Book excerpt: "This study was conducted to determine the fate of chemically-precipitated phosphorus during the overall wastewater treatment process under actual field conditions. Specific objectives were: to evaluate the removal of phosphorus with alum and sodium aluminate in a pilot plant activated sludge system, to determine the fate of the precipitated phosphorus incorporated into the microbial floc when placed in an anaerobic environment, and to observe the effect of aluminum on the digestion process. Five 38-gpd continuous-flow activated sludge pilot plant units were operated at the Rolla Love Creek trickling filter plant and were fed with settled domestic sewage. The sludge from the pilot plants, mixed with an appropriate quantity of primary sludge from the plant, was used to maintain five 3-1 anaerobic digesters. The parameters employed during the aerobic studies were influent and effluent phosphorus and aluminum, total and volatile suspended solids, and chemical oxygen demand; and those used in the anaerobic studies were phosphorus and aluminum in the feed sludge, the supernatant and the digester sludge, volatile acids, and gas production. The addition of alum and sodium aluminate to the activated sludge aeration chamber effectively removed phosphorus from domestic wastewater without adversely affecting the efficiency of the process. The precipitated phosphorus was concentrated in the digester sludge and was not released to the supernatant during anaerobic digestion, and the high concentration of the aluminum ion in the digester sludge produced no detrimental effects. The chemical precipitation of phosphorus in the activated sludge aeration chamber and anaerobic digestion of the sludge produced were found to be a feasible and effective method of eliminating at least part of the phosphorus input to lakes and streams, and could be incorporated into existing or future treatment plants with little capital expense"--Abstract, leaf ii.

Book excerpt: Alum and ferric chloride are commonly employed to aid phosphorus removal in wastewater treatment. Previous studies have indicated the use of these chemical coagulants produce sludges that adversely affect anaerobic digestion. The objective of this research was to assess the magnitude of effects chemical coagulants have upon anaerobic digestion by monitoring methane production and measuring concentrations of aluminum or iron present during batch digestion of chemically precipitated sludge. Alum addition to wastewater produced sludge that demonstrated reduced methane production when batch digested anaerobically. The magnitude of the adverse effects on methane production increased with increasing aluminum concentrations up to 144 mg/L. The type or nature of chemical floe that forms during the actual coagulation process may play an important role in influencing the magnitude of the adverse effects during digestion. The nature of the chemical effect appeared to limit the extent or degree to which the anaerobic microorganisms were able to metabolize the organic wastes and appeared to occur with the non-methanogenic species. Ferric chloride addition to wastewater produced sludge that, when batch digested anaerobically, demonstrated reduced methane production, however the magnitude of the adverse effects did not increase with increasing iron concentrations up to 770 mg/L. The nature of the chemical effect appeared to occur with the non-methanogenic species.

Organic matter is transformed into CH4 and CO2 by the action of different bacteria groups. The main advantages are the reduction of the volume of waste sludge and the production of methane gas that can be utilized as energy supply for the process. During anaerobic digestion of activated sludge from enhanced biological phosphorus removal process (EBPR-process), most of the phosphorus eliminated during the water treatment, as well as that from cellular lysis, is released. So that, phosphorus concentration in the digester increases and precipitation problems can occur. In this work, anaerobic digestion process of waste activated sludge and primary pre-fermented sludge was studied in a pilot plant. Furthermore, phosphorus balance was performed in order to quantify phosphorus precipitation in the digester. Separate and mixed thickening of sludges was carried out with the aim of study its influence in the process. NOTE: This thesis is in Spanish.

Book excerpt: Anaerobic digestion (AD) is a naturally-occurring biological process in soils, sediments, ruminants, and several other anoxic environments, that cycles carbon and other nutrients, and converts organic matter into a methane-rich gas. As a biotechnology, AD is now well-established for the treatment of the organic fraction of various waste materials, including wastewaters, but is also increasingly applied for an expanding range of organic feedstocks suitable for biological conversion to biogas. AD applications are classified in various ways, including on the basis of bioreactor design; and operating parameters, such as retention time, temperature, pH, total solids (TS) and volatile solids (VS) contents, and biodegradability of substrates. AD is an attractive bioenergy and waste / wastewater treatment technology. The advantages of AD for waste treatment include: production of a useable fuel (biogas/methane); possibility of high organic loading; reduced carbon footprint; and suitability for integration into a wide variety of process configurations and scales. Specifically, two important, and developing, applications exemplify the potential of AD technologies: (1) the integration of AD as the basis of the core technologies underpinning municipal wastewater, and sewage, treatment, to displace less sustainable, and more energy-intensive, aerobic biological treatment systems in urban water infrastructures; and (2) technical innovations for higher-rate conversions of high-solids wastestreams, and feedstocks, for the production of energy carriers (i.e. methane-biogas, but possibly also biohydrogen) and other industrially-relevant intermediates, such as organic acids. Internationally, the research effort to maximize AD biogas yield has increased ten-fold over the past decade. Depending on the feedstocks, bioreactor design and process parameters, fundamental and applied knowledge are still required to improve conversion rates and biogas yields. This Research Topic cover aspects related to AD processes, such as the effect of feedstock composition, as well as the effect of feedstock pre-treatment, bioreactor design and operating modes, on process efficiency; microbial community dynamics and systems biology; influence of macro- and micro-nutrient concentrations and availability; process control; upgrading and calibration of anaerobic digestion models (e.g. ADM1) considering the biochemical routes as well as the hydrodynamics in such ecosystems; and novel approaches to process monitoring, such as the development, and application, of novel, and rapid diagnostic assays, including those based on molecular microbiology. Detailed full-scale application studies were also particularly welcomed.
