Book The Caveman Mystique

Download or read book The Caveman Mystique written by Martha McCaughey and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2012-09-10 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Has evolution made men promiscuous skirt chasers? Pop-Darwinian claims about men's irrepressible heterosexuality have become increasingly common, and increasingly common excuses for men's sexual aggression. The Caveman Mystique traces such claims about the hairier sex through evolutionary science and popular culture. After outlining the social and historical context of the rise of pop-Darwinism's assertions about male sexuality and their appeal to many men, Martha McCaughey shows how evolutionary discourse can get lived out as the biological truth of male sexuality. Although evolutionary scientists want to use their theories to solve social problems, evolutionary narratives get invoked by men looking for a Darwinian defense of bad-boy behaviors. McCaughey argues that evolution has nearly replaced religion as a moral guide for understanding who we are and what we must overcome to be good people. Bringing together insights from the fields of science studies, body studies, feminist theory and queer theory, The Caveman Mystique offers a fresh understanding of science, science popularization, and the impact of science on men's identities making a convincing case for deconstructing, rather than defending, the caveman.

Book The Time travelling Caveman

Download or read book The Time travelling Caveman written by Terry Pratchett and published by Random House. This book was released on 2020-09-03 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: *The final collection of short stories from the incredible Sir Terry Pratchett!* Imagination is an amazing thing. It can take you to the top of the highest mountain, or down to the bottom of the deepest depths of the sea. This where it took Doggins on his Awfully Big Adventure: a quest full of magic and flying machines. (And the world's best joke - trust me, it's hilarious.) It took three young inventors to the moon (where they may or may not have left a bottle of lemonade) and a caveman on a trip to the dentist. You can join them on these adventures, and many more, in this incredible collection of stories . . . From the greatest imagination there ever was. Written for local newspapers when Terry Pratchett was a young lad, these never previously published stories are packed full of anarchic humour and wonderful wit. A must-have for Terry fans . . . and young readers looking for a fix of magic.

Book Caveman Kids and the Baby Mammoth

Download or read book Caveman Kids and the Baby Mammoth written by Peter Legrove and published by . This book was released on 2020-06-09 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How did caveman kids survive and thrive before at the dawn of time when everything was stacked against themThe caveman kids and grandpa were always at the cave while their parents were out hunting or gathering food. After a successful mammoth hunt they bumped into a little lost baby mammoth and changed history. They were now mobile and they had muscle power. But they were up against nature and sometimes nature turned against them, but this time the baby mammoth sounded a warning, and the whole tribe got out of harms way. The baby mammoth had nowhere to go so she joined the herd and kept the kids happy and warm at night. But this is only the beginning: we shell keep an eye on what the caveman kids get up to as the baby mammoth get older and bigger and helps out at the cave.Life In A Cave On The Edge Of A Cliff A long time ago before planes and trains and before buses and bicycles. Even before we rode horses. During a time when everybody walked, "Rock Thrower" and his older sister "Little Leaf" lived with their family in a cave. Their home was on the side of a hill overlooking their beautiful valley. In their little family there was Grandpa and Grandma along with three uncles and two aunties. There were many little children with their own mothers and fathers. It was a big happy family all living together in the safety of the smoke blackened cave. Rock Thrower and Little Leaf's mother and father loved the cave and everybody in it and they somehow managed to keep everybody happy. Home was in a beautiful place, around the cave everything was green. The sky above was a deep rich blue and at night the whole sky was pinpointed with endless lights. It was beautiful to sit outside at night around the fire just looking up at the heavens. Life was good, there was plenty of food but they had to find the berries and bird's eggs. They followed the bees to the sweet juicy honey high in the tree. That was the easy part, now the fun part began. Only the grown-ups would get the honey. And then there was lots of laughter when somebody got stung and started jumping around the place. They all loved the honey, it was a welcome treat. Life in the spring, summer and autumn was good. Especially autumn when there were many fruits and berries to eat. But the good days soon gave way to the cool days of late autumn. Then out came the old hides that were hung over the cave mouth to keep out the cold and now home was a cozy cave.

Whether it was the power of the unknown prayer or the persistence of the soldier, that chance meeting changed her life into a roller coaster ride that was filled with fun and zany antics.Along Came a Soldier is a page turner in the style of June Harman Betts' first two books, Father Was A Caveman and We Were Vagabonds. It recreates the life of an American family immediately following World War II into the turbulent years of the Vietnam War.COMMENTS FROM ACTUAL READERS:I enjoyed June Harman Betts' articles in our local paper for years. Needless to say, I was thrilled to hear that she had written a book. AND WHAT A READ! ...As she did so well in her newspaper articles, she takes us to a place of memories, romance, heart-filled times of joy and sorrow-all while sharing the still unwinding story of our greatest generation. Dianne Cline, Denison University~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~As June Harman Betts pens the true story of the family's history, one becomes riveted by the highlights and heartbreaks of this intriguing family. The reader is drawn into the family's history with her ability to bring back memories of the reader's own bygone days through her vivid description of the various areas of the country where the family lived. One looks forward to her third book as she continues to weave her story with the young girl's marriage to a young soldier and their life together.James Ritchey, Newark, Ohio...Father Was A Caveman was so great, especially when it described days of long ago. I enjoyed it so much and also the sequel, We Were Vagabonds. June Harman Betts is a wonderful author. I could not put the book down. Even though I read it from the library in Petersburg, West Virginia, I had to order my own copy for future generations. Katherine Vance, Amazon.com Reader Review.

Rajeev is a typical husband, father and son in his personal life. In his professional life he is a typical office goer, a mediocre performer, working hard yet not moving ahead in career. He lives his life by the rules of the jungle, either hunting or dodging an attack. This is the journey of transformation of Rajeev from a hunter to a seeker. His partner in this journey is his father who had given up on him long back. As Rajeev implements the teachings from his father, he encounters very hilarious yet life changing moments. When challenged by his son, Rajeev makes a connection between his current mediocre life, his mediocre grades in school and everything in his life. He remembers that his father used to slap him every time he used to get average marks, urging him to study and be the best. The last that he remembers from his father are the words when he stopped slapping him, “Life does not exist in decimals, it exists as zero or one”. This is the story of Rajeev becoming what he was born to be- Rajeev, himself.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first monograph on the poetry of Paul Durcan, this book deals thematically with the dominant concerns evident from his first solo collection, O Westport in the Light of Asia Minor, published in 1975, up to, and including, The Days of Surprise, published in 2015. His work is marked by an unnerving emotional honesty and a recurring desire to undermine the pomposity of an Ireland struggling under the weight of inherited inconsistencies. One of the central arguments here is that Durcan has captured, more than any other poet of his generation, the complexities and contradictions inherent in Ireland’s emergence from the early, difficult decades of independence. The complex relationship between the public and private in his poetry is also explored, as well as the poet’s unflinching examination of his deepest personal relationships.

Book Queen Bee Moms Kingpin Dads

Download or read book Queen Bee Moms Kingpin Dads written by Rosalind Wiseman and published by Harmony. This book was released on 2007-01-30 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What happens to Queen Bees and Wannabes when they grow up? Even the most well-adjusted moms and dads can experience peer pressure and conflicts with other adults that make them act like they’re back in seventh grade. In Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads, Rosalind Wiseman gives us the tools to handle difficult situations involving teachers and other parents with grace. Reassuring, funny, and unfailingly honest, Wiseman reveals: • Why PTA meetings and Back-to-School nights tap into parents’ deepest insecurities • How to recognize the archetypal moms and dads—from Caveman Dad to Hovercraft Mom • How and when to step in and step out of your child’s conflicts with other children, parents, teachers, or coaches • How to interpret the code phrases other parents use to avoid (or provoke) confrontation • Why too many well-meaning dads sit on the sidelines, and how vital it is that they step up to the plate • What to do and say when the playing field becomes an arena for people to bully and dominate other kids and adults • How to have respectful yet honest conversations with other parents about sex and drugs when your values are in conflict • How the way you handle parties, risky behavior, and academic performance affects your child • How unspoken assumptions about race, religion, and other hot-button subjects sabotage parents’ ability to work together Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads is filled with the kind of true stories that made Wiseman’s New York Times bestselling book Queen Bees & Wannabes impossible to put down. There are tales of hardworking parents with whom any of us can identify, along with tales of outrageously bad parents—the kind we all have to reckon with. For instance, what do you do when parents donate a large sum of money to a school and their child is promptly transferred into the honors program–while your son with better grades doesn’t make the cut? What about the mother who helps her daughter compose poison-pen e-mails to yours? And what do you say to the parent-coach who screams at your child when the team is losing? Wiseman offers practical advice on avoiding the most common parenting “land mines” and useful scripts to help you navigate difficult but necessary conversations. Queen Bee Moms & Kingpin Dads is essential reading for parents today. It offers us the tools to become wiser, more relaxed parents–and the inspiration to speak out, act according to our values, show humility, and set the kind of example that will make a real difference in our children’s lives. Also available as a Random House AudioBook and as an eBook
