Agricultural modernization has since long been introduced in the tribal areas of West Bengal, primarily with a view to raise the level of income, standard of living and lifestyle of the tribal people. The present book meant for elucidating the impact as well as adoption of modernization on tribal agriculture. The author has made a critical review of the agricultural modernization and mechanization and also the tradition of tribal agriculture. The author studied empirically the extent and nature of adoption of modern agricultural technology by the Santals and subsequently its impact on the lifestyle of the people in the locality. The obstacles or social-cultural constraints of the Santals towards the adoption of the modern agricultural technology have also been taken into consideration. Social, cultural and economic problems of the Santals have also been studied in connection with the agricultural modernization. The author estimated the maximum return over variable cost from existing cropping pattern followed by the Santals and suggested some appropriate measures to maximize net return by adopting alternative systems of cropping pattern. A close probe has also been made to evaluate the extent and nature of socio-cultural and socio-economic changes among the Santal cultivators due to agricultural modernization. The book would be of much use to the social scientists, researchers, students, planners and policy makers in the field of rural development. Book excerpt: "The Long Road to Modernization: Transforming Agriculture in Nova Scotia, 1867-1960" examines Nova Scotia’s agricultural economy, focusing particularly on the role of the provincial state and its allies in the struggle to ensure farming adapted to the challenges of the modern era. In the late nineteenth century, in response to a precipitous decline in farming brought on by industrialization, Halifax began investing heavily, both in money and human resources, to create an agricultural sector that was scientific, efficient, productive, and market oriented. It promoted agricultural co-operatives, established the Nova Scotia Agricultural College at Truro, and sponsored the Nova Scotia Farmers’ Association and the Women’s Institute of Nova Scotia, organizations that shared the government’s agenda for educating farm people in agricultural modernization. Moulding agriculture to modern economic practices engaged people from the premier to farm families. Whereas state-aided modernization of the fishery and forestry sectors took place largely in the wake of the Second World War, agricultural modernization began in earnest in the 1880s and reached full maturation in the years that followed 1945. The state deemed agriculture a fundamental sector of the provincial economy, and invested heavily in its improvement, consistent with long standing efforts to improve the provincial economy. Their efforts were not only economic, but were also geared towards preserving a viable rural society based around farming. Farming and rural life were viewed as the bulwark of a society’s democratic traditions, and the guardians of its customs, culture and morals. The perceived threat industrial modernity posed to farmers in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries prompted an aggressive state effort to help the farmers adapt to the new environment. Examining this effort and the ideology that underwrote it provides a window to reveal the larger social transformations being wrought through the advent of modernity shaped by industrial capitalism and urbanization. The rise of government as a more proactive economic force, the coalescence of liberalism as the dominant economic and political ideology, and the expansion of educational infrastructure all shaped the course of modernity in Nova Scotia Agriculture. We can also view a hitherto unappreciated facet of the myriad state efforts to boost Nova Scotia’s long struggling economy, promoting modern farming. The primary story of this study is the struggle of government to assist farmers in adapting their age-old craft, one laden with tacit knowledge, folk traditions, and family sustenance to the modern age. Unfortunately, only those farmers who commanded sufficient capital and resources to bear the financial burden of modern farming could survive.

More than ten experts were invited in reviewing, giving suggestions for revision and at last selecting the papers. On that account, we would like to forward our appreciation and our gratefulness to such invited experts for having done the process. The committee received more than 180 papers from the participants and based on the results of the review, only 141 papers were declared fit to be presented at the seminar and subsequently published in the proceedings of BASA#3-2019 Papers in the proceeding are expected to give academic benefits, especially in broadening the horizon of our understanding in language, literature, and local culture studies. Book excerpt: This book emanated from the research outputs of different authors whose diverse academic traditions and wide geographic spread play a major role in enriching its contents. The volume is mainly a compilation on smallholder farmers and their practices. The book also highlights the challenges, which that small farmers frequently encounter, and the opportunities or prospects, which abound in their farming operations. Compartmentalised into three major sections, this 11-chapter volume provides an account of thought-provoking scenarios and narratives, which are rich and well- suited for policy development and praxis. The book, therefore, compels policymakers to see opportunities in every challenge associated with smallholder agriculture rather than see challenges in every opportunity therein. While some of the chapters present the results of field experimentations that highlight the impacts of certain geographic features and fertilizer use on root tuber cultivars' production, some explore the effect of climate change on smallholder farming practices and how small farmers counteract the vagaries of weather conditions, which might impede their livelihoods. Nonetheless, most of the chapters largely rely on sociological methodologies to identify pertinent issues affecting the smallholder agriculture. While some of the issues underscore the advocacy for organic farming and its associated benefits or opportunities, others emphasize the uniqueness of certain agro-ecological farming systems and the opportunities, which they might offer resource-poor, smallholder farmers. A number of the chapters specifically provide some historical perspectives on the political economy of smallholder agriculture and identify the motivating and demotivating factors influencing young farmers' affection for farming while some accentuate the pertinent role of research in determining small farmers' response to the adoption of improved biotechnology in achieving food security. In the context of this book, there is a convergence in the findings and viewpoints of the authors in many places regarding topical issues on environmental sustainability, mitigation of climate change, ethics of the agri-food systems and agricultural policy.

In fact, this was something that southern secessionists actively debated. Imagining themselves as nation builders, they understood the importance of a plan for the economic structure of the Confederacy. The traditional view assumes that Confederate slave-based agrarianism went hand in hand with a natural hostility toward industry and commerce. Turning conventional wisdom on its head, John Majewski's analysis finds that secessionists strongly believed in industrial development and state-led modernization. They blamed the South's lack of development on Union policies of discriminatory taxes on southern commerce and unfair subsidies for northern industry. Majewski argues that Confederates' opposition to a strong central government was politically tied to their struggle against northern legislative dominance. Once the Confederacy was formed, those who had advocated states' rights in the national legislature in order to defend against northern political dominance quickly came to support centralized power and a strong executive for war making and nation building.
