Book excerpt: "Are conservation and protecting animals the same thing? This book by an award-winning environmental reporter reveals they are not. Animal rights activism is surging in popularity, but the results are mixed, particularly when it comes to saving wild animals and the habitat that sustains them. Indeed, the championing of animal rights can paradoxically lead to the elimination of key charismatic wild species -- including elephants and lions. In an anecdotal and highly engaging style, Glen Martin takes the reader to the heart of the conflict -- Africa, where the world's last great populations of wildlife are the hostages in a fight between those who love animals and those who would save them"--

Book The Fate of Greenland

Download or read book The Fate of Greenland written by Philip W. Conkling and published by MIT Press (MA). This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Viewed from above, Greenland offers an endless vista of whiteness interrupted only by scattered ponds of azure-colored melt water. Ninety percent of Greenland is covered by ice; its ice sheet, the largest outside Antarctica, stretches almost 1,000 miles from north to south and 600 miles from east to west. But this stark view of ice and snow is changing--and changing rapidly. Greenland's ice sheet is melting; the dazzling, photogenic display of icebergs breaking off Greenland's rapidly melting glaciers has become a tourist attraction. The Fate of Greenland documents Greenland's warming with dramatic color photographs and investigates Greenland's climate history for clues about what happens when climate change is abrupt rather than gradual. Geological evidence suggests that Greenland has already been affected by two dramatic changes in climate: the Medieval Warm Period, when warm temperatures in Northern Europe enabled Norse exploration and settlements in Greenland; and the Little Ice Age that followed and apparently wiped out the settlements. Greenland's climate past and present could presage our climate future. Abrupt climate change would be cataclysmic: the melting of Greenland's ice shelf would cause sea levels to rise twenty-four feet worldwide; lower Manhattan would be underwater and Florida's coastline would recede to Orlando. The planet appears to be in a period of acute climate instability, exacerbated by carbon dioxide we pour into the atmosphere. As this book makes clear, it is in all of our interests to pay attention to Greenland.--Publisher description.

Book Environmental and Climate Change in South and Southeast Asia

Download or read book Environmental and Climate Change in South and Southeast Asia written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-08-07 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Based on pioneering research, this volume on South and Southeast Asia offers a cultural studies' perspective on the vast and largely uncharted domain of how local cultures are coping with climate changes and environmental crises. The primary focus is on three countries that have high emission rates: India, Indonesia, and Thailand. Whereas the dominant discourse on climate largely reflects the view of Western cultures, this volume adds indigenous views and practices that provide insight into Hindu, Buddhist and Islamic responses. Making use of textual materials, fieldwork, and analyses, it highlights the close links between climate solutions, forms of knowledge, and the various socio-cultural and political practices and agencies within societies. The volume demonstrates that climate is global and plural. Contributors are: Monika Arnez, Somnath Batabyal, Joachim Betz, Susan M. Darlington, Dennis Eucker, Rüdiger Haum, Albertina Nugteren, Marcus Nüsser & Ravi Baghel, Martin Seeger, and Janice Stargardt.

Download or read book Our Lady of Babylon written by John Rechy and published by Grove/Atlantic, Inc.. This book was released on 2013-05-07 with total page 332 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “A funny, sexy, stylistically elegant, tongue-in-cheek rewriting of history” from the New York Times–bestselling author of City of Night (Booklist). A retelling of the stories of the fallen women of history, recounted by an eighteenth-century lady who realizes that these women’s lives bear a remarkable resemblance to her own. Told by a mystic that her dreams are memories of past lives, she must face the public to vindicate all women falsely accused of crimes. “Mr. Rechy’s renditions of these seemingly familiar stories can . . . be surprisingly fresh, creating an ominous sense of tragedy and doom.” —The New York Times Book Review “With a colorful ribbon of feminist revisionism festooning its New Age wrapping, Rechy’s latest novel indulges in past-life grandiosity and some scandalous speculation about the erotic lives of Adam, Medea and Jesus, among others.” —Publishers Weekly “Subversive and quite funny . . . A fictional absolution of women known historically as ‘whores’ . . . framed by a deadly serious look at erotic history and a formidable exploration of the power of words and their interpretation to alter our existence.” —Booklist “Rechy writes gracefully, and sometimes poignantly, of the fate of fallen women over the centuries.” —The Washington Post

Book The New Ocean The Fate of Life in a Changing Sea

Download or read book The New Ocean The Fate of Life in a Changing Sea written by Bryn Barnard and published by Knopf Books for Young Readers. This book was released on 2017-05-02 with total page 41 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A fascinating look at the future of our oceans—and how human actions may change them. The Earth—our home—is covered mostly with water: the wide, deep, salty, and very blue ocean. It regulates our climate in a way that makes life as we know it possible. This huge ocean is full of an amazing amount of life, most of which is too small to see. But life in the ocean is in trouble. The ocean is becoming hotter, more polluted, and, in places, empty of life. The right amount of warming is good for us, but too much warming is causing shifts that are not good for life in the ocean. Global warming, pollution, and overfishing are creating a New Ocean, in which life is changing drastically. This book tells the stories of the probable fates of six sea dwellers: jellyfish, orcas, sea turtles, tuna, corals, and blue-green algae. What becomes of them may help you understand what becomes of us. Praise for Bryn Barnard’s Outbreak! and Dangerous Planet: "An absorbing narrative that includes touches of humor. . . . Teachers will find many uses for this, but the book is so engaging it will also attract browsers—and hold them.” —Booklist, Starred “An engrossing introduction for young adult readers to the chillingly topical subject of man vs. microbe.” —The Wall Street Journal

Book Death and Changing Rituals

Download or read book Death and Changing Rituals written by J. Rasmus Brandt and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2014-07-31 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The forms by which a deceased person may be brought to rest are as many as there are causes of death. In most societies the disposal of the corpse is accompanied by some form of celebration or ritual which may range from a simple act of deportment in solitude to the engagement of large masses of people in laborious and creative festivities. In a funerary context the term ritual may be taken to represent a process that incorporates all the actions performed and thoughts expressed in connection with a dying and dead person, from the preparatory pre-death stages to the final deposition of the corpse and the post-mortem stages of grief and commemoration. The contributions presented here are focused not on the examination of different funerary practices, their function and meaning, but on the changes of such rituals – how and when they occurred and how they may be explained. Based on case studies from a range of geographical regions and from different prehistoric and historical periods, a range of key themes are examined concerning belief and ritual, body and deposition, place, performance and commemoration, exploring a complex web of practices.
