Book excerpt: Life is good for Farnor Yarrance. It is good for everybody in the valley. And has been for generations. So much so, that few ever feel the need to travel beyond it -- over the hill. And no one ever bothers to enter it from beyond. Until one day, they do. Men come from the south, haunted and pursued. And something else comes, silent and awful, from the north. With their arrival, an ancient corruption, festering slowly in the midst of the community, blossoms into a menace that threatens not only the valley but the land beyond, and the lands beyond that. Only Farnor, scarcely a man yet, has the power to oppose this menace, though he is unaware of it, his own soul clouded with bitterness and anger at the terrible tragedy that events now inflict on him. Not until he is pursued into the Great Forest to the north does he gradually learn the extent of his own power. And the truly terrifying nature of the forces he must face...

The dark lord Sumeral is dead -- His mortal body destroyed and His will scattered some sixteen or so years ago. Now, travellers sent to learn more of the world beyond Orthlund, Fyorlund and Riddin are returning. They bring with them people in need of help and with disturbing tales to tell -- Antyr, the Dream Finder; Farnor, to whom the great forest can speak; Vredech, the once preaching brother; Pinnatte, victim of a fearful experiment by the Kyrosdyn; and Thyrn, the Caddoran. Their disparate stories come together to yield a terrifying revelation -- somewhere, Sumeral is whole again and struggling to return. But other, even darker threads are being drawn together. Andawyr and the Cadwanol, in their relentless search for truth, have touched on a threat to their world more terrible than Sumeral. More terrible by far...

Book excerpt: A.D. 3597 Descendants of those who fled our galaxy during the great Xathen Civil War have returned, bearing the Message and Blessing of the Grand Designer. All who receive His Message will believe, and all will become One. Taylor and her daughters are presumed dead after the attack on Strathow. Oxim-four has fallen. The entire Oxim system has been cut off from the rest of the Xathen Dominion, but far too late to prevent the Blessing’s relentless spread. It’s only a matter of time until Xathen everywhere succumb to the Blessing and all that it entails, including vastly-shortened life-spans and the inability to Ascend to cheat death. When Taylor learns the galaxy-shattering truth behind the Blessing and how they might stop it, she is faced with an impossible choice: Should she save the civilization that tried to kill her family and the entire Orion Spur, including Earth? Or should she embrace the Returning Xathen who took her family in, and let the Blessing take its course? Read the thrilling conclusion to The Taylor Neeran Chronicles.
Download or read book Cemeteries of Unicoi Country written by Unicoi County Historical Society and published by The Overmountain Press. This book was released on 1992-08 with total page 460 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This labor of love began as one of the first major projects of the newly-formed Unicoi County Historical Society in the early 1970s. By 1973, about 35 cemeteries, all in the northern part of the county, had been copied. Fifteen years went by, and then, in the winter of 1987–1988, a new committee was formed and the project was begun again. The committee found that in 1960, 15 cemeteries, mostly in the southern part of the county, had been copied, adding up to a total of 50 cemeteries that had been recorded. Final copying began in April 1988 and was completed a little over a year later. The total of 166 copied included an update of the 50 cemeteries done earlier.

Book excerpt: A.D. 3596 While Xathen are of many body-forms, they are all Xathen, one and united. However, a billion years ago the Xathen fought each other in the bloodiest civil war the galaxy has ever seen. Trillions died and hundreds of star systems were extinguished as battles raged all across the Milky Way. They fought not over race or body-form, but over a single ideal: Thou Shalt Not Interfere. The losers fled the galaxy entirely, cast out into the great dark between the stars. The winners were left to play as gods with the Orion Spur, fostering one cluster of new intelligences after another, wiping them out, then starting again. We are the result of their toils. Now those who had fled have returned. They call themselves the True Xathen.

Download or read book Erwin and Unicoi County written by Linda Davis March and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2007 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The 250-year pioneer heritage of Erwin and Unicoi County is an intrinsic part of East Tennessee's historical landscape. By the early 1700s, the legendary Long Hunters had ventured into this wild frontier--then part of North Carolina--following the abundant game and trade with the Native Americans. This river-fed land was soon dubbed "Greasy Cove" as a meeting place where game was cleaned. Around 1760, settlers found their way into the valley, carving homesteads out of hidden coves or fertile flatlands alongside the Nolichucky River. Unicoi County was established in 1875. The advent of the railroad in 1890 brought a new prosperity. By 1909, the Carolina, Clinchfield, and Ohio Railroad--later known as the "Clinchfield"--was in its boomtime, as was Unicoi County. Around 1916, the Ohiobased Southern Potteries arrived, and famed Blue Ridge hand-painted china dinnerware was born. Today, sheltered on three sides by the natural beauty of Cherokee National Forest, the area of Erwin and Unicoi County is popularly known as the Valley Beautiful.

Download or read book Buddha s Words for Tough Times written by Peter Skilling and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2024-02-20 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Twenty translations from the vast corpus of Buddhist literature come alive in this full-color anthology of ancient wisdom for turbulent times, as a master scholar uncovers their sources and significance. Change and loss have always been part of the human condition, but in today’s world, the pace and intensity of uncertainty has reached new extremes. The Buddha observed the truth of impermanence more than 2,500 years ago and diagnosed the source of the anxiety it engenders so incisively that his prescription still resonates and heals here and now. In Buddha’s Words for Tough Times, Peter Skilling, one of the world’s foremost authorities on Buddhist scripture, brings the reader face to face with the wealth of Buddhist literature, from a teaching in a single word, to a seminal collection of verses on impermanence, to narrations of the Buddha’s teaching journeys across the Gangetic Plain. Translating from sources in Tibetan, Sanskrit, and Pali, he uncovers the complex history of the vast writings of the Buddhist canons, and his skill in revealing the meaning of twenty gems from within those riches brings them alive for English readers. We could have no better guide for this exploration, an exploration whose value is more urgent than ever.
Download or read book The Suttanipata written by Bodhi and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2017-09-26 with total page 1616 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This landmark volume in the Teachings of the Buddha series translates the Suttanipata, a text that matches the Dhammapada in its concise power and its centrality to the Buddhist tradition. Celebrated translator Bhikkhu Bodhi illuminates this text and its classical commentaries with elegant renderings and authoritative annotations. The Suttanipata, or “Group of Discourses” is a collection of discourses ascribed to the Buddha that includes some of the most popular suttas of the Pali Canon, among them the Discourse on Loving-Kindness Sutta. The suttas are primarily in verse, though several are in mixed prose and verse. The Suttanipata contains discourses that extol the figure of the muni, the illumined sage, who wanders homeless completely detached from the world. Other suttas, such as the Discourse on Downfall and the Discourse on Blessings, establish the foundations of Buddhist lay ethics. The last two chapters—the Atthakavagga (Chapter of Octads) and the Parayanavagga (The Way to the Beyond)—are considered to be among the most ancient parts of the Pali Canon. The Atthakavagga advocates a critical attitude toward views and doctrines. The Parayanavagga is a beautiful poem in which sixteen spiritual seekers travel across India to meet the Buddha and ask him profound questions pertaining to the highest goal. The commentary, the Paramatthajotika, relates the background story to each sutta and explains each verse in detail. The volume includes numerous excerpts from the Niddesa, an ancient commentary already included in the Pali Canon, which offers detailed expositions of each verse in the Atthakavagga, the Parayanavagga, and the Rhinoceros Horn Sutta. Translator Bhikkhu Bodhi provides an insightful, in-depth introduction, a guide to the individual suttas, extensive notes, a list of parallels to the discourses of the Suttanipata, and a list of the numerical sets mentioned in the commentaries.
