Book Challiss of Uppham Norfolk Family Life in the Victorian Era

This book was released on 2012-01-01 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fictional Uppham St Mary is revisited in this light-hearted sequel to The Lime Walk. 1837. Egoist Thomas Henry Challiss graduates from university and celebrates by visiting Newmarket races. Afterwards, while drunk he commits a serious crime. To avoid public disgrace he flees to London's East End where his younger brother Robert manages the family sugar business. Robert has married in haste, is an opium addict and owes his father-in-law the huge sum that has funded it. Thomas Henry returns to Uppham. His widowed father is exhausted by financial worries. Mr Challiss expects his son to share the burden of managing the estate. Thomas Henry makes it clear that it is his ambition to have his own school. He tolerates his three sisters but is initially disgusted to find that his father's bastard son, James, has been installed as one of the family. The precocious boy wins his half-brother's love and respect. Discouraged by the derelict state into which house and land have sunk, young Challiss seeks comfort and diversion in nearby Downham. His ego is further deflated when an older woman spurns his attempts at seduction but he is unaware that she has devised a plan to entrap him. By turns serious, humorous, sad and thought-provoking, Challiss of Uppham is an engaging work of fiction that paints a lively and realistic picture of early Victorian life in a Norfolk village. It will appeal to lovers of historical, romantic fiction and will transport readers from the mundane to the imaginative world glimpsed through the eyes of a four-year-old boy.

Book excerpt: 1815. Almost seventy years earlier, Ralph Challiss acquired the Uppham estate on the turn of a card. Caring for it has brought his son Thomas Challiss to an early death. His grandson George Challiss can’t wait to be rid of it. Born at Uppham in 1795, a penniless ex-guardsman Thomas Roberts, formerly with Wellington’s Army of Alliance, is determined to gain possession of Uppham, where he hopes to create a dynasty with Mary Emma Kay.Set during the economic depression that followed the Battle of Waterloo, The Lime Walk gives a closely observed picture of how the Challisses of Uppham and their neighbours cope with living in turbulent times in an isolated Norfolk village which is threatened by angry, disillusioned bread-rioters.Regency life is clearly portrayed: a privileged few, an endless tide of returning servicemen, massive unemployment, food shortages, the desperation of the homeless and the violent anger of the dishonestly dispossessed. It is a period minus the comforts, technological advantages and modern welfare system available to the majority of Britons in the twenty-first century.Readers who enjoy a palatable approach to social history painted with a light touch, who relish an absorbing story and prefer their history sweetened with more than a dash of romance will love The Lime Walk.

Download or read book Parisian Fields written by Michael Sheringham and published by Reaktion Books. This book was released on 1996 with total page 214 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps no world city has so many resonances, on so many levels, as Paris. Cafe society, demi-monde, the intellectual life, film-makers and writers... Paris has fragmented socially, sexually, intellectually and linguistically into many fields. Parisian Fields sets out to investigate some of these. The writers investigate how Paris has been both seen and shaped by tourist guides; how its topography has been represented and allegorized by film-makers like Godard, Clair, Vigo and Renoir; how the city has responded to "new" Parisians - for example Afro-American musicians and dancers such as Josephine Baker - and to previously marginalized Parisians - gays and women. Literary analysis, film, social and gender theory, perspectives on urbanism; here are many provocative and innovative views of the open field of Paris, which will appeal to anyone interested in French cultural and literary studies - or just in the City of Light herself. With essays by Roger Clark, Nicholas Hewitt, Jon Kear, Tom Conley, Michael Sheringham, Alex Hughes, Adrian Rifkin, Belinda Jack, Verena Andermatt Conley and Marc Augé.
