Book Fast Algorithms for Structural Analysis Least Squares and Related Computations

Download or read book Fast Algorithms for Structural Analysis Least Squares and Related Computations written by Robert J. Plemmons and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 10 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New fast algorithms for high speed computation on the modern generation of supercomputers is essential. To meet these challenges new techniques are developed in numerical linear algebra and its applications for implementation on these new architectures. Significantly, applications of this work to practical problems of structural analysis and design and to least squares adjustments, estimation and digital filtering are also being investigated. The current objectives in structural analysis are to develop efficient and stable high speed algorithms for the design and analysis of large complex systems. Interest here is in developing stable alternatives to the often ill conditioned stiffness matrix approach to solving problems in elastic analysis and structural dynamics. For example, a comparative study is developed of the performances of seven alternative methods to the stiffness approach on the Alliant FX/8 and Cray X-MP systems. These methods involve various orthogonal factorization approaches as well as preconditioned conjugate gradient methods which completely avoid formation of the stiffness equations.

Download or read book Fast Algorithms for Structural Optimization Least Squares and Other Computations written by R. J. Plemmons and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast algorithms for solving large-scale structural optimization and least squares problems are being investigated. An especially significant aspect of this work is the development and testing of parallel algorithms for alternatives to the often ill-conditioned stiffness equations approach in structural analysis on machines such as the Cray X-MP, the Denelcor HEP and the Intel Hypercube. The principal thrusts in this project on least squares methods have been in developing techniques for the solution of superlarge problems in a stable way, i.e., employing orthogonal factorization techniques, on multiprocessors. These computations involve various levels of parallelism, including domain decomposition as well as pipelining type schemes for orthogonal factorization. Additional keywords: linear algebra; parallel processing. (Author).

Book Structural Optimization and Other Large Scale Processes

Download or read book Structural Optimization and Other Large Scale Processes written by R. J. Plemmons and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 8 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast algorithms for solving numerical problems involving large sparse matrix computations are investigated. Applications of this work to the areas of structural analysis, constrained optimization and large scale least squares adjustment methods are developed. One of the more important accomplishments is the design and testing on the Denelcor HEP multiprocessor of a parallel algorithm for computing a banded basis matrix for the null space. This algorithm may lead to a new efficient sparse matrix implementation of the force method for the finite element analysis of large-scale structures.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: LANDSCAPE GENETICS: CONCEPTS, METHODS, APPLICATIONS LANDSCAPE GENETICS: CONCEPTS, METHODS, APPLICATIONS Edited by Niko Balkenhol, Samuel A. Cushman, Andrew T. Storfer, Lisette P. Waits Landscape genetics is an exciting and rapidly growing field, melding methods and theory from landscape ecology and population genetics to address some of the most challenging and urgent ecological and evolutionary topics of our time. Landscape genetic approaches now enable researchers to study in detail how environmental complexity in space and time affect gene flow, genetic drift, and local adaptation. However, learning about the concepts and methods underlying the field remains challenging due to the highly interdisciplinary nature of the field, which relies on topics that have traditionally been treated separately in classes and textbooks. In this edited volume, some of the leading experts in landscape genetics provide the first comprehensive introduction to underlying concepts, commonly used methods, and current and future applications of landscape genetics. Consistent with the interdisciplinary nature of the field, the book includes textbook-like chapters that synthesize fundamental concepts and methods underlying landscape genetics (Part 1), chapters on advanced topics that deserve a more in-depth treatment (Part 2), and chapters illustrating the use of concepts and methods in empirical applications (Part 3). Aimed at beginning landscape geneticists and experienced researchers alike, this book will be helpful for all scientists and practitioners interested in learning, teaching, and applying landscape genetics.

Book Least Squares Computations in Science and Engineering

Download or read book Least Squares Computations in Science and Engineering written by and published by . This book was released on 1994 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Least squares computations constitute a fundamental tool in science and engineering. The reason is that they play a critical role in fitting numerical models to real world observations. This AFOSR supported research effort has been concerned with the design and testing of new algorithms for least squares computations and optimization in science and engineering. The objectives were to mathematically develop, test, and analyze fast numerical algorithms for the efficient solution to problems on modem high performance computers. The focus of this project was the application of scientific computing technology in the area of signal and image processing. Very many problems lead to over determined systems of linear or nonlinear equations that are often solved by least squares or related optimization methods. Generally, the problems are accompanied by constraints, such as bound constraints, and the observations are corrupted by noise. The project has involved the application of scientific computing in the area of computational linear and nonlinear least squares methods with particular applications in image and signal processing, where recovering images is often an ill-posed inverse problem. Additional work included control computations associated with adaptive optics. Constrained least squares, Adaptive filtering, Adaptive optics, Deconvolution, Image restoration, Parallel algorithms, Trace maximization, Inverse problems, FFT.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 572 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A. Paulraj*, V. Roychowdhury**, and C. Schaper* * Dept. of Electrical Engineering, Stanford University ** Dept. of Electrical Engineering, UCLA Innumerable conferences are held around the world on the subjects of commu nications, computation, control and signal processing, and on their numerous subdisciplines. Therefore one might not envision a coherent conference encom passing all these areas. However, such an event did take place June 22-26, 1995, at an international symposium held at Stanford University to celebrate Professor Thomas Kailath's sixtieth birthday and to honor the notable con tributions made by him and his students and associates. The depth of these contributions was evident from the participation of so many leading figures in each of these fields. Over the five days of the meeting, there were about 200 at tendees, from eighteen countries, more than twenty government and industrial organizations, and various engineering, mathematics and statistics faculties at nearly 50 different academic institutions. They came not only to celebrate but also to learn and to ponder the threads and the connections that Professor Kailath has discovered and woven among so many apparently disparate areas. The organizers received many comments about the richness of the occasion. A distinguished academic wrote of the conference being "the single most rewarding professional event of my life. " The program is summarized in Table 1. 1; a letter of reflections by Dr. C. Rohrs appears a little later.
