Book excerpt: Almanzo Wilder is almost nine years old, and is the youngest of four children. He's a farmer boy, living and working on his family's large farm in northern part of the state of New York. He goes to school in a one-room schoolhouse when school is in session, but when there's work to be done - and there almost always is on the Wilder farm - Almanzo does his part to help his family make a living. Each season has its own special chores on the farm. In the winter the Wilder family hauls wood and cuts ice from the river. Spring is the time for planting and tending to the crops. Summer is time for picking berries and fishing and a trip to town on Independence Day. Harvest time brings lots of hard work, but it also means a trip to the County Fair. Then it's time to prepare for winter all over again. Almanzo is old enough to feed and milk the cows and to help with the planting and harvesting. He even has a pair of young oxen he is teaching to obey commands; but he isn't old enough to care for the young horses. Although the temptation to go in by them and handle them is great, Almanzo obeys his father and leaves them alone. Throughout the year the Wilder family works hard, and Almanzo seems to eat as much as he works! As the older children leave for school and begin to think about their futures, Almanzo knows what kind of future he wants. He wants to be a farmer for the rest of his life, and dreams of the day he will have a colt of his own to train. Interactive CD-rom.

Book Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra

Download or read book Matrix Analysis and Applied Linear Algebra written by Carl D. Meyer and published by SIAM. This book was released on 2000-06-01 with total page 729 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book avoids the traditional definition-theorem-proof format; instead a fresh approach introduces a variety of problems and examples all in a clear and informal style. The in-depth focus on applications separates this book from others, and helps students to see how linear algebra can be applied to real-life situations. Some of the more contemporary topics of applied linear algebra are included here which are not normally found in undergraduate textbooks. Theoretical developments are always accompanied with detailed examples, and each section ends with a number of exercises from which students can gain further insight. Moreover, the inclusion of historical information provides personal insights into the mathematicians who developed this subject. The textbook contains numerous examples and exercises, historical notes, and comments on numerical performance and the possible pitfalls of algorithms. Solutions to all of the exercises are provided, as well as a CD-ROM containing a searchable copy of the textbook.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Wandering about on the ridge above his family's farm, Robert Peck comes across a neighbor's cow having difficulty giving birth. Acting quickly, Rob is able to help, and two bull calves are born. He is rewarded by their neighbor and owner of the cow, Mr. Tanner, with a piglet of his own to raise. Rob names the pig Pinky. Putting all his energy into caring for her, he dreams of the day she will become a brood sow and provide his family with a litter of pigs. Rob is the only surviving son in his family, and his four older sisters have all married and left home. Rob's father, Haven Peck, is a quiet, gentle man who butchers pigs, a job he does not enjoy but performs so he can provide for his family. Mr. Peck cannot read or write, but stresses the importance of education to his son. Although the family is not rich, Mr. Peck says they are rich in the things that truly matter: they have each other, they have land to work, and they have God's creation to enjoy. In the fall of the year, Rob's father becomes concerned when Pinky shows no signs of going into heat. After some unsuccessful attempts to breed her, Rob faces the prospect that his brood sow may be barren. Pinky's fate becomes more obvious when winter sets in. Food becomes scarce, and Rob knows what has to be done to provide for the family. "That's what being a man is all about, boy," his father tells him. "It's just doing what's got to be done." A Day No Pigs Would Die is the story of a tender relationship between a father and son - a boy in the process of becoming a man. Interactive CD-rom.

From the beginning, Matthew's heart is captured by this "kindred spirit" and he decides he wants to keep her. Marilla reluctantly agrees to this, but eventually finds herself absorbed by Anne's chatter, amused by the scrapes Anne gets herself into, and frustrated with Anne always having her head in the clouds. As Anne grows, Marilla finds her a "genius for getting into trouble." Yet, as Anne says, "have you ever noticed one encouraging thing about me, Marilla? I never make the same mistake twice." Despite her many predicaments, life at Green Gables is happy. Anne becomes wiser and steadier with age, making Marilla and Matthew proud of her many accomplishments. Only when tragedy strikes Green Gables does Marilla finally admit how much Anne is part of her life, and how very much she loves her. Interactive CD-rom.
