Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "David Abulafia's new book guides readers along the world's greatest bodies of water to reveal their primary role in human history. The main protagonists are the three major oceans-the Atlantic, the Pacific, and the Indian-which together comprise the majority of the earth's water and cover over half of its surface. Over time, as passage through them gradually extended and expanded, linking first islands and then continents, maritime networks developed, evolving from local exploration to lines of regional communication and commerce and eventually to major arteries. These waterways carried goods, plants, livestock, and of course people-free and enslaved-across vast expanses, transforming and ultimately linking irrevocably the economies and cultures of Africa, Europe, Asia, and the Americas"--

Book excerpt: The Loch Sloy was built for Aitken, Lilburn & Co of Glasgow. She sailed between Britain and Australia for more than twenty years. In that time she established a reputation as a crack wool clipper. Windjammer, the story of the clipper ship Loch Sloy is not an adventure nor is it a romance or a tragedy, even though it contains elements of all three. The ship, her captains, officers, crew and passengers, all those her sailed upon her call out from the past to have their stories told. The Loch Sloy's' keel was laid down in mid-1877. By August the construction of the hull and deck fittings had been completed. After her first marine survey, the masts were stepped in, and by the end of October the Loch Sloy was all but complete. The clipper lasted twenty one years before coming to grief on the jagged shore of Kangaroo Island during the predawn hours of April 24th 1899. The final chapter of the Loch Sloy like her unfortunate passengers and crew was buried beneath the ever shifting sands of Maupertuis Bay.

Download or read book The Gate of Farewell written by H. Bedford-Jones and published by Fiction Hunter Press. This book was released on 2020-06-23 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “I have an older brother, or I had, five years ago. He was in business in New York, importing curios and art objects for rich collectors. Five years ago he got on the track of something big, though he never told a soul what it was, out in Africa somewhere, and went out himself to see about it. He never came back, though some of his papers did, with a report that he had died near Aden of fever. Naturally, I accepted this report as correct until last week.” Allan Tredgar took a ring from his finger and held it out, the hatchet-lines of his face suddenly accentuated, his strong teeth flashing in what was very like a snarl. “Last week, a man came into the office to see me about a shipment of dates. He was wearing this ring, one that I had given Bob years ago—a seal, with no chance for a mistake. Well, this chap had bought the ring from an Arab trading-dhow master at Port Said a year before.” So Allan Tredgar hired out a yacht for a cruise past Port Said in search of his brother, stopping at Solomon’s Temple for supplies and information. The proprietor, a pudgy little Cockney named John Solomon, warns Tredgar not to continue his quest, but Allan is determined to know the truth. Stalked by the mysterious Colonel Lionel Parrish, and running afoul of the Senussiyeh, a radical Moslem secret society, Tredgar leads his crew through one misadventure after another, leading up to a climactic showdown between good and evil! The Gate of Farewell is the first volume of master pulp writer, H. Bedford-Jones’ John Solomon series, which would go on to span eleven novels and numerous short stories from the 1910’s into the 1930’s.
