Book Sustainable and Safe Nuclear Fission Energy

Download or read book Sustainable and Safe Nuclear Fission Energy written by Günter Kessler and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-05-08 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike existing books of nuclear reactor physics, nuclear engineering and nuclear chemical engineering this book covers a complete description and evaluation of nuclear fission power generation. It covers the whole nuclear fuel cycle, from the extraction of natural uranium from ore mines, uranium conversion and enrichment up to the fabrication of fuel elements for the cores of various types of fission reactors. This is followed by the description of the different fuel cycle options and the final storage in nuclear waste repositories. In addition the release of radioactivity under normal and possible accidental conditions is given for all parts of the nuclear fuel cycle and especially for the different fission reactor types.

Book Fission Product Inventory and Decay Heat Associated with FTR Fuel

Download or read book Fission Product Inventory and Decay Heat Associated with FTR Fuel written by W. L. Bunch and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 90 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The fission product inventory and the decay heat associated with driver fuel irradiated to goal exposure (45,000 MWd per metric ton) in the Fast Test Reactor is presented, based on calculations using the computer code RIBD with a nuclear data library prepared for the FTR environment. Curie inventories as a function of decay time are given for each of about 350 isotopes or isomeric states generated by the fast-neutron induced fission of either 239Pu or 238U, by down-chain decay, or by subsequent neutron capture. Beta, gamma, and total decay power are given in percent of operating power for decay times from 1 sec to about 10 years. Uncertainty in the decay heat calculations, based on propagation of the uncertainties associated with input nuclear data, is estimated. The uncertainty is calculated to be less than +̲ 10% for the first 10 days, and less than +̲ 20% over a 10-yr decay period.

Book The Fast Neutron Breeder Fission Reactor

Download or read book The Fast Neutron Breeder Fission Reactor written by Peter Hirsch and published by . This book was released on 1991-02 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, based upon a meeting held at the Royal Society in London, reviews the principles behind, the engineering and design of, and the present state-of-the-art of the modern fast-neutron-breeder fission reactor. There are also contributions from experts concerned with the fuel for the reactor and its processing. The environmental and safety questions are discussed together with the economics of the reactor and the book should be of interest to all of those concerned with national electrical power generation - such as researchers in reactor design, atomic energy authorities, and economists interested in nuclear power.

Book Fission Fusion and The Energy Crisis

Download or read book Fission Fusion and The Energy Crisis written by S. E. Hunt and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fission, Fusion and the Energy Crisis, Second Edition focuses on the importance of the breeder reactor to the efficient use of nuclear fuel reserves. This book examines the interrelationships of the scientific, technological, economic, and ecological aspects of nuclear power and considers the debate on the possible danger of a ""plutonium economy."" This monograph is comprised of 12 chapters and opens with a discussion on the energy requirements and available fuel supplies on a global scale, with emphasis on capital fuel reserves and renewable energy sources. An overview of the atom and its nucleus, mass, and energy is then presented. The following chapters explore the process of nuclear fission and how it can be used to produce a hydrogen bomb; natural uranium reactors and enriched reactors; the control and safety of nuclear reactors; and the short- and long-term economics of nuclear power stations. The nuclear power programs of some countries such as Canada, Britain, and the United States are also considered. Finally, the nuclear fusion process and attempts to control it for use in the production of heat and electricity are analyzed. This text is intended for nuclear scientists and undergraduate students.

Book Fission Product Energy Release and Inventory from 239Pu Fast Fission

Download or read book Fission Product Energy Release and Inventory from 239Pu Fast Fission written by M. E. Battat and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By use of currently available experimental and calculated fission productyields from fast fission 239Pu, the fission product code, FPIC, has been expanded to include the capability of calculating fission product decay powers for 239Pu fast fission. The revised code, FPIC/U-Pu, is operational on the CDC-6600 computer. Summation calculations of beta, gamma, and total decay powers from 235U thermal fission and from 239Pu fast fission were compared for both an instantaneous burst and infinite irradiation. Shutdown times ranged from 10 to 109 sec, and significant (>10%) differences occur principally for very shortand very long shutdown times. The decay powers from 235U thermal fission were compared with previous studies for an instantaneous burst and for infinite irradiation, and good agreement was found over the applicable shutdown times. Calcualations of beta, gamma, and total fission product decay powers from 239Pu fast fission for a specific irradiation history were then compared with the corresponding experimental measurements by K. Johnston of AWRE, as well as with 235U thermal fission calculations. For gamma and total decay power, the 239Pu fast fission calculation generally agreed better with the experiment, whereas for beta decay power, the 235U thermal fission calculations were generally better. Similar conclusions were drawn from comparisons of instantaneous burst calculations with the corresponding analytical fits derived from the experimental data.
