Download or read book Shape in Picture written by Ying-Lie O and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 685 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fields of image analysis, computer vision, and artificial intelligence all make use of descriptions of shape in grey-level images. Most existing algorithms for the automatic recognition and classification of particular shapes have been devel oped for specific purposes, with the result that these methods are often restricted in their application. The use of advanced and theoretically well-founded math ematical methods should lead to the construction of robust shape descriptors having more general application. Shape description can be regarded as a meeting point of vision research, mathematics, computing science, and the application fields of image analy sis, computer vision, and artificial intelligence. The NATO Advanced Research Workshop "Shape in Picture" was organised with a twofold objective: first, it should provide all participants with an overview of relevant developments in these different disciplines; second, it should stimulate researchers to exchange original results and ideas across the boundaries of these disciplines. This book comprises a widely drawn selection of papers presented at the workshop, and many contributions have been revised to reflect further progress in the field. The focus of this collection is on mathematical approaches to the construction of shape descriptions from grey-level images. The book is divided into five parts, each devoted to a different discipline. Each part contains papers that have tutorial sections; these are intended to assist the reader in becoming acquainted with the variety of approaches to the problem.

Download or read book Topological Algorithms for Digital Image Processing written by T.Y. Kong and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1996-07-17 with total page 301 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Basic topological algorithms are the subject of this new book. It presents their underlying theory and discusses their applications.Due to the wide variety of topics treated in the seven chapters, no attempt has been made to standardize the notation and terminology used by the authors. Each chapter, however, is self-contained and can be read independently of the others. Some of the basic terminology and fundamental concepts of digital topology are reviewed in the appendix which also describes important areas of the field. A bibliography of over 360 references is also provided. The notations and terminologies used in this book will serve to introduce readers to the even wider variety that exists in the voluminous literature dealing with topological algorithms.

Book Visualization in Scientific Computing

Download or read book Visualization in Scientific Computing written by Michel Grave and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visualization in scientific computing is getting more and more attention from many people. Especially in relation with the fast increase of com puting power, graphic tools are required in many cases for interpreting and presenting the results of various simulations, or for analyzing physical phenomena. The Eurographics Working Group on Visualization in Scientific Com puting has therefore organized a first workshop at Electricite de France (Clamart) in cooperation with ONERA (Chatillon). A wide range of pa pers were selected in order to cover most of the topics of interest for the members of the group, for this first edition, and 26 of them were presented in two days. Subsequently 18 papers were selected for this volume. 1'he presentations were organized in eight small sessions, in addition to discussions in small subgroups. The first two sessions were dedicated to the specific needs for visualization in computational sciences: the need for graphics support in large computing centres and high performance net works, needs of research and education in universities and academic cen tres, and the need for effective and efficient ways of integrating numerical computations or experimental data and graphics. Three of those papers are in Part I of this book. The third session discussed the importance and difficulties of using stan dards in visualization software, and was related to the fourth session where some reference models and distributed graphics systems were discussed. Part II has five papers from these sessions.

Book Geometry of Digital Spaces

Download or read book Geometry of Digital Spaces written by Gabor T. Herman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "La narraci6n literaria es la evocaci6n de las nostalgias. " ("Literary narration is the evocation of nostalgia. ") G. G. Marquez, interview in Puerta del Sol, VII, 4, 1996. A Personal Prehistory In 1972 I started cooperating with members of the Biodynamics Research Unit at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, which was under the direction of Earl H. Wood. At that time, their ambitious (and eventually realized) dream was to build the Dynamic Spatial Reconstructor (DSR), a device capable of collecting data regarding the attenuation of X-rays through the human body fast enough for stop-action imaging the full extent of the beating heart inside the thorax. Such a device can be applied to study the dynamic processes of cardiopulmonary physiology, in a manner similar to the application of an ordinary cr (computerized tomography) scanner to observing stationary anatomy. The standard method of displaying the information produced by a cr scanner consists of showing two-dimensional images, corresponding to maps of the X-ray attenuation coefficient in slices through the body. (Since different tissue types attenuate X-rays differently, such maps provide a good visualization of what is in the body in those slices; bone - which attenuates X-rays a lot - appears white, air appears black, tumors typically appear less dark than the surrounding healthy tissue, etc. ) However, it seemed to me that this display mode would not be appropriate for the DSR.

Book Vision Geometry

    Book Details:
  • Author : Robert A. Melter
  • Publisher : American Mathematical Soc.
  • Release : 1991
  • ISBN : 082185125X
  • Pages : 254 pages

Download or read book Vision Geometry written by Robert A. Melter and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1991 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since its genesis more than thirty-five years ago, the field of computer vision has been known by various names, including pattern recognitions, image analysis, and image understanding. The central problem of computer vision is obtaining descriptive information by computer analysis of images of a scene. Together with the related fields of image processing and computer graphics, it has become an established discipline at the interface between computer science and electrical engineering. This volume contains fourteen papers presented at the AMS Special Session on Geometry Related to Computer Vision, held in Hoboken, New Jersey in Ooctober 1989. This book makes the results presented at the Special Session, which previously had been available only in the computer science literature, more widely available within the mathematical sciences community. Geometry plays a major role in computer vision since scene descriptions always involve geometrical properties of, and relations among, the objects of surfaces in the scene. The papers in this book provide a good sampling of geometric problems connected with computer vision. They deal with digital lines and curves, polygons, shape decompositions, digital connectedness and surfaces, digital metrics, and generalizations to higher-dimensional and graph-structured "spaces". Aimed at computer scientists specializing in image processing, computer vision, and pattern recognition - as well as mathematicians interested in applications to computer science - this book will provide readers with a view of how geometry is currently being applied to problems in computer vision.

  • Author : Karl H. Höhne
  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media

  • ISBN : 3642842119
  • Pages : 449 pages

Download or read book 3D Imaging in Medicine written by Karl H. Höhne and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The visualization of human anatomy for diagnostic, therapeutic, and educational pur poses has long been a challenge for scientists and artists. In vivo medical imaging could not be introduced until the discovery of X-rays by Wilhelm Conrad ROntgen in 1895. With the early medical imaging techniques which are still in use today, the three-dimensional reality of the human body can only be visualized in two-dimensional projections or cross-sections. Recently, biomedical engineering and computer science have begun to offer the potential of producing natural three-dimensional views of the human anatomy of living subjects. For a broad application of such technology, many scientific and engineering problems still have to be solved. In order to stimulate progress, the NATO Advanced Research Workshop in Travemiinde, West Germany, from June 25 to 29 was organized. It brought together approximately 50 experts in 3D-medical imaging from allover the world. Among the list of topics image acquisition was addressed first, since its quality decisively influences the quality of the 3D-images. For 3D-image generation - in distinction to 2D imaging - a decision has to be made as to which objects contained in the data set are to be visualized. Therefore special emphasis was laid on methods of object definition. For the final visualization of the segmented objects a large variety of visualization algorithms have been proposed in the past. The meeting assessed these techniques.

Book Image Processing with Cellular Topology

Download or read book Image Processing with Cellular Topology written by Vladimir Kovalevsky and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-03-26 with total page 191 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explains why the finite topological space known as abstract cell complex is important for successful image processing and presents image processing methods based on abstract cell complex, especially for tracing and encoding of boundaries of homogeneous regions. Many examples are provided in the book, some teach you how to trace and encode boundaries in binary, indexed and colour images. Other examples explain how to encode a boundary as a sequence of straight-line segments which is important for shape recognition. A new method of edge detection in two- and three-dimensional images is suggested. Also, a discussion problem is included in the book: A derivative is defined as the limit of the relation of the increment of the function to the increment of the argument as the latter tends to zero. Is it not better to estimate derivatives as the relation of the increment of the function to the optimal increment of the argument instead of taking exceedingly small increment which leads to errors? This book addresses all above questions and provide the answers.
