Book Destiny and Desire

  • Author : Carlos Fuentes
  • Publisher : Random House
  • Release : 2011-01-04
  • ISBN : 0679604456
  • Pages : 433 pages

Download or read book Destiny and Desire written by Carlos Fuentes and published by Random House. This book was released on 2011-01-04 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Winner of the Cervantes Prize Carlos Fuentes, one of the world’s most acclaimed authors, is at the height of his powers in this stunning new novel—a magnificent epic of passion, magic, and desire in modern Mexico, a rich and remarkable tapestry set in a world where free will fights with the wishes of the gods. Josué Nadal has lost more than his innocence: He has been robbed of his life—and his posthumous narration sets the tone for a brilliantly written novel that blends mysticism and realism. Josué tells of his fateful meeting as a skinny, awkward teen with Jericó, the vigorous boy who will become his twin, his best friend, and his shadow. Both orphans, the two young men intend to spend their lives in intellectual pursuit—until they enter an adult landscape of sex, crime, and ambition that will test their pledge and alter their lives forever. Idealistic Josué goes to work for a high-tech visionary whose stunning assistant will introduce him to a life of desire; cynical Jericó is enlisted by the Mexican president in a scheme to sell happiness to the impoverished masses. On his journey into a web of illegality in which he will be estranged from Jericó, Josué is aided and impeded by a cast of unforgettable characters: a mad, imprisoned murderer with a warning of revenge, an elegant aviatrix and addict seeking to be saved, a prostitute shared by both men who may have murdered her way into a brilliant marriage, and the prophet Ezekiel himself. Mixing ancient mythologies with the sensuousness and avarice and need of the twenty-first century, Destiny and Desire is a monumental achievement from one of the masters of contemporary literature.

Book The Fate of Desire

    Book Details:
  • Author : James S. Hans
  • Publisher : SUNY Press
  • Release : 1990-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780791402894
  • Pages : 272 pages

Download or read book The Fate of Desire written by James S. Hans and published by SUNY Press. This book was released on 1990-01-01 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fate of Desire examines the problems of living in a decentered world. Assuming that the poststructuralist declaration of the end of man is an essential aspect of our current ways of thinking, the book focuses on the positive values inherent in this shift. In substituting multiplicity and fields of play for identity and hierarchy, and in distinguishing between desire as fullness and desire as lack, Hans argues for a vision of existence that is based on the difficulties Nietzsche posited as an inevitable part of fully affirming the rich but tragic nature of life. These reconceptions of the human scene redefine self-discipline in terms of understanding and loving one's fate. Instead of providing yet one more critique of the flawed values through which the Western world has constituted itself, The Fate of Desire takes up the task of weighing the things of the world anew, revaluing them in terms of our present understanding of our positions in the world. Hans suggests that if we are fated to be driven by desire, and if we are led to accept the ways in which our desire manifests itself according to our own individual fates, there is still every reason to believe that humans can find a productive way of understanding and fully occupying their place in the world.

Book excerpt: One of the preeminent natural philosophers of the Enlightenment, Benjamin Thompson started out as a farm boy with a practical turn of mind. His inventions include the Rumford fireplace, insulated clothing, the thermos, convection ovens, double boilers, double-paned glass and an improved sloop. He was knighted by King George III and became a Count of the Holy Roman Emperor. Thompson's popularity with women eclipsed his achievements, though. He was married twice and had affairs with many other prominent women, including the wife of Boston printer Isaiah Thomas and that of a doctor who would crew the first balloon to cross the English Channel. He even fathered a child by the court mistress of the Prince Elector and had affairs with several other German noblewomen. Drawing on Thompson's correspondence and diaries, this book examines his friendships and romantic relationships.

To make matters worse, he has a five- hundred-year-old feud with Death, and his best friends are Sloth and Gluttony. And worst of all? He's fallen in love with a human. Book Society of Others

Download or read book Society of Others written by Rupert Stasch and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2009-06-02 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This important study upsets the popular assumption that human relations in small-scale societies are based on shared experience. In a theoretically innovative account of the lives of the Korowai of West Papua, Indonesia, Rupert Stasch shows that in this society, people organize their connections to each another around otherness. Analyzing the Korowai people's famous "tree house" dwellings, their patterns of living far apart, and their practices of kinship, marriage, and childbearing and rearing, Stasch argues that the Korowai actively make relations not out of what they have in common, but out of what divides them. Society of Others, the first anthropological book about the Korowai, offers a picture of Korowai lives sharply at odds with stereotypes of "tribal" societies.

Book Love in Motion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Reidar Due
  • Publisher : Columbia University Press
  • Release : 2013-11-12
  • ISBN : 0231850514
  • Pages : 193 pages

Download or read book Love in Motion written by Reidar Due and published by Columbia University Press. This book was released on 2013-11-12 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book about how film encountered love in the course of its history. It is also a book about the philosophy of love. Since Plato, erotic love has been praised for leading the soul to knowledge. The vast tradition of poetry devoted to love has emphasized that love is a feeling. Love in Motion presents a new metaphysics and ontology of love as a reciprocal erotic relationship. The book argues that film has been particularly well suited for depicting love in this way, in virtue of its special narrative language. This is a language of expression that has developed in the course of film history. The book spans this history from early silent directors such as Joseph von Sternberg to contemporary filmmakers like Sophia Coppola. At the centre of this study is a comparison between Classical French and American love films of the forties and a series of modernist films by Luis Buñuel, François Truffaut and Wong Kar Wai.

Book Gone Girls 1684 1901

Download or read book Gone Girls 1684 1901 written by Nora Gilbert and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2023-07-03 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Gone Girls, 1684-1901, Nora Gilbert argues that the persistent trope of female characters running away from some iteration of 'home' played a far more influential role in the histories of both the rise of the novel and the rise of modern feminism than previous accounts have acknowledged. For as much as the eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British novel may have worked to establish the private, middle-class, domestic sphere as the rightful (and sole) locus of female authority in the ways that prior critics have outlined, it was also continually showing its readers female characters who refused to buy into such an agenda--refusals which resulted, strikingly often, in those characters' physical flights from home. The steady current of female flight coursing through this body of literature serves as a powerful counterpoint to the ideals of feminine modesty and happy homemaking it was expected officially to endorse, and challenges some of novel studies' most accepted assumptions. Just as the #MeToo movement has used the tool of repeated, aggregated storytelling to take a stand against contemporary rape culture, Gone Girls, 1684-1901 identifies and amplifies a recurrent strand of eighteenth- and nineteenth-century British storytelling that served both to emphasize the prevalence of gendered injustices throughout the period and to narrativize potential ways and means for readers facing such injustices to rebel, resist, and get out.

Book Rejecting My Fated Mate

Book excerpt: “Reject him! Submit to me! Be my mate, and I'll put an end to this war immediately," he commanded, his words resonating and enveloping the room in electrifying uncertainty. Caught off guard by this abrupt ultimatum, I found myself rendered speechless. The gravity of the situation silenced me, robbing me of the words I so desperately needed to speak. Vulnerability gripped me as I struggled to find my voice, my heart pounding viciously within my chest. “I cannot unless we sign the Treaty to ensure the security of our pack.” I stated. "Okay. The Treaty will be signed only if you reject him now." Quelling the turmoil within me, I summoned the strength to utter the words that would alter the course of my life. “I, Evelyn Green, the Beta's daughter from the MoonCrest Pack, hereby reject my fated mate, Gregory Blackwood, the future Alpha of the MoonCrest Pack. Instead, I submit to Alpha Adrian Lucius as my mate." Evelyn had eagerly anticipated her eighteenth birthday to shift for the first time and claim her fated mate, her beloved Gregory, the son of the Alpha and Luna of the MoonCrest Pack. He was scheduled to return from Alpha training that late afteroon. However, fate took an unexpected turn when MoonCrest was suddenly attacked by the rival Knightsmoor pack. Faced with the choice of accepting a contracted bond with an evil alpha to become his chosen mate or witnessing the annihilation of her pack before her eyes, Evelyn had no option but to accept Alpha Adrian as her chosen mate. What would you do when love demands the sacrifice of love itself? (Book 1 in the series. Book 2 is ready soon!)
