Book The River Batteries at Fort Donelson

Download or read book The River Batteries at Fort Donelson written by M. Todd Cathey and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2021-09-28 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unprepared for invasion, Tennessee joined the Confederacy in June 1861. The state's long border and three major rivers with northern access made defense difficult. Cutting through critical manufacturing centers, the Cumberland River led directly to the capital city of Nashville. To thwart Federal attack, engineers hastily constructed river batteries as part of the defenses that would come to be known as Fort Donelson, downstream near the town of Dover. Ulysses S. Grant began moving up the rivers in early 1862. In last-minute desperation, two companies of volunteer infantry and a company of light artillerymen were deployed to the hastily constructed batteries. On February 14, they slugged it out with four City-class ironclads and two timber-clads, driving off the gunboats with heavy casualties, while only losing one man. This book details the construction, armament, and battle for the Fort Donelson river batteries.

Book The Tennessee Mountain Man

Download or read book The Tennessee Mountain Man written by George Moon and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2013-04-24 with total page 719 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: My writing style is like a wheel. I begin with the hub then branch out into other tales; however, before it all ends, I bring it back so that it all makes sense. Im able to describe a murder as well as sex without resorting to explicit detail like so much found in todays fiction. By the proper use of language, I accomplish the same emotional response from my readers. The reader often finds interesting essays that digress from or adds to the main plot. They might include slices of local history or an explanation why certain things appear as they do. My stories are told with the reader in mind. The plots are fast moving and contain enough surprises to hold the readers attention. The Tennessee Mountain Man is my third book. It takes a popular character from the first bio novel, Renos Funmakers, and gives his exploits after five years of marriage. The year is 1861, and the trouble down at Fort Sumter, in South Carolina, not only changes the United States but Jack Leffingwell and his family. Along with the main plot, my books never fail to offer the reader information that was previously unknown, making it a learning experience.

Book The 250Th Field Artillery Men Remember World War Ii

Download or read book The 250Th Field Artillery Men Remember World War Ii written by RUBY GWIN and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-13 with total page 273 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The war memories for each were not easy to tell or write, for some had repressed them long ago. We have been able to live the American Dream through dedicated soldiers as the 250th Field Artillerymen. They spent many nights together away from home with ties that would bind them together that has never loosened over the years. Their stories are inspiring ones of faith, courage, patriotism and some told with humor, which helped to put their experience into perspective - somewhat! During this time, our people here at home were doing their part in everyway they could. Everyone listened to the radio for further news. The good news finally came - from "Day of Infamy" to "VE-VJ Day!" As a light weight 105mm howitzer battalion they would become known for their firing power. They made history and are leaving a legacy to be most proud. They proved they still can answer to the call of duty. I am proud to say, never once did I not enjoy my work with each of these men. Let's just say - we have a deeper friendship than when we began this project together. I became their ears and wrote the word for many of them. I scribbled making notes as they talked and then, when hunched over my keyboard to translate from them working into the early morning hours. I pray I conveyed each story as each of them would have. As I wrote, I got the sense what the American flag meant to each - it symbolized a Tradition of Caring. I wrote with a lump in my throat and a tear in my eyes and, yes, a little snicker.

Book excerpt: From the New York Times bestselling author of The Legion of the Damned® Novels and The Mutant Files comes the first novel in a post-apocalyptic military science fiction series about America rising from the ashes of a global catastrophe... On May Day, 2018, sixty meteors entered Earth’s atmosphere and exploded around the globe with a force greater than a nuclear blast. Earthquakes and tsunamis followed. Then China attacked Europe, Asia, and the United States in the belief the disaster was an act of war. Washington D.C. was a casualty of the meteor onslaught that decimated the nation’s leadership and left the surviving elements of the armed forces to try and restore order as American society fell apart. As refugees across America band together and engage in open warfare with the military over scarce resources, a select group of individuals representing the surviving corporate structure makes a power play to rebuild the country in a free market image as The New Confederacy...
