Book Fate of Spilled Oil and Ecological and Socioeconomic Impacts of Oil Pollution in the Straits of Malacca

Download or read book Fate of Spilled Oil and Ecological and Socioeconomic Impacts of Oil Pollution in the Straits of Malacca written by Norhayati Mohd. Tahir and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Starits of Malacca in one of the busiest international traffic lanes for oil tankers, posing increasing threat of major oil spillage in the area. In addition, tanker ballasting, pumping bilge by non-tanker vessels, operational activities at marine oil terminals, coastal refineries, and urban and river runoff contribute to considerable oil pollution of these waters. This paper discusses the impact of oil pollution on coastal marine ecosystems, particularly the socioeconomic impact of oil pollution in the Straits of Malacca. A brief review of the fate of spilled oil in the marine environment and the level of oil contamination in the Straits of Malacca is also presented. [Author's abstract].

Book Environment and Development in the Straits of Malacca

Download or read book Environment and Development in the Straits of Malacca written by Goh Kim Chuan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-08-04 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This unique study is the first in depth examination of the environment and development of the Straits. Taking an integrative approach, the book argues that the region has an underlying unity which political divisions (between Malaysia, Indonesia and Singapore) disguise. Its emphasis is on three major elements: first, a study of the historical geography of the region illustrates its role as a sea-corridor which connected the markets of India and China. Secondly, that contemporary patterns of economic development and trade have continued to increase the strategic importance of the region. Finally, the text highlights the major environmental problems, such as pollution, traffic and tourism, that now threaten the sea and coastline.

Book Monitoring the Long term Fate and Effects of Spilled Oil in an Arctic Marine Subtidal Environment

Download or read book Monitoring the Long term Fate and Effects of Spilled Oil in an Arctic Marine Subtidal Environment written by William E. Cross and published by King City, Ont. : LGL Limited. This book was released on 1987 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study reports a continuation of the Baffin Island Oil Spill project, during which oil was experimentally released during 1981 in nearshore waters at Cape Hatt, north-eastern Baffin Island. The objectives of this study were to monitor the fate and effects of the oil in subtidal sediments four years after the oil release. Data collected during 1985 in two of the project's study bays (surface oil release and reference) are analyzed along with corresponding data collected during 1981-83, including pre- and post-spill sampling periods. The study tests the predictions of increased oiling of sediments and effects on deposit-feeding benthos; elucidates whether the observed short-term biological effects improved, persisted, or worsened; and allows the opportunity of detecting possible long-term delayed effects that were not apparent in the second post-spill year.

Book An Operational Oil Spill Trajectory Model OILSPILL for the Malacca Straits

Download or read book An Operational Oil Spill Trajectory Model OILSPILL for the Malacca Straits written by K. S. Low and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A computer model 'OILSPILl' has been developed to compute oil spill trajectory for the protection of the vast coastal resources of the Malacca Straits against oil spill pollution. The oil spill model has taken into consideration vaious crucial components that determine the trajectory, dissipation and dispersion of the oil spilled in the Straits. Well-established empirical relations regarding such oil fate and dispersion are used. The model also uses results of a 2d tidal model, as well as documented sea surface currents observed in the Straits. Wind induced drifts are either computed from observed wind speed or retrieved from stored synoptic wind data and superimposed with computed localized land or sea breeze from a 1D land-sea breeze model. The expected time, location and the quantity of oil slick to be landed, if any, are also computed. [Authors' abstract].
