Book Dairy Farm Growth and the Welfare Impacts of a Growth based Production Quota on Different Farm Size Groups

This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Low milk prices have led to divisive discussions of production controls as a potential solution among dairy farmers and industry groups. A growth-based production quota is one idea that has gained some support among farmers. The purpose of this thesis is to analyze the potential impacts of a growth-based production quota on different dairy farm size groups. To understand if small or large farms are growing faster, the relationship between a dairy farm's initial size and their growth rate is analyzed. I use county-level information on the number of dairy farms and milk cows from the USDA's Census of Agriculture. A statistically significant and positive relationship is found to exist between initial farm size and the growth rate in farm size over the past twenty years, which suggests that the larger a farm is, the faster they are growing their farm size and therefore milk production. Additional data from the USDA ARMS provides supporting evidence that larger dairy farms are growing at faster rates than smaller dairy farms in both 2000 and 2016. However, the difference in the growth rate was smaller in 2016 than in 2000. An equilibrium displacement model (EDM) is developed to estimate the impacts of a growth-based production quota. I consider scenarios where the production quotas range from requiring a 2 percent decrease in milk production to allowing for a 2 percent increase in milk production on each farm. Farms of all sizes are found to benefit in terms of producer welfare under all scenarios. Small farms benefit slightly more because they have smaller growth rates, but the difference between farm size groups is very small. Even when using very elastic estimates of the demand elasticity for fluid milk, all producer groups are found to benefit from the quota, though the benefit is much smaller. Under all the quota scenarios, the market price for fluid milk increases, therefore consumers are negatively impacted. Despite the benefits expected under the quota, some dairy farmers may still be opposed to a production control due to concerns over farm expansion potential, potential retaliatory trade actions by other countries, and potential consumer blowback due to higher market prices.

Book Farm management and extension needs in Central and Eastern European countries under the EU milk quota system

Download or read book Farm management and extension needs in Central and Eastern European countries under the EU milk quota system written by Abele Kuipers and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2023-08-28 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The introduction of a quota system has a large impact on the development of the agricultural sector, the agro-business and individual farms. In April 2004 the Central and Eastern European (CEE) Countries entering the EU had to implement a quota system for milk. It requires institution building, setting up administrative procedures, choices of the system, choice of priority groups, handling of butterfat reference, dealing with a national reserve, control aspects, quota transfer, farm management aspects and communication to farmers. All early attention at national levels has been given to the administrative aspects of milk quota systems. Communication to farmers about the system and the effects on farm management is often neglected. This publication hopes to fill this gap and wants to stimulate attention on farm management and extension efforts. It presents an overview of papers from ""old"" countries and country reports from new EU countries. They all contain information about expected structural changes due to the quota system, effects on farm management, extension needs in this area and challenges in years ahead. Impressions from 7 other CEE non EU countries are also included. This book gives an extensive and unique overview of the dairy situation in the Central and Eastern European countries in the year of the enlargement of the EU and a view into the future in this regard."

Book excerpt: According to the European legislation (Regulation EC No 853/2004), the food business operators collecting raw milk intended for the production of milk and dairy products must ensure compliance with certain health requirements for the animals. The animals must not show any symptoms of infectious diseases transmittable to humans, or signs of diseases of the udder or the genital tract that could contaminate milk. Furthermore, they must belong to a holding free or officially free of tuberculosis and brucellosis, and no unauthorized substances or authorized drugs must have been administered without respect to the withdrawal period. Dairy Farming: Operations Management, Animal Welfare and Milk Production presents a study with the goal of evaluating the compliance with the mentioned criteria in milk samples collected from 100 different dairy farms located in Central Italy. Additionally, under European milk quotas, dairy farms in Europe were limited in the amount of milk they could produce. While quotas were gradually increased over the past four decades, European milking quotas were completely abolished in April 2015 to help meet an expected 20% increase in the global consumption of milk and dairy products by 2050. With this, European dairy farmers can freely expand milk production based upon expected milk prices controlled by open market supply and demand. The authors present a review focused on milk production forecasting models and data variation from a past and future perspective. A comprehensive review of model applications and comparisons from studies over the past two decades is carried out, and both classical and modern methods are reviewed analysed. The concluding review focuses on scientific LCA studies conducted on a variety of different milk production systems, including the treatment of milk co-products, different allocation methods, the assessment of environmental impacts caused by fertilizers and agrochemicals in feed grain production and in the different stages of milk production. However, the methodology requires a higher degree of standardization, especially for the analysis of complex agricultural and livestock systems and their various forms and characteristics.

Book Production Rights in European Agriculture

Download or read book Production Rights in European Agriculture written by D. Barthelemy and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2001-05-21 with total page 268 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Rather than simply cataloging the various interpretations of European regulations by Member States, this international team examines the economic priorities, the legal bases, the social norms and cultural patterns which come into play, presenting an analytical approach to the study of production rights in European agriculture. This work traces the emergence and the economic and legal content of the different income support tools for agricultural producers, collectively termed 'production rights' and it looks at the foundations of the specific national conceptions underlying the methods of organising agricultural activity. The book is intended for a varied readership: farmers themselves, of course, but also economic, legal and tax consultants, experts, lawyers, notaries, as well as students, teachers and researchers. It has been set out in such a way as to allow readers to move freely from one subject to another, depending on whether their interest lies in economic aspects or legal developments, or whether they are more concerned by certain production rights or by certain features of their own organisation. The goal of the book is to enable the reader to grasp the special features and the significance of the forces which have shaped the current income support instruments for producers in the various Member States of the EU, and which will unquestionably continue to influence the measures which flow from reforms to the Common Agricultural Policy in the years to come.
