Book excerpt: Fast wave heating in the ion cyclotron range of frequencies (ICRF) is being studied on the Princeton Large Torus (PLT) to evaluate its potential for heating large reactor-scale toroidal plasmas. Of primary interest are the two-ion and pure second harmonic heating regimes which, with proper control of the ion energy distribution and the rf power deposition profile, permit substantial energy glow into the bulk plasma ions. Initial heating experiments have been conducted with a single 1/2 turn antenna up to wave powers of P/sub rf/ approx. = 350 kW for durations of greater than or equal to 100 ms in the two-ion regime under conditions for which direct fundamental cyclotron damping on the minority ion species dominates the wave absorption. Ion-ion coupling serves to heat the majority ions and for energetic minority ion energy distributions, energy flow to the electrons results from electron drag. Substantial ion heating is found for D-p mixtures; .delta. T/sub d/(0) approx. = 600 eV for 350 kW with anti n/sub e/ approx. = 2 x 1013 cm−3. The deuteron heating efficiency is improved by about a factor of approx. 2 in D−3He mixtures; .delta. T/sub d/(0) approx. = 500 eV for 150 kW with anti n/sub e/ approx. = 2.1 x 1013 cm−3.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent experimental results for ICRF heating in PLT are presented. For the two-ion regime in D-H or D-3He plasmas minority H and 3He ions are found to absorb the rf power and transfer it to the deuterons and electrons in accordance with Fokker-Planck theory. The deuteron heating rate is approx. 3 eV x 1013 cm−3/kW for H and approx. 6 eV x 1013 cm−3/kW for 3He minorities. Neutron fluxes of approx. 3 x 1011 sec−1 corresponding to a T/sub d/ approx. 2 keV (.delta. T/sub d/ approx. 1.2 keV) have been produced with P/sub rf/ approx. = 620 kW at anti n/sub e/ approx. = 2.9 x 1013 cm−3. Neutron energy spectra and mass sensitive charge exchange spectra indicate Maxwellian deuteron distributions. In addition, D-3He fusion reaction rates greater than or equal to 1012 sec−1 have been produced by the energetic 3He ions. For the second harmonic regime, initial heating results for an H plasma at P/sub rf/ approx. = 140 kW are consistent with the Fokker-Planck theory and the bulk heating rate is comparable to that of D heating in the D-H minority regime.

Book excerpt: "Blurb & Contents" "The reader is treated to constantly refreshing and engaging commentary and opinion that always informs....As she depicts them, the problems of the universe are always fascinating and, most of all, they are alive and compelling." David DeVorkin, Sky & Telescope Virginia Trimble offers readers a fascinating and accessible tour of the stars. An astronomer with shared appointments in California and Maryland, the author ranges over a large portion of the universe as she discusses the search for life on other planets, how galaxies form, why stars explode and die, and the nature of the elusive dark matter in the universe. She also explains the astronomical significance of Cheeps' pyramid and leads the reader through scientific speculation about what and when the Star of Bethlehem might have been. Throughout, Trimble points to the exciting unanswered questions that still perplex the field and considers the formidable tasks to be faced by the next generation of young astronomers.

Book Controlled Nuclear Fusion

Download or read book Controlled Nuclear Fusion written by J. Raeder and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Treats not only the physical, but the technological, ecological, and economic basis for using controlled nuclear fusion to produce energy. Topics on the development of fusion are examined without reference to the currently favored magnetic confinement and tokamak lines of fusion research except where problems are specific to them, in the case of a tokamak with deuterium-tritium plasma, for example. Discusses other less developed but potentially promising concepts for the future production of powerful neutron sources.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Humans do not live by bread alone. Physically we are puny creatures with limited prowess, but with unlimited dreams. We see a mountain and want to move it to carve out a path for ourselves. We see a river and want to tame it so that it irrigates our fields. We see a star and want to fly to its planets to secure a future for our progeny. For all this, we need a genie who will do our bidding at a flip of our fingers. Energy is such a genie. Modern humans need energy and lots of it to live a life of comfort. In fact, the quality of life in different regions of the world can be directly correlated with the per capita use of energy [1.1–1.5]. In this regard, the human development index (HDI) of various countries based on various reports by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) [1.6] (Fig. 1.1), which is a parameter measuring the quality of life in a given part of the world, is directly determined by the amount of per capita electricity consumption. Most of the developing world (~5 billion people) is crawling up the UN curve of HDI versus per capita electricity consumption, from abysmally low values of today towards the average of the whole world and eventually towards the average of the developed world. This translates into a massive energy hunger for the globe as a whole. It has been estimated that by the year 2050, the global electricity demand will go up by a factor of up to 3 in a high growth scenario [1.7–1.9]. The requirements beyond 2050 go up even higher.
