Book FAREWELL TO N DJAMENA

Download or read book FAREWELL TO N DJAMENA written by Isaac Benjamin and published by Author House. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 551 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Farewell to N'Djamena is a literally classic that carries out a narrative on the United Nation Mission in the Central Africa Republic and Chad (MINURCAT). The book examines the withdrawal of the European Force which gave way to MINURCAT Force activities in the region. Unfortunately one year later, the force was considered not to have attained its Humanitarian Mandate especially as the Presidential election was by the corner. Chad had made peace with the then old Sudan whose President had the ICJ hammer dangling on his neck for war crimes. All effort to get President Idriss Derby of Chad to extend MINURCAT Mandate proved abortive. Subsequently the mission began to wind up gradually. The author is of the view that the numerous political challenges and conflicts in African is caused by the greed of its leaders who have turned the institutions of governance to that of personal gains. Finally, the book will assist the United Nation Secretary General to know the challenges that faced MINURCAT which led to the resignation of the Special Representative of the Secretary General. It is a must read piece.

Book Ordinary Violence and Social Change in Africa

Download or read book Ordinary Violence and Social Change in Africa written by and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-06-05 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ordinary social violence, - i.e. recurrent mental or physical aggression occurring between closely related people - structures social relationships in Africa, and in the world. Studies of violence in Africa often refer to ethnic wars and explicit conflicts and do not enter the hidden domain of violence that this book reveals through in-depth anthropological studies from different parts and contexts in Africa. Ordinary violence has its distinctive forms embedded in specific histories and cultures. It is gendered, implicates witchcraft accusations, varies in rural and urban contexts, relates to demographic and socio-economic changes of the past decades and is embedded in the everyday life of many African citizens. The experience of ordinary violence goes beyond the simple notion of victimhood; instead it structures social life and should therefore be a compelling part of the study of social change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Visual literacy is an increasingly critical skill in a globalizing, digital world. This book addresses the core issues concerning visual literacy in education, underscoring its importance for the instruction of students and educators. Professor Billie Eilam argues that the incorporation of visual skill development in teacher training programs will help break the cycle of visual illiteracy. Understanding the pedagogical benefits and risks of visual representation can help educators develop effective strategies to produce visually literate students. Eilam presents a broad overview of theoretical knowledge regarding visual representation, as well as a discussion of best practices for the use of visual elements in schools. In addition to theory, Eilam includes practical exercises for introducing visual literacy into teacher education, offering strategies for analyzing visualization in curricula and for increasing awareness of visual culture.

Download or read book Appel written by Joel Adam Struthers and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2019-03-29 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Appel: A Canadian in the French Foreign Legion is the first-hand account of the author’s six years as a professional soldier during the 1990s, and his experience in the Legion's elite Groupe des Commandos Parachutistes (GCP). Joel Struthers recounts the dangers and demands of military life, from the rigours of recruitment and operational training in the rugged mountains of France, to face-to-face combat in the grasslands of some of Africa’s most troubled nations. Told through the eyes of a soldier, and interspersed with humorous anecdotes, Appel is a fascinating story that debunks myths about the French Foreign Legion and shows it more accurately as a professional arm of the French military. Struthers provides insight into the rigorous discipline that the Legion instills in its young recruits, – who trade their identities as individuals for a life of adventure and a role in a unified fighting force whose motto is “Honour and Loyalty.” Foreword by Col. Benoit Desmeulles, former commanding officer of the Legions 2e Régiment Étranger Parachutistes.

Book A Teenager in the Chad Civil War

Download or read book A Teenager in the Chad Civil War written by Ésaïe Toïngar and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2006-02-23 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent years have found much of Africa to be a land of turmoil and revolution. Distress in the Sudan and countries such as Rwanda, Ivory Coast, Sierra Leone and Liberia have made Africa the site of a variety of atrocities from displacement to torture to genocide. The country of Chad, which theoretically gained its independence from France in 1960, is one of many that have been fighting a series of particularly brutal wars, internal and external. In 1982, Hissene Habre wrested power from Chad's UN-recognized government, igniting a vicious civil war. Thousands of innocent citizens were kidnapped, tortured and killed to quash political unrest. Covering 1982 to 1986, this memoir tells the story of Esaie Toingar, a native of southern Chad and miraculous survivor of Chad's darkest days, many of which came during different Septembers. This work contains Toingar's first-hand description of growing up, coming of age and waging the ultimate struggle for survival in the war-torn country. It gives a graphic account of what transpired in Chad during the rule of Habre and the ways in which the author managed to survive, fleeing his home village and seeking safety among the CODOs, a rebel movement of the south. Derived primarily from Toingar's memories, this work also utilizes information garnered from other first-hand testimonials and a 1991 documentary filmed by post-Habre Chad Television. Photographs from the author's collection are included.
