Book Farmer Research Groups

Download or read book Farmer Research Groups written by Dawit Alemu and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It has long been recognized that agricultural research should involve the farmers themselves. Participatory agricultural research methods have been developed to help farmers and researchers to identify the most appropriate technologies and techniques for a particular area. However, mainstreaming this collaborative approach within government research institutions and extension services has lagged behind. This book describes the Farmers Research Group (FRG) approachby which a multi-disciplinary research team, extension workers and groups of farmers jointly conduct research on selected topics based on farmers' needs, on farmers' fields. It also documents the process of institutionalizing the approach within the Ethiopian Agricultural Research Systems including universities.Farmer Research Groups reviews the history of participatory agricultural research, particularly in Ethiopia. It introduces cases of research conducted by FRGs in Ethiopia - both successful and less successful - and describes how issues of research quality, technology dissemination, effectiveness and efficiency are dealt with. Finally, it summarizes the lessons learned and indicates how participatory agricultural research might be applied in sub-Sahara Africa. This book is essential reading for agricultural researchers, extension workers and agricultural policy makers in government departments, universities, research institutions and NGOs, as well as students and lecturers studying participatory methodologies.

Book Participatory Research in Health

Download or read book Participatory Research in Health written by Korrie de Koning and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participatory research (PR) has already gained considerable importance both as a research strategy and as an educational process in recent years. This volume breaks new ground by presenting the experience and reflections of academics and practitioners, from both North and South, who are using this approach in the field of health. Contributors place PR in its historical and theoretical context. They examine issues of training and practice, drawing on experiences from Africa, Asia, Latin America, the USA and Europe. The case studies make clear the complexities and contradictions, as well as common experiences, which practitioners confront in diverse social, economic and political contexts. Questions of equity in terms of gender, race and class come to the fore, as do insights into the qualities, skills and attititudes required of practitioners. Participatory Rural Appraisal (PRA) methods are described in a number of case studies with particular stress being laid on ethical considerations, reliability of the results, and how to integrate PRA methods into a participatory research process.

Book Study on impacts of farmer led research supported by civil society organizations

Download or read book Study on impacts of farmer led research supported by civil society organizations written by Wettasinha, C. and published by WorldFish. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ÿDecades of scientific research related to agriculture and natural resource management have brought limited benefits to smallholder farmers, including crop farmers, fishers, livestock keepers and other resource users. Therefore, donors, policymakers and civil society organizations (CSOs), such as farmer organizations and nongovernmental organizations (NGOs), are urging the formal research sector to make its work more useful to smallholder farmers. Many institutions of agricultural research and development are now seeking ways to engage more closely with smallholders in order to conduct research that is more relevant for and accessible to them, and are seeking examples and good practices as sources of learning. Some examples of research that is focused on smallholders and in which the process is co-managed and driven by smallholders can be found in ?informal? research initiatives --specifically, those which are facilitated by CSOs. The purpose of this study was to identify such examples of informal agricultural research and development that could be documented and thus made accessible to formal researchers. This report also describes farmer-led research findings and their dissemination, and analyzes available evidence on the impact of farmer-led approaches to agricultural research and development on rural livelihoods, local capacity to innovate and adapt, and influence on governmental institutions of agricultural research and development.
