Book Animal Welfare in Animal Agriculture

Download or read book Animal Welfare in Animal Agriculture written by Wilson G. Pond and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-23 with total page 1140 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: What constitutes animal welfare? With animals being used for companionship, service, research, food, fiber, and by-products, animal welfare is a topic of great interest and importance to society. As the world’s population continues to increase, a major challenge for society is the maintenance of a strong and viable food system, which is linked to the well-being and comfort of food animals. Animal Welfare in Animal Agriculture: Husbandry, Stewardship, and Sustainability in Animal Production explores the pressing issue of farm animal welfare in animal production systems in the United States and globally. A framework for open discussion on animal welfare, this multidisciplinary book brings together the perspectives of 40 highly qualified and recognized experts in their respective fields. Fourteen chapters address a range of topics that includes ethics, sociology, food safety, ecology, feed resources, biotechnology, government regulations, and sustainability, as well as animal comfort, health, and contributions to society. The book also offers a historical perspective on the growth of animal agriculture from family farms to industrial animal agriculture—and the impact this has had on society. Illustrating the diversity of viewpoints, the concept of animal welfare is defined from the perspectives of an ethicist and philosopher, a research scientist, a veterinarian, an industrialist, and an activist, as well as from the perspective of sustainability and product quality. Written primarily for students, but also highly relevant for professionals in varying fields of academia and industry, this timely book reveals important insights into animal welfare and animal agriculture. Unique in its depth, breadth, and balance, it underscores the need for dialogue on wide-ranging and often contentious issues related to animal production systems.

Book The Business of Farm Animal Welfare

Download or read book The Business of Farm Animal Welfare written by Nicky Amos and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-08-18 with total page 270 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Globally, nearly 70 billion animals are farmed annually for meat, milk and eggs. Two-thirds of these are farmed intensively. The views held by food companies on animal stewardship, and the management practices and processes that they adopt are, therefore, of critical importance in determining the welfare of these animals. Yet, despite the scale of the food industry’s impact, farm animal welfare remains a relatively immature management issue. There is a lack of consensus around the specific responsibilities companies have for farm animal welfare, and around how companies should treat the animals in their or in their suppliers’ care. This book, The Business of Farm Animal Welfare, provides an extensive, authoritative analysis of current corporate practice on farm animal welfare. It critically reviews and assesses the ethical and business case for action. Through a series of practitioner case-studies, it describes how companies have addressed farm animal welfare in their operations and supply chains. It analyses the key barriers to companies adopting higher standards of farm animal welfare, and offers a series of practical recommendations to companies, consumers and policy makers on the role that they might play in raising farm animal welfare standards across the food industry. As the first comprehensive account of business and farm animal welfare, this book is an essential resource for researchers, practitioners and general readers looking to understand and influence corporate practice on farm animal welfare.

Book Improving farm animal welfare

Download or read book Improving farm animal welfare written by H.J. Blokhuis and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-05-31 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How do you define the quality of life of a farmed animal? This timely book addresses the complex and often controversial issues surrounding the assessment and improvement of farm animal welfare. Based on a large, multi-disciplinary EU funded research project called Welfare Quality, it discusses the relevance of science based welfare assessments and the importance of establishing a fruitful dialogue between science and society. An outline is given of the development of a workable welfare assessment system for cattle, pigs and chickens as well as practical ways of improving the animals' quality of life. This book synthesises the huge body of work carried out by the largest ever international network of scientists and stakeholders in Welfare Quality. It describes some of the obstacles encountered and their solution and why particular paths were chosen. It also clearly sets out what still needs to be done and presents selected strategies and technologies (automation, proxy indicators, targeting of risk factors, etc.) designed to ensure the continued improvement of welfare and its assessment. The book provides a valuable source of knowledge on farm animal welfare for social and animal scientists, students, teachers, policy makers, lobby groups and the animal industry.

Book Farm Animal Welfare Consumer Willingness to Pay and Trust

Download or read book Farm Animal Welfare Consumer Willingness to Pay and Trust written by Giuseppe Nocella and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Higher animal welfare standards increase costs along the supply chain of certified animal-friendly products (AFP). Since the market outcome of certified AFP depends on consumer confidence toward supply chain operators complying with these standards, the role of trust in consumer willingness-to-pay (WTP) for AFP is paramount. Results from a contingent valuation survey administered in five European Union countries show that WTP estimates were sensitive to robust measures of consumer trust for certified AFP. Deriving the WTP effect of a single food category on total food expenditure is difficult for survey respondents; hence, a budget approach was employed to facilitate this process.

After an introduction of the legal and material aspects of animal welfare, the following topics were dealt with : - Significance of indicators relevant to animal welfare - Integrated systems of indicators relevant to animal welfare - Applicability of indicators in animal welfare research and control procedures. The concluding discussion focussed on the applicability of indicators in science and in practice. As a result of the seminar, the presently known indicators can be grouped into the following categories : - indicators already being applied to animal welfare assessment in prac tice, such as morbidity and mortality, technopathies, behavioural aberrations and production performances; - indicators of high sensitivity, such as physiological criteria, which as yet are too demanding for general application; - indicators still under investigation for their reliability. It became also evident that the continuous integration of indicators into canprehensive assessment systems promises an ever improving judgement of animal welfare problems. The proceedings will be of substantial value to the CEC in the pursuit of animal welfare problems

Book Farm animal Welfare in the United States

Download or read book Farm animal Welfare in the United States written by Kristin Showmaker Papp and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farm-animal welfare in intensive animal production is a topic that is gaining momentum with consumer-citizens and other stakeholders. Much literature is dedicated to the influence of consumer demand for higher-welfare products and citizen support for higher-welfare legislation. Demand for products is influenced by consumer values while consumer-citizen attitudes toward welfare drives support for legislation. To complicate matters, consumer-citizen attitudes may or may not agree with stakeholders, including producers and animal scientists, who hold disparate sets of welfare standards that range from the physiological to the needs-based spectrum of welfare. The United States favors an economic, market-regulation approach to all levels of farm-animal welfare including the minimum standards and higher-welfare attributes, relying on consumer values expressed as market demand and attitudes expressed as pressure for legislation. Understanding the differences between the values driving demand, attitudes supporting legislation, and the role of transparent information is key to achieving higher welfare standards at both economic and legislative levels. A knowledge gap exists within literature of the nature of the United States economic stance on welfare, existing policies and the political landscape that illuminates the challenges of diverse consumer values and attitudes shaping these animal welfare drivers. This paper uses a traditional literature review to identify shaping these animal welfare drivers. This paper uses a traditional literature review to identify knowledge gaps in qualitative literature to gain a thorough understanding of the role of the economic value and moral values of animal welfare among all stakeholders within the legal and economic landscape and how to assist stakeholders to make more informed decisions or inspire further research.

Book Farm Animal Welfare

Download or read book Farm Animal Welfare written by David Sainsbury and published by HarperOne. This book was released on 1986 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The animal welfare field is currently a battleground between two extreme viewpoints. On the one side are the extreme `welfarists′ who advocate a natural habitat for the raising of livestock, and on the other are the `intensivists′, whose only concern in raising stock would appear to be the production results they achieve. A middle course is possible and the aim of this book is to consider the welfare of farm animals as a whole in the light of current knowledge. There is no perfect system for raising each different type of farm animal, but this book does provide practical information and demonstrates acceptable systems of management do exist which are economic, humane and provide satisfactory returns on investment. The book is of interest to agricultural and veterinary students, agricultural advisors and to those interested in this aspect of livestock management generally
