Book Biofuels from Agricultural Wastes and Byproducts

Download or read book Biofuels from Agricultural Wastes and Byproducts written by Hans P. Blaschek and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2010-06-15 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Traditional agriculture and emerging biofuels technology produce anumber of wastes and by-products, ranging from corn fiber andglycerin to animal manure, that have the potential to serve as thebasis for additional sources of bioenergy that includes both liquidbiofuels and biogas. Biofuels from Agricultural Wastes and Byproducts isthe first book to focus solely on the production of biofuelsprimarily from agricultural waste and by-products. The book isdivided roughly into two sections. The first section looks atliquid biofuel production from agricultural byproducts, densification of agricultural residues, and the delivery from farmto processing plant of waste and byproducts for use in biofuelproduction. The second section focuses on anaerobic digestion offood and animal wastes, microbial diversity, molecular andbiochemical aspects of methanogensis. Together these sections solidify Biofuels fromAgricultural Wastes and Byproducts as a definitive source ofinformation on the use of agricultural waste and by-products inbiofuel production.

Book Agricultural Waste Management

Download or read book Agricultural Waste Management written by Raymond Loehr and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 591 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Agricultural Waste Management: Problems, Processes, and Approaches is a summary of the processes and approaches applicable to the solution of agricultural waste management problems. This book is organized into three part encompassing 13 chapters that is intended as a bridge between theory and practice as well as between the many disciplines that are involved in agricultural waste management. The primary focus of agricultural waste management is on the obvious problems of odor control and feedlot runoff. The first part looks into the status of agricultural waste problem and the application of engineering and scientific fundamentals to the management of these wastes. This part also deals with the role of the land in waste management, and then outlines the guidelines for the development of feasible waste management systems. The second part describes the fundamentals, principles, and benefits of various waste management processes, including biological processes, ponds and lagoons, aerobic, anaerobic, physical, and chemical treatments, and nitrogen control; as well as treatment systems, such as ponds, lagoons, and land disposal. The third part examines the integration of the most economical and equitable combination of alternative technologies into feasible waste management approaches. This work will be of great value to agricultural producers and manufacturers, scientists, and engineers.

Book Processing and Use of Organic Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes

Download or read book Processing and Use of Organic Sludge and Liquid Agricultural Wastes written by P. L'Hermite and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Disposal of organic sludge and liquid agricultural wastes is a universal problem. Their production cannot be halted and as steps are taken to maintain or improve the quality of rivers and lakes it grows in quanti ty. The Commission's early awareness of the need for action to prepare for substantial growth in the Community's' sludge disposal problem led to the setting up of the COST 68 project to coordinate and guide European research and development work with particular emphasis on recycling sludge to agricultural land. Two years ago the field of research activi ties was extended to liquid agricultural wastes. This Symposium is the latest opportunity to provide a comprehensive review of the results of the project, to define current trends in practice and to establish by discussion the priorities for research over the next few years. The development of instrumentation and of analytical techniques during the period has extended our knowledge of the organic and inorganic constituents of sewage sludge and agricultural wastes and enabled us more readily to identify and measure the risks to which our general environment may be exposed when disposing of it. This evolution of understanding is a continuing process and an essential guide to the modification of disposal practices to achieve safer and more efficient operations. However, it is important to take a broad view of the application of research findings in the light of the considerable contrast in conditions in different parts of the world.

Book The Lean Farm

Download or read book The Lean Farm written by Ben Hartman and published by Chelsea Green Publishing. This book was released on 2015 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A practical, systems-based approach for a more sustainable farming operation To many people today, using the words "factory" and "farm" in the same sentence is nothing short of sacrilege. In many cases, though, the same sound business practices apply whether you are producing cars or carrots. Author Ben Hartman and other young farmers are increasingly finding that incorporating the best new ideas from business into their farming can drastically cut their wastes and increase their profits, making their farms more environmentally and economically sustainable. By explaining the lean system for identifying and eliminating waste and introducing efficiency in every aspect of the farm operation, The Lean Farm makes the case that small-scale farming can be an attractive career option for young people who are interested in growing food for their community. Working smarter, not harder, also prevents the kind of burnout that start-up farmers often encounter in the face of long, hard, backbreaking labor. Lean principles grew out of the Japanese automotive industry, but they are now being followed on progressive farms around the world. Using examples from his own family's one-acre community-supported farm in Indiana, Hartman clearly instructs other small farmers in how to incorporate lean practices in each step of their production chain, from starting a farm and harvesting crops to training employees and selling goods. While the intended audience for this book is small-scale farmers who are part of the growing local food movement, Hartman's prescriptions for high-value, low-cost production apply to farms and businesses of almost any size or scale that hope to harness the power of lean in their production processes.
