Book Fate of Accreting White Dwarfs

Book excerpt: The final fate of accreting C + O white dwarfs is either thermonuclear explosion or collapse, if the white dwarf mass grows to the Chandrasekhar mass. We discuss how the fate depends on the initial mass, age, composition of the white dwarf and the mass accretion rate. Relatively fast accretion leads to a carbon deflagration at low central density that gives rise to a Type Ia supernova. Slower accretion induces a helium detonation that could be observed as a Type Ib supernova. If the initial mass of the C + O white dwarf is larger than 1.2 Msub solar, a carbon deflagration starts at high central density and induces a collapse of the white dwarf to form a neutron star. We examine the critical condition for which a carbon deflagration leads to collapse, not explosion. For the case of explosion, we discuss to what extent the nucleosynthesis models are consistent with spectra of Type Ia and Ib supernovae. 61 refs., 18 figs.

Book Accreting White Dwarfs

Download or read book Accreting White Dwarfs written by Edward M. Sion and published by . This book was released on 2023 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The astrophysical process of accretion onto compact central objects is ubiquitous across the universe. The study of white dwarf stars has greatly expanded in recent years, and this book presents, from first principles, the physics of the accretion process onto white dwarfs. Among the resulting phenomena are isolated white dwarfs accreting interstellar gas and dust as they orbit the galactic center, white dwarfs accreting from the debris disks of tidally disrupted asteroids, comets and exoplanets in other exoplanetary systems, white dwarfs accreting from red giant winds in symbiotic variable stars, white dwarfs accreting from Roche lobe-detached main sequence stars, white dwarfs accreting in cataclysmic variables, helium accreting white dwarfs in the ultra-compact AM CVn binaries, accreting white dwarf explosions in classical novae and Type Ia supernovae, the cosmologically critical white dwarf supernovae that led to the discovery of the accelerating expansion of the universe and the existence of dark energy. This book is intended for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, astrophysicists who specialize in white dwarf studies as well as non-specialist scientists.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Workshop on White Dwarfs was initiated by Prof. V. Weidemann, with the first meeting organized in Kiel (FRG) in 1974. Almost every two years, an increasing number of astronomers met to share their results and projects in the subsequent workshops: Frascati (1976), Tel Aviv (1978), Paris (1981), Kiel (1984), Frascati (1986). In the mean time, two major IAU colloquia (No. 53 in Rochester, NY, 1979; and No. 114 in Hanover, NH, 1988) emphasized the importance of these stars for our understanding of stellar evolution. The informal organization of the white dwarf community has been the starting point for large cooperative projects of which the Hubble Space Telescope "White Dwarf Consortium" and the "Whole Earth Telescope" are the most spectacular examples. But many other successful collaborations have also been born during the very exciting discussions conducted in the last 16 years on the occasion of our regular meetings. The 7th European Workshop on White Dwarfs took place the year of the seventieth birthday of Prof. Evry Schatzman, whose pioneering work has been the inspiration for many of the new ideas in the white dwarf community. The Scientific Organizing Committee has agreed to dedicate the workshop to him on this occasion. We are pleased to publish as an introduction to the workshop, the text of the talk delivered by Prof. Schatzman at the workshop's banquet.

Book Accretion powered Compact Binaries

Download or read book Accretion powered Compact Binaries written by Christopher W. Mauche and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2003-12-04 with total page 504 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a well-edited and comprehensive survey of the current research in the field of low-mass accretion powered compact binaries, that is, binary stars containing a white dwarf, neutron star, or black hole as the primary star and a Roche-lobe filling low-mass as the secondary star. These stars have reached a stage in their evolution where the transfer of mass from the giant phase onto a dwarf or sub-dwarf star demonstrates many different aspects of physics. The volume is essentially a complete analysis of these stars combining theory and observation, and covering observations of low-mass X-ray binaries and both magnetic and nonmagnetic cataclysmic variables, theories of stellar accretion, novae, and evolution of compact binaries.

Book Neutron Stars Theory and Observation

Download or read book Neutron Stars Theory and Observation written by J.E Ventura and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 590 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Some twenty-three years after the discovery of pulsars and their identification as rotating neutron stars, neutron star physics may be regarded as comingofage. Pul sars and accreting neutron stars have now been studied at every wavelength, from the initial radio observations, through optical, X-, and "{-ray, up to the very recent observations in the TeV region, while theorists have studied in some detail relevant physical processes both outside and inside neutron stars. As a result, comparisonof theory with observation provides a test ofour theoretical ideas in fields as diverse as neutron and nuclear matter, superfluidity and superconductivity, the acceleration of high energy particles, and the generation and maintenance of intense magnetic fields. For example, through observations of glitches and post glitch behavior of pulsars, it has become possible to establish the presence ofsuperfluid neutron mat ter in the inner crust of neutron stars, and to determine some of its properties, while neutron stars in compact binary systems offer one ofthe most efficient energy generation mechanisms known. It is in fact the interactive interpretation of these ,diverse pieces of information that can lead to major advances in our understanding of the physics of these exotic objects, and justifies the characterization of neutron stars as hadron physics laboratories.

Book excerpt: The interaction between two stars in a binary system can lead to the dynamically stable accretion of H- or He-rich matter onto a degenerate white dwarf (WD). The accreted material constitutes a fresh thermonuclear fuel source that, when ignited, yields a wide variety of observable consequences. In this dissertation, we utilize a combination of analytic, semi-analytic, and numeric computations to explore the physics of stably-burning supersoft x-ray sources, classical and recurrent novae, including novae in cataclysmic variables with He core WDs, and convective He-burning shells. We also present the first detailed calculations of light curves and spectra for a newly predicted class of faint thermonuclear supernovae powered by He detonations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the advent of space observatories and modern developments in ground based astronomy and concurrent progress in the theoretical understanding of these observations it has become clear that accretion of material on to compact objects is an ubiquitous mechanism powering very diverse astrophysical sources ranging in size and luminosity by many orders of magnitude. A problem common to these systems is that the material accreted must in general get rid of its angular momentum and this leads to the formation of an Accretion Disk which allows angular momentum re-distribution and converts potential energy into radiation with an efficiency which can be higher than the nuclear burning yield. These systems range in size from quasars and active galactic nuclei to accretion disks around forming stars and the early solar system and to compact binaries such as cataclysmic variables and low-mass X-ray binaries. Other objects that should be mentioned in this context are 88433, the black hole binary candidates, and possibly gamma-ray burst sources. Observations of these systems have provided important constraints for theoretical accretion disk models on widely differing scales, lumi nosities, mass-transfer rates and physical environments.
