Book FAT HAROLD

Download or read book FAT HAROLD written by Howie Thompson and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2012-02-17 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: COMMENTS FROM THOSE THAT ARE THE LIGHT OF SHAG DANCING “Harold Bessent and Fat Harold’s Beach Club are to shag dancing and beach music as baseball and apple pie are to America. The resurgence and continued growth and popularity of the shag and beach music are due in a large way to Harold's enthusiastic, energetic, and consistent support.” —Charlie Womble and Jackie McGee, professional shag dancers “Fat Harold’s Beach Club and Harold himself have kept a place to dance for years now, for those young and old alike. There has never been someone that has loved the dance and the people it brings into his life more than Fat Harold. Every beach band wants to say that they have played at Fat Harold’s Beach Club and HOTO’s! That must surely say something about Harold Bessent as a man!” —Jeff Hargett, 2005 National Shag Dance champion “I have known Harold Bessent since I was eleven years old, and for all that time and still today, he has provided a place for the people to dance and listen to this music called beach music. He is truly an ambassador, and I thank you.” —Judy Collins, owner, Judy’s House of Oldies, North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As defined by Wikipedia, beach music—also known as Carolina beach musi and, to a lesser extent, beach pop—is a regional genre that developed from various musical styles of the forties, fifties, and sixties. These styles ranged frombig-band swing instrumentals to the more raucous sounds of blues/ jump blues, jazz, doo-wop, boogie, rhythm and blues, reggae, rockabilly, and old-time roc k and roll. Beach music is closely associated with the style of the swing dance known as the shag or the Carolina shag, which is also the official state dance of both North Carolina and South Carolina. Recordings with a 4/4 blues shuffle rhythmic structure and moderate-to-fast tempo are the most popular music for the shag, and the vast majority of the music in this genre fit that description.

Book excerpt: ***WINNER OF THE 2018 MAINE LITERARY AWARD FOR SPECULATIVE FICTION*** An inventive metafictional novel, in which a drug-dealing biker must solve his own murder from beyond the grave. Thumb Rivera is in a bind. A college dropout, aspiring writer, smalltime marijuana grower, and biker club hang-around, Thumb finds himself confined to his rural ranch house in the desolate Maine countryside, helpless to do anything but watch as his former friends and housemates scheme behind his back, conspire to steal his girlfriend, and make inroads with the Blood Eagles, a dangerous biker gang. Thumb is also dead. A ghost forced to haunt his survivors and reflect back on the circumstances that led to his unsolved murder, Thumb discovers he has one channel through which he can communicate with the living world: Ben, an unemployed ghost hunter. Ben soon convinces local curmudgeon Fred Muttkowski, failed novelist turned pig farmer, to turn Ben’s Ouija-board conversations with Thumb into an actual book. Thumb has two things on his mind: To solve, and then avenge, the mystery of his own violent death, and also to tell his story. That story is American Ghost—as told to Ben, then fictionalized by Fred. It's at once a clever tale of the afterlife, a poignant examination of the ephemeral nature of life, and a celebration of writing and the written word.

Book The Routledge Companion to Theatre Fiction

Download or read book The Routledge Companion to Theatre Fiction written by Graham Wolfe and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2023-11-14 with total page 445 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Novelists have long been attracted to theatre. Some have pursued success on the stage, but many have sought to combine these worlds, entering theatre through their fiction, setting stages on their novels’ pages, and casting actors, directors, and playwrights as their protagonists. The Routledge Companion to Theatre-Fiction has convened an international community of scholars to explore the remarkable array of novelists from many eras and parts of the world who have created fiction from the stuff of theatre, asking what happens to theatre on the pages of novels, and what happens to novels when they collaborate with theatre. From J. W. Goethe to Louisa May Alcott, Mikhail Bulgakov, Virginia Woolf, and Margaret Atwood, some of history’s most influential novelists have written theatre-fiction, and this Companion discusses many of these figures from new angles. But it also spotlights writers who have received less critical attention, such as Dorothy Leighton, Agustín de Rojas Villandrando, Ronald Firbank, Syed Mustafa Siraj, Li Yu, and Vicente Blasco Ibañez, bringing their work into conversation with a vital field. A valuable resource for students, scholars, and admirers of both theatre and novels, The Routledge Companion to Theatre-Fiction offers a wealth of new perspectives on topics of increasing critical concern, including intermediality, theatricality, antitheatricality, mimesis, diegesis, and performativity.
