Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Farm Drainage in the United States: History, Status, and Prospects The most recent rapid developmental era for drainage reclamation drew to a close about 1965. Drainage is the most extensive soil and water manage ment activity in agriculture. Approximately 110 million acres of the land within farms are artificially drained in the United States. About 9 million acres, or 25 percent, of the irrigated cropland in the Western States are artificially drained. Drainage can also have adverse effects in some situations by reducing or degrading wetlands vital to wildlife and serving hydrologic functions such as flood flow regulation. Drainage activities can also affect the quality of water bodies receiving drainage water. Drainage investigations in usda began with the Reclamation Act of 1902. This act is best known as creating the Bureau of Reclamation in the Depart ment of the Interior. A drainage unit to service irrigation project planning was simultaneously authorized for usda. In 1962, Public Law 87-732, the Drainage Referral Act, was enacted which prohibited usda from assisting landowners in draining potholes and marshes in Minnesota and the Dakotas if wildlife would be materially harmed. Currently, usda technical and financial assistance is no longer provided as a matter of policy except in unique circumstances as part of a conservation system related to irrigation water control, or as an essential element of an environmental system of practices. Thus, for usda, this publication represents an end to the era of strong usda support and assistance for drainage development activities. Book The Economics and Management of Water and Drainage in Agriculture

Download or read book The Economics and Management of Water and Drainage in Agriculture written by Ariel Dinar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 930 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jan van Schilfgaarde, USDA Agricultural Research Service and National Research Council Committee on Irrigation-Induced Water Quality Problems In 1982, a startling discovery was made. Many waterbirds in Kesterson National Wildlife Refuge were dying or suffering reproductive failure. Located in the San Joaquin Valley (Valley) of California, the Kesterson Reservoir (Kesterson) was used to store agricultural drainage water and it was soon determined that the probable cause of the damage to wildlife was high concen trations of selenium, derived from the water and water organisms in the reservoir. This discovery drastically changed numerous aspects of water management in California, and especially affected irrigated agriculture. In fact, the repercussions spilled over to much of the Western United States. For a century, water development for irrigation has been a religiously pursued means for economic development of the West. The primary objective of the Reclamation Act of 1902 was, purportedly, the development ofirrigation water to support family farms which, in turn, would enhance the regional economy (Worster, 1985).

Book Practical Farm Drainage

Download or read book Practical Farm Drainage written by C. G. Elliott and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Farm Drainage: Why, When, and How to Tile Drain The following pages are presented to those who are interested in the subject of farm drainage. So short has been the time since the introduction of tile drainage in the prairie States, that farmers have scarcely taken time to acquire the requisite knowledge of the subject before they have begun actual operations. The drainage practice of the eastern States must be adapted to western soil and surroundings. This requires time and close observation. The object of these few pages is to give, in a concise and plain manner, that which the farmer should know, if he contemplates draining his farm. It is not the intention of the author to say all there is to be said upon the subject, but to say enough to give the farmer an elementary knowledge of why, when, where and how to drain his farm. The practical methods described in these pages have been well tested, and are now in constant use by practical men. It is hoped that the language is sufficiently clear to be understood by all.
