Formally organized on January 15, 1818, the county was named after Alexander Macomb Jr., a Detroit-born veteran of the War of 1812 who distinguished himself in the Battle of Plattsburg. From the early days of the county's founding, when the government started selling parcels to settlers, the land was primarily used for farming. Truck farming was--and continues to be--greatly important to the farming communities in Macomb County, as crops have long been taken down to Detroit's Eastern Market to be sold every Saturday morning. Despite significant land development, which started in the 1970s at the boundary line of Hall Road and steadily moved north over time, Macomb County's agricultural heritage is still evident today, with a large percent of landmass remaining in farms.

Book excerpt: In 1968, farm-centered Sterling Township was busy turning into the bustling suburban city of Sterling Heights, Michigan. The city charter had just been forged, and new residents were flooding into this Macomb County area just north of Detroit to work in the Ford, Chrysler, defense, and auto supplier plants. The city grew at an astounding rate, quadrupling in population between 1960 and 1970. More services were offered, and more homes were built. Commerce and industry continued to grow, resulting in a population of 130,000 by 2010 in what is now the fourth-largest city in Michigan. Time for play brings to mind the jewels of the city: its many lush parks, some located along the beautiful Clinton River, and Sterlingfest, the annual summer city event focusing on art, music, food, and fun. The city's ethnic makeup continues to be fluid, as it has all through its history. The celebration of Sterling Heights' 50th anniversary in 2018 will see a city continuing to grow and evolve.

Book excerpt: Applegate: Freedom of the Press in a Small Town is a slice of Americana as told by Armada Times Editor James Mitchell, along with Lindsey Kingston, student editor of the paper's high school section. Mitchell took over as editor of the Times in the wake of a lawsuit that had been filed by its publisher against the local school board, initiating one of the many First Amendment battles that would be waged during his two-year tenure. While the content of most rural weeklies typically runs to favorite recipes and homecoming game reports, the Times would open up a forum on issues including gay rights and gun control. Mitchell is applauded by many, particularly for involving high school students as both writers and readers of the local newspaper. Others, however, took exception to the new direction, often with a claim that "you can't print that!" Applegate offers a behind the scenes look at the politics and personalities of a small town and its newspaper. The editor's belief in a community is echoed by the conviction that a newspaper can, indeed, print that.
