Book The Aliens Are Here

Download or read book The Aliens Are Here written by Fraser A. Sherman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2022-10-10 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aliens: They have taken the form of immigrants, invaders, lovers, heroes, cute creatures that want our candy or monsters that want our flesh. For more than a century, movies and television shows have speculated about the form and motives of alien life forms. Movies first dipped their toe into the genre in the 1940s with Superman cartoons and the big screen's first story of alien invasion (1945's The Purple Monster Strikes). More aliens landed in the 1950s science fiction movie boom, followed by more television appearances (The Invaders, My Favorite Martian) in the 1960s. Extraterrestrials have been on-screen mainstays ever since. This book examines various types of the on-screen alien visitor story, featuring a liberal array of alien types, designs and motives. Each chapter spotlights a specific film or TV series, offering comparative analyses and detailing the tropes, themes and cliches and how they have evolved over time. Highlighted subjects include Eternals, War of the Worlds, The X-Files, John Carpenter's The Thing and Attack of the 50-Foot Woman.

Book British Aliens in the United States During the War of 1812

Download or read book British Aliens in the United States During the War of 1812 written by and published by Baltimore : Genealogical Publishing Company. This book was released on 1979 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recording of ships' passenger lists was not required by law until 1819, and prior to that date only scattered lists of immigrants are thought to exist--until now, that is, for we have in this publication a record of thousands of British immigrants who arrived in the United States mainly between 1790 and 1812 and who had not yet been naturalized, and concerning whom few other records can be found. This is an altogether new and invaluable list of immigrants, founded upon a major record source few genealogists are aware of--the returns of aliens residing in the United States during the War of 1812. As of July 1812 British aliens in the United States were required to submit a report of "the persons composing their families, the places of their residence and their occupations or pursuits." These reports, or returns of the reports, upon which this work is based, normally give the name of the alien, aged fourteen or more, years of residence in the United States, number of persons in the family, place of residence, and occupation. In this compilation the aliens are listed in alphabetical order under their respective states, with accompanying data incorporated in the listing. In this manner as many as 12,000 or more aliens are identified, all of whom, for the reader's convenience, are again cited in the index.

Book The Nature of California

Download or read book The Nature of California written by Sarah D. Wald and published by University of Washington Press. This book was released on 2016-08-25 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The California farmlands have long served as a popular symbol of Americas natural abundance and endless opportunity. Yet, from John Steinbecks The Grapes of Wrath and Carlos Bulosans America Is in the Heart to Helena Maria Viramontess Under the Feet of Jesus, many novels, plays, movies, and songs have dramatized the brutality and hardships of working in the California fields. Little scholarship has focused on what these cultural productions tell us about who belongs in America, and in what ways they are allowed to belong. In The Nature of California, Sarah Wald analyzes this legacy and its consequences by examining the paradoxical representations of California farmers and farmworkers from the Dust Bowl migration to present-day movements for food justice and immigrant rights. Analyzing fiction, nonfiction, news coverage, activist literature, memoirs, and more, Wald gives us a new way of thinking through questions of national belonging by probing the relationships among race, labor, and landownership. Bringing together ecocriticism and critical race theory, she pays special attention to marginalized groups, examining how Japanese American journalists, Filipino workers, United Farm Workers members, and contemporary immigrants-rights activists, among others, pushed back against the standard narratives of landownership and citizenship.
