Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fasting for the Cure of Disease Self-conceit, credulity, and skepticism are said to go hand in hand; and candor compels the remark that these graces are not confined to the ignorant or to the uneducated. If a man be a skeptic, he can but mean that certain things do not exist relatively to his own knowledge; but no one can deny the possibility of the existence of that which he cannot har monize with his accepted opinions, or of which he is ignorant. Should he do so, the conclusion holds that he is Just as credulous as the man who believes without discrimination. When an extraordinary fact, a fact be yond its own experience, is presented to a mind vicariously moulded, more often than not it is rejected as impossible or as the result of disordered physical condi tions. In these circumstances even the testimony of the senses is repudiated, and that of credible witnesses is frequently imputed to base motives. Book The Fasting Cure Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Fasting Cure Classic Reprint written by Upton Sinclair and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-15 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Fasting Cure is both a fascinating and slightly dangerous book. It was written by Upton Sinclair, a respectable and accomplished journalist, but no doctor. In this case Sinclair seems to have been taken in by his subject matter without using quite enough of his critical faculties. Fasting has been a part of health and religious practices since time immemorial, it can be healthy in moderation and has various well-documented effects on the body. From this perspective Sinclair's book is worthwhile for the hints and tips towards more sensible fasters and also as a historical document of the "fasting fever" which occurred around the time of writing. One thing fasting is not however is a cure for cancer, or for several others of the diseases claimed within. Another problem with this book is the claim that fasts for up to 40 or 50 days are common and healthy, modern medical advice would suggest that this is far too extreme and very dangerous. Rather than a single book this is a collection of articles written by Upton Sinclair on the topic of fasting as well as letters on the topic which he received. His remarks and comments on these are also included and serve to bind the parts together. Readers may be interested in this work from a historical or anthropological point of view especially, but should not follow the instructions without close contact with their physician. Book excerpt: 'Fasting For The Cure of Disease' was originally published as a distributable work to assist those individuals who were seeking out new ways to heal themselves of whatever malady (perceived or otherwise) they were afflicted with. What it became in the end, sadly, was something quite the opposite in nature. The work garnered both national and international attention, and led to the starvation - and murder - of individuals in the care of Dr. Hazzard at her Wilderness Heights facility in Olalla, Washington. Following the scandal that ensued, Dr. Hazzard continued to be a staunch proponent of her beliefs. In fact she was so convinced of their merits that she ultimately perished in 1938 while conducting a fasting regimen upon herself. This book is a faithful reproduction of the text of Dr. Hazzard's original work.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fasting Girls: Their Physiology and Pathology In issuing this little book I have been actuated by a desire to do something towards the removal of a lamentable degree of popular ignorance. It seems that no proposition that 'can be made is so absurd or impossible but that many people, ordinarily regarded as intelligent, will be found to accept it and to aid in its propaga tion. And hence, when it is asserted that a young lady has lived for fourteen years without food of any kind, hundreds and thousands of persons throughout the length and breadth of a civilized land at once yield their belief to the monstrous declaration. I have confined my remarks entirely to the question of abstinence from food. The other supernatural gifts, the pos session of which is claimed, would, if considered, have extended the limits of this little volume beyond the bounds which were deemed expedient. At some future time I may be tempted to discuss them. In the meantime it is well to call to mind that a proposition Appendix) which I made solely in the interest of truth was disregarded, ostensibly with the desire to avoid publicity, when in fact the daily press had for weeks been filled with reports in detail, furnished by the friends Of the young lady in question, of the marvellous powers she was said to possess. A portion of this essay, which bore upon the matter discussed, has been taken from another volume by the author, published several years ago and now out of print. Book The Oldest Cure in the World

Download or read book The Oldest Cure in the World written by Steve Hendricks and published by Abrams. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “An illuminating exploration of the rich and varied history—and myriad health benefits—of fasting.” —Wall Street Journal When should we eat, and when shouldn’t we? The answers to these simple questions are not what you might expect. As Steve Hendricks shows in The Oldest Cure in the World, stop eating long enough, and you’ll set in motion cellular repairs that can slow aging and prevent and reverse diseases like diabetes and hypertension. Fasting has improved the lives of people with epilepsy, asthma, and arthritis, and has even protected patients from the worst of chemotherapy’s side effects. But for such an elegant and effective treatment, fasting has had a surprisingly long and fraught history. From the earliest days of humanity and the Greek fathers of medicine through Christianity’s “fasting saints” and a 19th-century doctor whose stupendous 40-day fast on a New York City stage inaugurated the modern era of therapeutic fasting, Hendricks takes readers on a rich and comprehensive tour. Threaded throughout are Hendricks’s own adventures in fasting, including a stay at a luxurious fasting clinic in Germany and in a more spartan one closer to home in Northern California. This is a playful, insightful, and persuasive exploration of our bodies and when we should—and should not—feed them.

Book excerpt: "This work presents Dr. Dewey's theories in a clear, concise way, giving the origin of the no-breakfast plan and the theories upon which it is based." -The Publishers' Trade List Annual, Volume 2, August, 1905 "Your boarding house lady is too besotted to reform; work out your own salvation. Omit breakfast or lunch at the table, and eat a small health meal in your room; such as fruit juice or a hot drink, or fresh fruit and whole-wheat crackers, or a good flaked cereal and cream with prunes, figs or berries. Read 'The No-Breakfast Plan' by Dr. E. H. Dewey." -The Independent, Volumes 86-87, April 3, 1916 "I have since found that my greatest service at the beds of the sick is as an interpreter of symptoms rather than a vender of drugs. As my experience enlarged so did my faith in Nature; Most of the cases of disease that fall to the care of the physician are trivial, self-limited, and rapidly recover under even the most crucifying dosages; Nature really winning the victories, the physician carrying off the honors. Feed, feed the sick whether or not, say all the doctors, say all the books, to support strength or to keep life in the body, and yet Nature was absurd enough to ignore all human practice evolved from experience, and in her own way to support vital power while curing the disease." -Edward Hooker Dewey, M.
