Book Histories and Discourses

Download or read book Histories and Discourses written by Siegfried J. Schmidt and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2016-03-30 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Siegfried J. Schmidt is closely associated in Germany with the cross-disciplinary research programme of Radical Constructivism. In Histories & Discourses he carries out a change of perspective from media and communication studies to studies of culture and the philosophy of language. His 'rewriting' of constructivism shows that classical constructivism shares some fundamental assumptions with realism, and he creates a new vocabulary which allows us to understand how we construct truth, identity, ethics, etc., without using any point of reference which lies beyond our culture (our 'history and discourses').

Book Professional Savages

    Book Details:
  • Author : Roslyn Poignant
  • Publisher : Yale University Press
  • Release : 2004-01-01
  • ISBN : 9780300102475
  • Pages : 328 pages

Download or read book Professional Savages written by Roslyn Poignant and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 2004-01-01 with total page 328 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In August 1882 the circus impresario P. T. Barnum called for examples of "all the uncivilized races in existence.” In response, the showman R. A. Cunningham shipped two groups of Australian Aborigines to the United States. They were displayed as "cannibals” in circuses, dime museums, fairgrounds, and other showplaces in America and Europe and examined and photographed by anthropologists. Roslyn Poignant tells the fascinating and often searing story of the transformation of the Aboriginal travelers into accomplished performers, professional savages who survived at least for a short time by virtue of the strengths they drew from their own culture and their individual adaptability. Most died somewhere on tour. A century later, the mummified body of Tambo, the first to die, was discovered in the basement of a recently closed funeral home in Cleveland, Ohio. Poignant recounts how Tambo’s posthumous repatriation stimulated a cultural renewal within the community from which he came, exposing the roots of present social and economic injustices experienced by indigenous Australians.

Book Travelling Concepts for the Study of Culture

Download or read book Travelling Concepts for the Study of Culture written by Birgit Neumann and published by Walter de Gruyter. This book was released on 2012-10-01 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together innovative and internationally renowned experts, this volume provides concise presentations of the main concepts and cutting-edge research fields in the study of culture (rather than the infinite multitude of possible themes). More specifically, the volume outlines different models for the study of culture, explores avenues for interdisciplinary exchange, assesses key concepts and traces their travels across various disciplinary, historical and national contexts. To trace the travelling of concepts means to map both their transfer from one discipline, approach or culture of research to another, and also to identify the transformations which emerge through these processes of transfer. The volume serves to show that working with (travelling) concepts provides a unique strategy for research and research design which can open up a wide range of promising perspectives for interdisciplinary exchange. It offers an exemplary overview of an interdisciplinary and international approach to the travelling concepts that organize, structure and shape the study of culture. In doing so, the volume serves to initiate a dialogue that exceeds disciplinary and national boundaries and introduces a self-reflexive dimension to the field, thus affording a recognition of how deeply disciplinary premises and nation-specific research traditions affect different approaches in the study of culture.

Book Cities and Fascination

Download or read book Cities and Fascination written by Wolf-Dietrich Sahr and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-05-23 with total page 262 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bringing together leading urban scholars, this book discusses the linkages between the economic, social and psychological factors of the urban environment. It focuses on the growth of private urbanity that has led to a 'spectactularization' of the city, the most extreme component of attention being the fascination which is aroused by attractions and state-managed events. The complex characteristics of this fascination are examined under the dimensions of aesthetics, emotions, lived experiences and power structures and governance. The interdisciplinary nature of this collection has wide international appeal and will be of interest to academics of social and cultural geography and cultural and media studies.

Book Tradition und Traditionsbruch zwischen Skepsis und Dogmatik

Download or read book Tradition und Traditionsbruch zwischen Skepsis und Dogmatik written by Claudia Bickmann and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2006 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain

Download or read book Television Beyond and Across the Iron Curtain written by Kirsten Bönker and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2016-09-23 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From the mid-1950s onwards, the rise of television as a mass medium took place in many East and West European countries. As the most influential mass medium of the Cold War, television triggered new practices of consumption and media production, and of communication and exchange on both sides of the Iron Curtain. This volume leans on the long-neglected fact that, even during the Cold War era, television could easily become a cross-border matter. As such, it brings together transnational perspectives on convergence zones, observations, collaborations, circulations and interdependencies between Eastern and Western television. In particular, the authors provide empirical ground to include socialist television within a European and global media history. Historians and media, cultural and literary scholars take interdisciplinary perspectives to focus on structures, actors, flow, contents or the reception of cross-border television. Their contributions cover Albania, the CSSR, the GDR, Russia and the Soviet Union, Serbia, Slovenia and Yugoslavia, thus complementing Western-dominated perspectives on Cold War mass media with a specific focus on the spaces and actors of East European communication. Last but not least, the volume takes a long-term perspective crossing the fall of the Iron Curtain, as many trends of the post-socialist period are linked to, or pick up, socialist traditions.

Book The Creation of Reality

Download or read book The Creation of Reality written by Bernhard Poerksen and published by Andrews UK Limited. This book was released on 2013-07-09 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Constructivism has been traded as a new paradigm by its advocates, and criticised by its opponents as legitimating deceit and lies, as justifying a trendy post-modern "Anything goes". In this book, Bernhard Poerksen draws up a new rationale for constructivist thinking and charts out directions for the imaginative examination of personal certainties and the certainties of others, of ideologies great and small. The focus of the debate is on the author's thesis that our understanding of journalism and, in particular, the education and training of journalists, would profit substantially from constructivist insights. These insights instigate, the claim is, an original kind of scepticism; they provide the underpinnings of a modern type of didactics oriented by the autonomy of learners; and they supply the sustaining arguments for a radical ethic of responsibility in journalism.

Book Original Copy Fake

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ernst Pernicka
  • Publisher : Philipp Von Zabern

  • Pages : 204 pages

Download or read book Original Copy Fake written by Ernst Pernicka and published by Philipp Von Zabern. This book was released on 2008 with total page 204 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English summary: It is not always easy to decide whether an object of art or an antiquity is authentic or not. On the one hand, there is a gradual transition from "improving" restoration to outright deceit. On the other hand, the methods applied in the production of fakes become ever more sophisticated so that fakes are sometimes incorporated even in respected and well-known collections. This situation is even more unfortunate as these collections represent points of reference for further stylistic investigations and comparisons. Bochum-based foundation Situation Kunst owns a substantial collection of West African art which has been the subject of controversial opinions concerning its authenticity. The questions posed in the title of this book gave rise to an exchange of positions and experiences between art historians, ethnologists, scientists and restorers at a meeting at Ruhr-University Bochum in February 2007. The results of this memorable symposium are collected in this volume.
