Book Sustaining the Soil

Download or read book Sustaining the Soil written by Chris Reij and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-19 with total page 289 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous soil and water conservation practices are rarely acknowledged in the design of conventional development projects. Instead, the history of soil and water conservation in Africa has been one of imposing external solutions without regard for local practice. There is a remarkably diverse range of locally developed and adapted technologies for the conservation of water and soil, well suited to their particular site and socio-economic conditions. But such measures have been ignored, and sometimes even overturned, by external solutions. Sustaining the Soil documents farmers' practices, exploring the origins and adaptations carried out by farmers over generations, in response to changing circumstances. Through a comparative analysis of conservation measures - from the humid zones of West Africa to the arid lands of the Sudan, from rock terraces in Morocco to the grass strips of Swaziland - the book explores the various factors that influence adoption and adaptation; farmers' perceptions of conservation needs; and the institutional and policy settings most favorable to more effective land husbandry. For the first time on an Africa-wide scale, this book shows that indigenous techniques work, and are being used successfully to conserve and harvest soil and water. These insights combine to suggest new ways forward for governments and agencies attempting to support sustainable land management in Africa, involving a fusion of traditional and modern approaches, which makes the most of both the new and the old.

Book Public Private Partnership for Desertification Control in Inner Mongolia

Download or read book Public Private Partnership for Desertification Control in Inner Mongolia written by Zhongju Meng and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-14 with total page 237 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In terms of China’s current situation, the prevention and control of land degradation and the development of innovative sustainable land management activities lie within the purview of public works. Further, public-private partnerships (PPPs) hold considerable potential for application in this field. Inner Mongolia is one of the Chinese provinces hardest hit by land degradation. Fortunately, after years of dedicated efforts, meaningful achievements have been made: the increasing participation of the people as a whole, combined with growing investments in land degradation prevention and ecological construction on the part of private enterprises, has to some extent compensated for the lack of government involvement. Further, Inner Mongolia has been a pioneer in the use of PPPs for the prevention and control of land degradation, which has yielded numerous ecological, social and economic benefits. To better promote the development of ecological construction and expand the participation in land degradation control, this book systematically studies the use of PPPs in the Inner Mongolia autonomous region, drawing on field investigations and case analyses to do so. Its main goal is to explore a public-private partnership model that can effectively expand the scale of investment in land degradation prevention and sustainable land management.

Book Forest coversion soil degradation farmers perception nexus Implications for sustainable land use in the southwest of Ethiopia

Download or read book Forest coversion soil degradation farmers perception nexus Implications for sustainable land use in the southwest of Ethiopia written by and published by Cuvillier Verlag. This book was released on 2005-06-08 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Forest conversion - soil degradation - farmers’ perception nexus: Implications for sustainable land use in the southwest of Ethiopia. Resettlements in the forest regions instigate considerable impacts on the natural resource base. This study presents a comparative assessment of the biophysical processes of resource degradation and the farmers’ awareness in a cereal-based farming system of the settlers and an indigenous coffee-based farming system. The study analyzes the extent of forest conversion and soil degradation in the two farming systems. Furthermore, the farmers’ response and coping mechanisms are assessed. The need for providing land management technologies to farmers to use their resources sustainably is emphasized and a review of the resettlement policy is underlined.

Book Ecological and Socio economic Impacts of Physical Soil and Water Conservation Practices

Download or read book Ecological and Socio economic Impacts of Physical Soil and Water Conservation Practices written by Dessalegne Chanie and published by . This book was released on 2020-11-27 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2020 in the subject Geography / Earth Science - Physical Geography, Geomorphology, Environmental Studies, language: English, abstract: Physical soil and water conservation technologies including soil and stone bunds, cut-off drains and ditches/waterways were implemented in different place of Ethiopia particularly in the north and North West parts to minimize soil degradation. Regarding to this many research findings investigated the rate of soil erosion, the type of technologies adopted to reduce soil erosion and their effects on agricultural production. However their ecological and socio- economic impacts (particularly ecological impacts) were not highly investigated. Therefore this study was conducted at Gondar Zuria Woreda Northwest Ethiopia to investigate ecological and socio-economic impacts of physical SWC technologies. For this purpose both quantitative and qualitative designs were employed. A multistage sampling approach was used to identify the research subjects. Quantitative and qualitative data were collected via structured questionnaire, semi-structured key informant interview, FGDs and through field observations. The findings were analyzed with the help of descriptive and inferential statically tools. Land sat satellite image with Arc-GIS was employed to analyze the bio-physical dynamics of the study areas. Ten major factors those estimated as obstacles to implement physical soil and water conservation technologies in the study areas such as size of land; money; households labor; farmers knowledge (training); land tenure, farmers perception, sex, time and culture constraints were determined using logit regression model. Owing to this, the finding indicated that farm households who implemented each of (all) the newly installed physical SWC technologies were significantly greater than who did not implemented each of (all) technologies.

Book Adoption and Use of Improved Soil Conservation Technologies

Download or read book Adoption and Use of Improved Soil Conservation Technologies written by Brkalem Shewatatek Hailu and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-04 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil degradation in the highlands of Ethiopia, owing mainly to poor land management and high population density, is a serious problem that threatens the sustainability of agriculture. The study area is characterized by high population density, small land holding and severe soil erosion and increasing expansion of crop land to agriculturally marginal areas. Consequently the people are unable to produce enough food. Although many efforts have been made to develop and promote several soil and water conservation technologies, their adoption has not been widespread. Based on the findings of this study effort should be made to understand the various personal, socio-economic, institutional and bio-physical factors that determine farmers' decision on adoption and sustainable use of improved soil and water conservation technologies. Lack of appreciation and integration of indigenous knowledge of the farmers has also brought the ultimate failures and misuse of funds. Moreover, econometric model developed in this study can lay the foundation for predicting the level of effects of the major adoption determinant factors and can be superimposed in undertaking similar studies.

Book Adoption of Soil and Water Conservation Practices among Smallholder Farmers The Case of Meskan Woreda

Download or read book Adoption of Soil and Water Conservation Practices among Smallholder Farmers The Case of Meskan Woreda written by Eskinder Mengesha and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2022-08-31 with total page 81 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Master's Thesis from the year 2018 in the subject Environmental Sciences, grade: 3.99, , language: English, abstract: The objectives of the research were (1) to assess level of use of soil conservation measures by small holder farmers, (2) to identify the factors that influence small holder farmers to participate in soil conservation activities and (3) to identify most commonly used indigenous and improved soil conservation techniques. Multistage sampling procedure was employed for the realization of the research objectives. In the first stage the research area was selected purposively for geographic and economic advantage convenience. In the second stage three sample kebeles were selected by stratifying based on agro ecology then purposively in consideration of their accesability. In the third stage a total of 150 sample respondents were selected by simple random sampling based on PPS. Structured interview schedule was developed, pre-tested and used for collecting the essential data for the study from the sampled households. Focus group discussions and key informant interviews were also conducted to generate qualitative. Descriptive statistics was used to describe the nature of data by indicating the significance of the relationship between dependent variable and independent variable. Binary logit model was used to determine the relative influence of independent variables on the dependent variable. The result of descriptive statistics revealed that out of the total sample respondents 63.3% were adopters and 36.7% of them were non-adopters. It also indicated that in the study area, livestock holding, family size, education, age, participation in training of soil and water conservation, farm income, social position, Number of economically active labor, land size, frequency of extension contact, perception of ownership of land and slope were found to be significantly affecting adoption of soil and water conservation technology by farmers. The model result revealed that education of head of household, farm income of the household, frequency of extension contact, number of economically active labour in the household and perception on ownership of land were found positively and significantly affect adoption of soil and water conservation structures. While sex of head of household and age of head of household were negatively and significantly related with adoption of soil and water conservation technology by farmers. Thus, consideration of those variables would help to improve adoption of physical soil and water conservation technology among farm households.
