Download or read book Farmers Cyclopedia Vol 7 of 7 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 778 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farmers' Cyclopedia, Vol. 7 of 7: Abridged Agricultural Records, From the Publications of the United States Department of Agriculture and the Experiment Stations; Farming Methods, Soils, Fertilizers, Irrigation, Rotation, Buildings, Farmer's Home and Education, Index Buildings - The buildings should be constructed from the point of view of economy in expense and time and for convenience in use. The horse and cow barns should be so located as to rove economical of time in getting' to the fields. The wagon shed s ould be so con structed that the teams may be driven through the shed, saving time and labor in ulling or pushing the wagons into place. Farm P ans - It is often said that a farm can not be planned as other kinds of business are; that the vicissitudes of weather, the visitations of insect pests or plant diseases, the low fprices that may prevail when the farmer has to sell, and other nu oreseen circum stances may interfere to make all farm plans almost worthless from a practical standpoint. This is Often quite true with reference to plans made for a particular year. But when the plans are based on average conditions for a long series of years, then the objections do not hold. For while it cannot be told what may hap en during any particular season, it can be foretold with considerable accuracy what the average conditions will be over a series, say, of ten years. Plans for the farm must represent and be based on average condi tions and not on single years. The farm plan must be made for a period of years and not for a single year. In replanning a farm it is essential that a few fundamental points in farming be kept constantly in mind: (1) The plan should provide a reasonable reward for the labor and capital invested. (2) The fertility of the farm should be maintained or increased. (3) The plan must be suited to the capabilities of the owner for carrying it out. There are within the United States alone no less than 60 native species of clover, 70 of blue grasses, 25 of gramas and curly mesquite grasses which have produced more beef and mutton than all the cultivated hay grasses put together, 90 lupines, 20 wild beans, 40 vetches and an equal number of forage beggar weeds, 20 kinds of wild rye, 30 kinds of brome grasses, besides meadow, pasture, woodland and swamp grasses without number, each kind adapted to a particular soil or climate {ind to some special use. Among the leading grasses are the fol ow1ng: Timothy - This grass, botanically known as Phleum pratense, is supposed to have been introduced from Europe, but the earliest account of its culture is that given by Jared Elliot (special Bul. U. S. Dept. Agr. Who says it was found b a Mr. Timothy Herd in a swamp in New Hampshire, and that he began its cultivation. As it was found to be a valuable grass, its cultivation soon spread, and it was originally known as Herd's grass. It was not introduced into cultivation in England until some fifty years later. It is very prob able that the specimens found by Mr. Herd were of native growth, for it is believed to be native in the White Mountains, in the Rocky Mountains, in Alaska and in Labrador. It is also a native of Europe. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2016-09-17 with total page 670 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farmer's Cyclopedia, Vol. 5 of 7: Abridged Agricultural Records; Fruits, Forests, Flowers, Cotton, Tobacco, Sugar Beets, Sugar Cane, Etc The great variety of fruits grown within the limits of the United States and the wide range in requirements for both soil and climate exhibited by the different varieties of the various species of fruit-pro ducing plants render the characterization of any particular soil or of any class or group of soils as special fruit soils impossible. In general it may be stated that all soils to be well adapted to the production of the majority of deciduous tree fruits must be characterized by good natural drainage; by level or rolling topography, not precipitous; by a considerable depth of surface soil and subsoil and by relative freedom from large stone or bowlders which might interfere with cultivation. When these inherent properties are present there are necessary also certain conditions of protection or exposure, of altitude and latitude, and Of accessibility in order to render advisable the selection of any particular field for extended fruit culture.
