Book Farm Buildings Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Buildings Farm buildings in America have had their most rapid development in the years since 1910. With the exception Of that pertaining to the farmhouse, there is little literature to be found on the subject. The conditions surrounding the American farm have tended to hold back the development of good farm buildings. The early settlers in the timbered localities were primarily con cerned with wresting a livelihood from their cleared fields, and bringing more land under the plow. For their buildings they used the material nearest at hand and the log cabin and log barn became a part Of the agricultural history Of the country. The pioneer on the treeless prairie used the sod shanty, or the one-room board shack. The homesteaders were Often people with little ready money, and their buildings were only the barest Of shelters. Book The Book of Farm Buildings

Download or read book The Book of Farm Buildings written by Henry Stephens and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 718 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Book of Farm-Buildings: Their Arrangement and Construction The object of this work is twofold - one, to establish principles upon which the planning of farm-buildings should be based - the other, to concentrate correct and valuable information on the nature and use of the materials employed in constructing farm-buildings. It may astonish those of our readers who are agriculturists, to learn for the first time that principles should still be sought for in the planning of farm-steadings, after so long an experience of their use. The surprise would be greatly modified were they to take into consideration the care that should be bestowed in placing the numerous apartments of steadings relatively where they should be; and they would then discover that these are generally by no means so conveniently arranged as they might be. At any rate, it is clear that the same arrangement of apartments in a steading for a pastoral farm, where livestock alone are reared, would not be suitable for a strong clay land farm, where no stock are reared at all. We contrast these two extreme cases to make our meaning the clearer. But, however great a difference of arrangement is required in such extreme cases, a material difference also exists in cases even more alike. It will at once be admitted that a different arrangement should be made where stock are reared from where they are not; but even where stock are reared, it must also be conceded that considerable difference in the arrangement is required where the sorts of farming differ. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Buildings: With Plans and Descriptions In some parts of the country carpenters may be employed at two dollars per day, while in other sec tions they get seven. One farmer may have a good gravel pit on his farm so he can haul it to the building Site at odd times at little or no extra expense. Another farmer, wishing to put up the same kind of building in another county, would pay two dollars per yard for sand or aggregate at the car and haul it several miles. Prices of lumber and other building materials also vary in different parts of the country. Therefore any general estimate would prove misleading. Book Agricultural Drawing and the Design of Farm Structures Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agricultural Drawing and the Design of Farm Structures Classic Reprint written by Thomas E. French and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 148 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agricultural Drawing and the Design of Farm Structures As the title implies, this book is intended primarily for students in agriculture and agri cultural engineering. Engineering Drawing is a required subject in practically all college agricultural courses. It is not given in these courses with the idea of making professional draftsmen, but is regarded as an important subject for increasing the efficiency of the farm owner or manager, by giving him what is in reality a new language in which to express and record his ideas. Aside from mechanics and builders, there is no class to whom the value of technical draw ing should appeal with as much force as to the progressive farmer. His literature is full of illustrations and technical sketches, which to be read intelligently require a knowledge of technical drawing. Government bulletins, State bulletins, agricultural periodicals and books, even trade and machinery catalogues, cannot be fully understood without this knowl edge. In order to build properly, or to pass upon a set of plans, he should be able to read architectural drawings. The man with the ability to draw to scale can plan his buildings, take o his bill of materials, estimate the costs, and mentally see the finished structure before it is built. He can make sketches of broken parts of machinery, or of special pieces which he wishes to have made, he can make a layout 'of his buildings or a plat of his farm. In short, he has an asset of distinct advantage and value. This book is a text book* rather than a course in drawing. The principles and proc esses involved are described and illustrated, and a variety of problems of various kinds and of progressive difficulty have been arranged, with outlines for a considerable number of additional ones, not only giving suggestions to the farm owner, but also supplying class material, which may thus be varied from year to year. Drawing courses vary in length, and the instructor may make his choice from these numerous problems to cover the different divisions of the subject matter included in the text. Absorbents, like dry dust, land plaster, or South Carolina rock on the droppings, which should be frequently removed; and by keeping plenty of dry straw, swale hay, buckwheat hulls, etc., on the floor overhead and used for scratching litter on the floor of the pen. Secure shelter where possible by building in the lee of a windbreak or a hill, or of other farm buildings. Buildings that face the south will get the largest amount of exposure to the sun's rays; other things being equal, they will be warmer, drier, and more cheerful. Too much glass makes a house too Cold at night and too warm during the daytime, because glass gives off heat at night as readily as it collects it in the daytime. Much glass makes construction expensive. Allow one square foot of glass surface to about 16 square feet of floor space, if the Windows are properly placed. The windows should be high and placed up and down rather than horizontally and low. In the former the sunlight passes over the entire floor during the day, from east to west, drying and purifying practically the whole interior.
