accordance with their peculiarly opposite age-incidence curves, the marked and habitual depositing of infectious excreta within the household in the former disease may make the question of water-closet versus conservancy pan a matter of far less importance than in the latter. Book excerpt: When in 1705 Kornell Csillag's grandfather returns destitute to his native Hungary from exile, he happens across a gold fob-watch gleaming in the mud. The shipwrecked fortunes of the Csillag family suddenly take a new and marvelous turn. The golden watch brings an unexpected gift to the future generations of firstborn sons: clairvoyance. Passed down from father to son, this gift offers the ability to look into the future or back into history–for some it is considered a blessing, for others a curse. No matter the outcome, each generation records its astonishing, vivid, and revelatory visions into a battered journal that becomes known as The Book of Fathers. For three hundred years the Csillag family line meanders unbroken across Hungary's rivers and vineyards, through a land overrun by wolves and bandits, scarred by plague and massacre, and brutalized by despots. Impetuous, tenderhearted, and shrewd, the Csillags give birth to scholars and gamblers, artists and entrepreneurs. Led astray by unruly passions, they marry frigid French noblewomen and thieving alehouse whores. They change their name and their religion, and change them back. They wander from home but always return, and through it all The Book of Fathers bears witness to holocaust and wedding feast alike.

Book Dear Old Father Classic Reprint

Download or read book Dear Old Father Classic Reprint written by Samuel Francis Woolard and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-25 with total page 74 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dear Old Father For this child's sake, and for the sake of my beloved, the Mother, I will be strong to endure and to work, in the days that are to come. I will keep my hands clean, and my heart pure, that I may ascend the hill of life and stand in its holy places. In this new Earth which the Lord has spread about me like a cloud, I see many children. Some have eyes full of light, and some have tears on their young faces, and shadows upon their hearts. But all are the sons and daughters of Jehovah, and because I am a Father, I must serve with patience, and with labor, to clear away the briars from the paths where their tender feet must walk. I will pray for them also, that the sun may shine on their way; that the gates of plenty may stand ajar for them; that the golden bowl of health may be full, like the pool in the valley where flow the waters from springs hidden in the heart of the bill; that the fountains of use fulness may be unsealed for them, and their hearts filled with joy in their work; that every evening they may lie down in the green pastures beside the still waters, where the Angel of the Lord will watch over them until the morning comes. Book The Training of Children in the Christian Family Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Training of Children in the Christian Family Classic Reprint written by Luther Allan Weigle and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-26 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Training of Children in the Christian Family This is a book for parents which deals with princi ples rather than with problems or cases. It aims to help parents to think for themselves; and does not undertake to present ready-made formulas for the training of children or prescriptions for use in various emergencies. It is not mere theory, how ever; most of its materials lie within the author's experience as parent and as teacher. The outline of the book is that of an introductory course for the training of parents, prepared and released by the International Sunday School Lesson Committee under the title of Hints on Child Training, as one of its elective courses for adult classes in the Sunday school. The editors of The Church School requested me to prepare a series of articles, following this outline, which might be used as a basis for study and discussion in parents' classes. In that form, the chapters of this book appeared in that publication, and have been used as a course of study by classes of parents in Sunday schools of various denominations, and as the basis for a year's programs and discussions by mothers' clubs and parent-teacher associations. It is hoped that the book may find a yet wider use by such classes and groups, as well as commend itself to the reading of individual fathers and mothers. My thanks are due to the editors of The Church School. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
