Book Barley

    Book Details:
  • Author : Dennis Edward Briggs
  • Publisher : Springer
  • Release : 1978-07-13
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 640 pages

Download or read book Barley written by Dennis Edward Briggs and published by Springer. This book was released on 1978-07-13 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book was written to provide an integrated account of barley, induding its cultivation, nature and uses. An attempt has been made to cut across the unjustified and obstructive divisions between pure science, applied science, technology, botany, biochemistry, agronomy, and so on. Limitations of space preclude the use of more illustrative material or references, or even complete accounts of various topics. However sufficient information is given to enable the reader to understand the general principles and to find his or her way readily into the literature to obtain further information. Emphasis has been placed on general principles rather than details. In becoming familiar with the literature one becomes acquainted with the effects of the cereal or religion, the English language and the development of agriculture and biochemistry. The comparison between 'parallel literatures' is often stimulating also. For example one is forced to conclude that many of the agricultural problems of poor 'seed vigour' would be overcome if seedsmen used the maltsters techniques for breaking dormancy and speeding 'post-harvest maturation'. Barley is the world's fourth most important cereal after wheat, rice, and maize. It is the most widely cultivated, being grown from the equator to 700N (Scandinavia), from the humid regions of Europe and Japan to the Saharan and Asiatic Oases, and from below sea level in Palestine to high up mountains in the Himalayas, E. Africa and S. America. Some where in the world it is being sown or harvested at every time of the year.

Book Crop Physiology

Download or read book Crop Physiology written by Victor Sadras and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2014-09-17 with total page 566 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: From climate change to farming systems to genetic modification of organisms, Crop Physiology, Second Edition provides a practical tool for understanding the relationships and challenges of successful cropping. With a focus on genetic improvement and agronomy, this book addresses the challenges of environmentally sound production of bulk and quality food, fodder, fiber, and energy which are of ongoing international concern. The second edition of Crop Physiology continues to provide a unique analysis of these topics while reflecting important changes and advances in the relevant science and implementation systems. Contemporary agriculture confronts the challenge of increasing demand in terms of quantitative and qualitative production targets. These targets have to be achieved against the background of soil and water scarcity, worldwide and regional shifts in the patterns of land use driven by both climate change and the need to develop crop-based sources of energy, and the environmental and social aspects of agricultural sustainability. - Provides a view of crop physiology as an active source of methods, theories, ideas, and tools for application in genetic improvement and agronomy - Written by leading scientists from around the world - Combines environment-specific cropping systems and general principles of crop science to appeal to advanced students, and scientists in agriculture-related disciplines, from molecular sciences to natural resources management

Book Growth Yield and Nitrogen Utilization of Barley

Download or read book Growth Yield and Nitrogen Utilization of Barley written by Md Zahangir Alam and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-02 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Production of barley is affected by many factors: sowing, topography, fertilization, temperature flux etc. Among them temperature plays an important role in plant growth and development. Due to high temperature, vegetative phase shortened and steep rise in temperature at the grain filling stage which causes abortion of florets and reduced kernel weight. Most of the characters were highest in early sown (S1 and S2) and higher nitrogen (N4). Grain filling duration from anthesis to physiological maturity was shortened by 1.37 and 1.77 day / C rise in temperature, grain weight decreased by 0.18 and 0.82 mg/ C rise in temperature and grain weight increased by 0.30 and 0.07 mg/day increase in grain filling duration in two consecutive years. Fertile tillers/plant, panicle length, number of spikelet/spike, 1000-grain weight and grain protein contents were proved to be the most stable yield components. Nitrogen utilization was also higher in early sowing and higher nitrogen concentration. NUE increased significantly up to N2 but NHI increased significantly up to N1. Experimental findings will help the barley growers and researchers to intensify their knowledge of proper crop management.
