Yet even as a monk, he struggles with uncertainty. Is this how he is supposed to serve God? In "Father Sergius" Leo Tolstoy ponders religion, pride, lust, doubt, and the eternal question: How does one lead a moral life? Mary is the first and greatest disciple to be adopted by the Holy Spirit. By situating Mary within the life and mission of the Holy Spirit, Bulgakov maintains the respect and veneration that Orthodox Christians have for Mary, but also places Mary squarely within the community of disciples. Mary is a model disciple, who reveals that the goal of the spiritual life, spiritual motherhood. In addition, this text reveals the relevance and importance of Bulgakov’s contribution to the contemporary discussion about the role of Mary in the history of salvation.

Book The Holy Grail and the Eucharist

Download or read book The Holy Grail and the Eucharist written by Sergiĭ Bulgakov and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 1997 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These two moving studies by the eminent Orthodox theologian and sophiologist Father Sergei Bulgakov are remarkable in many ways. The first is a unique consideration--from the point of view of Eastern Christianity--of the Holy Grail, the chalice used by Joseph of Arimathea to catch the blood and water as it flowed from Jesus' side when it was pierced on the Cross by the spear of Longinus. This moment is described in John 19:34. Bulgakov's essay is a "dogmatic exegesis" of this passage in which, with astounding passion and precision, he reveals that the Earth itself and hence the human universe is the Grail wherein Christ lives forever. The second essay is also unique--the most important contribution to eucharistic theology by an Orthodox theologian. In the West, the meaning of the Communion bread and wine as the Christ's Body and Blood has been interpreted largely in philosophical terms deriving from Aristotle and Thomas Aquinas. Bulgakov insists on a christological and Gospel-based interpretation, one with tremendous significance for our understanding of the supernatural and sophianic nature of a world interpenetrated by the divine. This little book is a priceless gift, enriching our understanding of the Christian mystery and two of its deepest aspects, the Grail and the Eucharist.

Book Tales of Sexual Desire

Download or read book Tales of Sexual Desire written by graf Leo Tolstoy and published by Stacey International. This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tolstoy wrote some of the most disquieting short stories the world has known--these three are no exception. Here, the duels and duality of man and woman are played out in tortured--and sometimes tragic--drama. Above all, the characters featured in these pages bring to life universal truths for the human condition; truths that Tolstoy weaves with an almost unrivaled skill. "Father Sergius" is preoccupied with the material desire for the flesh, while "The Kreutzer Sonata" caused a public sensation for its scathing indictment of marriage. Tolstoy had become convinced that "Christian marriage" was an impossibility, and in both "Sonata" and "The Devil" he launches a tirade against human sexuality and the humiliating sexual ties that bind men to women. Together these three stories provide a picture of a man obsessed with questions of moral, sexual, and religious ambiguity, his treatment of female sexuality still having a resonance today.

Book Collected Shorter Fiction of Leo Tolstoy Volume II

Download or read book Collected Shorter Fiction of Leo Tolstoy Volume II written by Leo Tolstoy and published by Everyman's Library. This book was released on 2001-08-07 with total page 1018 pages. Book excerpt: Ranging in scope from lengthy novellas to fables and folktales only a few pages long, Leo Tolstoy’s short fiction provides a marvelous opportunity to become closely acquainted with Russia’s great novelist. Volume 2 of the Collected Shorter Fiction reveals how Tolstoy’s growing spiritual preoccupations flowered into a series of extraordinary late masterpieces that equal anything in the earlier novels for intensity and power. Readers of The Death of Iván Ilých, The Kreutzer Sonata, Father Sergius, Master and Man, and Hadji Murád will recognize the brilliant novelist now transfigured by his passionate quest for salvation and forgiveness. Aylmer and Louise Maude’s classic translations are supplemented by new translations by Nigel J. Cooper of six stories, including two that have never before appeared in English.
