Book Memento Mori Classifying Nineteenth Century Ontario Gravestones

Download or read book Memento Mori Classifying Nineteenth Century Ontario Gravestones written by Laura Suchan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2012-08-22 with total page 86 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ontario gravestone iconography exhibits a remarkable progression of artistic, cultural and religious expression throughout the nineteenth century. Unfortunately the study of gravestone motifs has been largely ignored by those transcribing data in Ontario's early cemeteries. It is imperative this information, along with motifs, be recorded before it is lost to us. Gravestone iconography can be organized into simple stylistic categories which would allow for a standardized approach when recording gravestone information. Much of Ontario's gravestone research is done by local genealogical and historical societies working in isolation. Sharing gravestone data using a common classification system would aid in developing perspectives into topics such as carving traditions, economic status and gravestone choice across local and regional lines. This information would shed light on the entire gravestone industry and provide researchers with the background necessary to study motifs more closely.

Book excerpt: Until now the story of this trail, its beginnings, its purpose, and its significant place in Ontario’s history, has been poorly defined. The story of Scugog Carrying Place, the ancient aboriginal trails connecting Lake Ontario with Lakes Scugog and Simcoe and the Kawartha lakes is a multifaceted one. In tracing its documented history from the 1790s to the 1850s, author Grant Karcich unravels mysteries; explores the lifestyles of early First Nations; provides background on local archaeological sites; and introduces the intrepid early surveyors, fur traders, missionaries, colourful characters, and entrepreneurial immigrant settlers from both the newly formed United States and the United Kingdom. In their wake come the demon whiskey, devastating plagues, competing world views, saddlebag preachers, and ultimately the marginalization of the First Nations people. The Scugog Trail assumes a significant role in the transition of the land, from forest to agriculture to villages, towns, and industrial centres. Long-forgotten cabins, cemeteries, and a cartographic mystery involving the infamous Cabane de Plomb add to the mystique. The trail bore witness to the development of communities, such as Oshawa, Harmony, Columbus, Prince Albert, Port Perry, Seagrave, Cannington, and Beaverton, whose stories also unfold. Scugog Carrying Place is a must read for history buffs, genealogists, archaeologists, and anyone with roots in this part of Ontario.

Pat Jalland has examined the correspondence, diaries, and death memorials of fifty-five families to show us deathbed scenes of the time, good and bad deaths, the roles of medicine and religion, children's deaths, funerals and cremations, widowhood, and mourning rituals.
