Book Age of Assassins

Download or read book Age of Assassins written by Michael Newton and published by Faber & Faber. This book was released on 2012-10-16 with total page 704 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These were the crimes that were meant to change the world, and sometimes did. The book connects the killing of the Kennedys or the murder that sparked the First World War with less well-known stories, such as the Berlin shooting of an instigator of the Armenian genocide or the attack on an American 'robber baron'. Taking in Malcolm X and Queen Victoria, Adolf Hitler and Andy Warhol, Charles Manson and Emma Goldman, Tsars, Presidents, and pop stars, Age of Assassins traces the process that turned thought into action and murder into an icon. In tackling the history of political violence, the book is unique in its range and attention to detail, summoning up an age of assassination that is far from over.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tradition had the League of Star Warriors being rooted in the Tejas Rangers of the Statea United on the mythical First Earth. However, while the Tejas Rangers rode horses over the vast wastelands of a single planet, Star Warriors flew and lived on their thunderturkies, as their class of battle starships were called. They went from planet to planet. Rangers fought with six shot slug throwers, rifles, and shotguns. Star Warriors fought with the latest technological weapon systems, including a sling pistol, heavily armed thunderturkey, and Hawk star fighter. Rangers rode with other rangers and were controlled by the Tejas government. Star Warriors operated alone and were governed by the League of Star Warriors. Rangers went after common criminals. Star Warriors went after master criminals, powerful criminal organizations, and other evil people, who were above the law for one reason or another reason or another. Rangers brought lawbreakers before judges, who handed out justice. Star Warriors were judges, juries, and off time executioners. Unlike other law enforcement professionals and members of military organizations, Star Warriors were still Star Warriors even after they voluntarily retired or were barred from serving on active duty. The forehead of each Star Warrior was covered with tattoos identifying him as a Star Warrior, telling how many years he spent of active duty, and telling the number of times he had been wounded. People sought out those tattoos when they needed help because the local police couldn’t or wouldn’t help them. Jack Quantum had been medically retired. Yet, he still operated as a Star Warrior. He stopped two assignation attempts, and saved a small boy from suffering through a painful and ugly death. He unmasked a major drug lord and stopped his plans to take over the star trader he was flying on. Jack became the Master of the star trader after being critically injured during a firefight the star trader had with an overwhelming number of starships. Yet, he was instrumental in saving the starship and over forty thousand people as it blindly flew across the galaxy.

Book The Fat Tail

  • Author : Ian Bremmer
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2010-05-13
  • ISBN : 0199750807
  • Pages : 273 pages

Download or read book The Fat Tail written by Ian Bremmer and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2010-05-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As Ian Bremmer and Preston Keat reveal in this innovative book, volatile political events such as the 2008 Georgia-Russia confrontation--and their catastrophic effects on business--happen much more frequently than investors imagine. On the curve that charts both the frequency of these events and the power of their impact, the "tail" of extreme political instability is not reassuringly thin but dangerously fat. Featuring a new Foreward that accounts for the cataclysmic effects of the 2008 financial crisis, The Fat Tail is the first book to both identify the wide range of political risks that global firms face and show investors how to effectively manage them. Written by two of the world's leading figures in political risk management, it reveals that while the world remains exceedingly risky for businesses, it is by no means incomprehensible. Political risk is unpredictable, but it is easier to analyze and manage than most people think. Applying the lessons of world history, Bremmer and Keat survey a vast range of contemporary risky situations, from stable markets like the United States or Japan, where politically driven regulation can still dramatically effect business, to more precarious places like Iran, China, Russia, Turkey, Mexico, and Nigeria, where private property is less secure and energy politics sparks constant volatility. The book sheds light on a wide array of political risks--risks that stem from great power rivalries, terrorist groups, government takeover of private property, weak leaders and internal strife, and even the "black swans" that defy prediction. But more importantly, the authors provide a wealth of unique methods, tools, and concepts to help corporations, money managers, and policy makers understand political risk, showing when and how political risk analysis works--and when it does not. "The Fat Tail delivers practical wisdom on the impact of political risk on firms of every description and valuable advice on how to use it. Ian Bremmer and Preston Keat offer innovative thinking and useful insight that will help business decision-makers find fresh answers to questions they may not yet know they have." --Fareed Zakaria, best-selling author of The Post-American World "Political risk has become increasingly complex, and The Fat Tail provides a truly new way to quantitatively assess it in established and emerging markets. It is essential reading for any CEO with multinational interests." --Randall Stephenson, Chairman, CEO and President, AT&T Inc. "Should be essential reading for anyone involved in international business even--perhaps especially--in places that seem politically stable." --Bill Emmott, former editor-in-chief of The Economist

Book The Crooked Ladder

Download or read book The Crooked Ladder written by James M. O'Kane and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-04 with total page 186 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ethnic organized crime is a phenomenon that has been largely ignored by social scientists and historians, and dismissed as a subject not to be taken too seriously by those researching the mobility patterns of their own ethnic ancestors or current minority newcomers. The Crooked Ladder represents a groundbreaking attempt to describe how some members of ethnic minorities have utilized organized crime as one vehicle of upward mobility, advancing from lower-class status to middle-class power and respectability.O'Kane illustrates the criminal road to prosperity as a process of displacement and succession: each group competes with and eventually eliminates its more established predecessor from the upper echelons of organized crime. This historical criminal succession mirrors the upward mobility of the Irish, Jews, and Italians in the larger, conventional noncriminal realm. Arguing that African Americans, Asians, and Hispanics are pursuing similar criminal routes, O'Kane takes issue with contemporary social scientists who view the current plight of minorities as unique in American social life.As a fundamental rethinking of the American ethnic experience with crime, The Crooked Ladder will be essential reading for social historians, sociologists, and criminologists. Now available in paperback, it will be useful in criminology courses and well as classes in ethnicity and social relations.

Book The Last Assassin

    Book Details:
  • Author : Peter Stothard
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2020-10-01
  • ISBN : 0197523374
  • Pages : 289 pages

Download or read book The Last Assassin written by Peter Stothard and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many men killed Julius Caesar. Only one man was determined to kill the killers. From the spring of 44 BC through one of the most dramatic and influential periods in history, Caesar's adopted son, Octavian, the future Emperor Augustus, exacted vengeance on the assassins of the Ides of March, not only on Brutus and Cassius, immortalized by Shakespeare, but all the others too, each with his own individual story. The last assassin left alive was one of the lesser-known: Cassius Parmensis was a poet and sailor who chose every side in the dying Republic's civil wars except the winning one, a playwright whose work was said to have been stolen and published by the man sent to kill him. Parmensis was in the back row of the plotters, many of them Caesar's friends, who killed for reasons of the highest political principles and lowest personal piques. For fourteen years he was the most successful at evading his hunters but has been barely a historical foot note--until now. The Last Assassin dazzlingly charts an epic turn of history through the eyes of an unheralded man. It is a history of a hunt that an emperor wanted to hide, of torture and terror, politics and poetry, of ideas and their consequences, a gripping story of fear, revenge, and survival.
