In the same manner we must understand the eighth month in the second year of Darius to express, not the eighth month of that second year, but merely the month of the Hebrew Calendar. The author, then, of the first book of Maccabees speaks of Hebrew months; but, when he dates by the years of the kingdom of the Greeks, he may be understood to compute those years according to their known commencement.
