Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farmington in the War of the Revolution: An Historical Address Delivered at the Annual Meeting of the Village Library Company of Farmington, May 3, 1893 Their solemn charters were annulled, authority to elect their principal officers was denied them, and the right to assemble in town meeting abolished. Repeatedly his Majesty asked, in a long list of questions submitted to the General Assembly of Connecticut, where his dutiful sub; jects bought and sold, and what they presumed to manu facture, and repeatedly he was shrewdly answered. 80 long as diplomacy and downright, wholesale smuggling availed, the crisis was averted, but when the wants of the British treasury, and especially of the East India Com pany, demanded a rigorous enforcement of the laws, the situation became intolerable. To all this was added the threat of vigorous government by lords spiritual as wellas lords temporal, from which they had once for all escaped. Book A History of Farmington Franklin County Maine

Download or read book A History of Farmington Franklin County Maine written by Francis Gould Butler and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-05 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Farmington, Franklin County, Maine: From the Earliest Explorations to the Present Time, 1776-1885 A people justly proud of their ancestors, as are the descendant of the Puritan Fathers of New England, take a lively interest in studying and in transmitting to posterity whatever of history pertains to their town or family. Farmington is undoubtedly one of the best agricultural towns in the State, and when we consider the extent of its geographical area, the fertility of its soil, its varied mechanical industries, its mercantile and professional pursuits, and also consider the fact that it has been the shire town of the County of Franklin for almost half a century, none will deny that such a town has a history, and that it should be preserved. The pioneers who came to found a home for themselves and their families were generally without pecuniary means. Mere hangers-on were not tolerated, nor did they find a welcome among the early settlers. Many of these pioneers had seen hard service in the French and Indian and Revolutionary Wars, had been inured to hardship, toil, and poverty, and fully realized the blessings of home and its comforts. They were generally men in the prime of manhoods strength, and with vigorous blows leveled the forests and brought under cultivation a virgin soil, the fruits of which furnished abundant sustenance for all. Amid the curling smoke and dying flame they erected their log-cabins and hovels, and thither conducted in triumph through the wilderness their wives and children. Book excerpt: How ordinary people went from resistance to revolution: "[A] concise, lively narrative . . . the authors expertly build tension." --Publishers Weekly Americans know about the Boston Tea Party and "the shot heard 'round the world," but sixteen months divided these two iconic events, a period that has nearly been lost to history. The Spirit of '74 fills in this gap in our nation's founding narrative, showing how in these mislaid months, step by step, real people made a revolution. After the Tea Party, Parliament not only shut down a port but also revoked the sacred Massachusetts charter. Completely disenfranchised, citizens rose up as a body and cast off British rule everywhere except in Boston, where British forces were stationed. A "Spirit of '74" initiated the American Revolution, much as the better-known "Spirit of '76" sparked independence. Redcoats marched on Lexington and Concord to take back a lost province, but they encountered Massachusetts militiamen who had trained for months to protect the revolution they had already made. The Spirit of '74 places our founding moment in a rich new historical context, both changing and deepening its meaning for all Americans.

Book Simsbury s Part in the War of the American Revolution Classic Reprint

Download or read book Simsbury s Part in the War of the American Revolution Classic Reprint written by Charles. E. Stowe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-11-17 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Simsbury's Part in the War of the American Revolution The Simsbury of Revolutionary days was larger than the Simsbury of to-day by the area of the towns of Granby, East Granby, Bloomfield, and a part of the town of Canton. The original boundaries of the town were from the Farmington boundary north ten miles, and from the Windsor boundary west ten miles. There is in existence a map of the town which was made out not far from the year 1730. The main road leading from Avon north to Salmon brook, together with the roads running easterly, appear very much as at present. The total number of houses given on this map is one hundred and sixty-two. Fifty-eight of these are within the limits of Granby as at present defined, and one hundred and four within the present limits of Sims bury. Now supposing that we allow ten persons to a house, which certainly is not a large estimate for that time of large families, the population of the town in1730 could not have been far from sixteen or seventeen hundred persons. They were all of English blood; children of the Magna Charta, and the Puritan England of Hampden and Cromwell. They were inured to every conceivable hardship and danger by years of conflict with savage nature and no less savage men. Far from kings' courts and standing armies and popes and bishops they had learned to govern both church and state according to the will of the majority. They were desperate fighters, sternly religious and moral, good organizers, and inde pendent thinkers. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
